^I understand it's a frowned upon post processing thing, but I'd like to at least learn it.

Shot with Canon T2i, 70-200 f/4 L, CP filter, Lightroom 4. Went in a little different direction with the first three. Obviously it was snowing so I tried to get a little creative.

It is absolutely a great tool, when used correctly. It shouldn't look over done or baked. It should look natural, fooling the eye into believing the foreground and background are naturally receiving the same lighting.

No. It isn't over done too much, but I remember the pic, I know what was used to take it, and that by definition isn't HDR.

HDR is not a post processing edit. It can and should be post processed, as any digital photography is these days, but HDR 'look' done in pp ISN'T HDR.

I admit, not the most reputable source, but this does give a great example of HDR and how/why it is used and useful.

Looking to possibly get a rig setup. I currently only have Lightroom to edit pictures with. Is photoshop needed?

Yeah you should get it. Lightroom doesn't have the cloning capabilities that Photoshop has (content aware). It will make your life easier.

If you want to do rig shots, YES photoshop is need. Lightroom is a great and powerful tool but there are somethings it can't do. Even though lightroom has a cloning tool it isn't as precise as what photoshop has.
