Default Why are Legacy GT's so cheap?

I always loved unique cars, so i bought a saab 92x. I always loved turbo cars, so I want a Legacy GT (2005-2006).

They sell for $9000 to $12,000 with only ~110,000km on the odometer....
If it runs the same motor as the impreza STi (which same year and same KM sells for ~$23,000) So there has to be a gimmick?

Legacy owners, any problems i should be weary of?

This would be a daily driver, so reliability is a KEY ISSUE. ~650km a week. I don't mind spending a bit more on gas + premium.

Any issues? There is very few for sale (3 of them to be exact) for what I want/afford, and those prices seem to good to be true (my buddy paid $9,999 for a 100,000km 2.5rs).

Is the 5 speed the same in my 92x (2.5i impreza)? I would be weary of the glass gear... especially if I ever tune the car.

i personally don't think 12k is that cheap for a car with that many miles on it that's roughly 70k miles subaru's have very good reliability and they dont have sti motors they have wrx motors which are the same block as an sti but with different intake manifold, intercooler and it has avcs on intake and exhaust instead of just exhaust,it also has way better suspension than the LGT the sti is much faster than any stock LGT and built way more for modding and racing and im sure there are more features between the two that are different also i think the LGT's have a 6 speed not for sure on that though. as far as the tranny's on these cars they are beefy as hell as long as you aren't launching it, start launching it and it will burn out fast or possibly break...transfer cases aren't cheap to replace...lol.

There are a lot of incorrect statements in this wall of text.

Your buddy paid way too much for his 2.5RS.

Somewhere in that giant unformatted wall of words he did mention that the LGT is not the same drivetrain as the STI, but rather the same as the 08 WRX (EJ255 and 5MT).

Try legacygt.com for more information.

I went on there and I learned it has catastrophic turbo failures. After reading everything I would replace the turbo with a 08 wrx Turbo, need a tune, and get a special ams oil filteration setup...

Prices are really strange in Ontario. Demand drives them up like crazy
I totally agree my buddy paid way to much. Salvaged/rebuilt and very high mileage WRX starts at $10,000. Old GC 2.5rs with STI swaps all are asking for $10,000 and a clean stock GC is still over $6000.

Subarus are only the tip of the iceberg, old ****ty s14 rust buckets go for $7000. Demand drives the price much higher than it should be. Remember in Canada msrp is ~$7000 more for some Subarus and we get taxed more too.

The catasprophic turbo and engine failures I believe are due to small screens in the banjo bolts found in the oil lines. If you remove them, they should be pretty reliable. There do appear to be tons of grenaded engines on LGT.com. I was going to buy one a couple of years ago, but just didn't seem worth it. Even then some were around $10k. I'm considering a Tribeca now. Terrible gas mileage and not really that roomy, but reliable and decent for a family.

yup, screens in the oil lines, they blow apart and get sucked into the turbo. I'm looking for an LGT in a few months. That's the only (big/common) issue I'm aware of.

First mod= vf52 and new oil lines, bolts right up and you can get nice used ones off here from 08+ wrx's.

I also believe the VF52 went on the 09+WRX which is what pissed all the 08' WRX guys off, right?

Because they aren't ricer taxed like the wrx's, STI's and even moreso the 2.5RS's. They basically depreciate like a normal, average mid-size sedan.

Wrx has a 2.0L the gt has the 2.5 like the sti but thats all they have in common. Car insurance is really cheap too compared to the sti or even the wrx

Biggest difference is what's behind the engine. LGT doesn't get the trans, diffs, hubs, brakes. (Although the Spec-b comes with a non-dccd 6-speed).

In 06, the WRX went 2.5L as well. Exact same EJ255 engine. The STi's engine (EJ257 - note the similarity in Engine code, the numbers aren't random) is nearly the same thing, with a different head design, pistons, and a few other tweaks, IIRC. The STi sets itself apart with the far superior drivetrain behind the engine, as another said, as well as a bigger turbo. Seriously, where are all these people coming from???

When I was shopping back in 08 I had 2 dealers (not Subie Dealers) try to sell me LGTs with burnt up turbos... I've got ~70K on the clock, Banjo Bolts are still in there... Oil changed every 2500-3000 miles.

im pretty sure 05-06 ej255 in the legacys are exact same as the ej257 (sti) block, exact same pistons and exact same heads cams and everything else on the long block. difference is in the manifold turbo and intercooler. 06+ ej255 have different piston dish size and some head differences but they are pretty much the same as sti engine. the 5spd legacy tranny is stronger than the old wrx trannys and have longer gears. they have same problems that other ej25s have. ringland cracking. preturbo cats breaking apart. they also have unique problems like the intercooler spliting apart. very ****ty design. and the turbo banjo bolt filter. i checked mine at 97k and it had barely anything in it. i love my legacy. id take it over a wrx anyday. well maybe not a brand new 11+ wrx cause those r sweet haha
