Default Cygnus Performance - X1 Coilover Review

Yet another Cygnus Review!

A small segway prior into digging into the review regarding Geoff and his X1 Coilovers. Prior to entering the Subaru world I've had experience in the Honda world running Koni Yellow GCs with Eibach coilover springs in a DC4 and a 99 Civic coupe with Bilstein B8s & H&R race springs. Both in my opinion road GREAT. Incredibly comfortable and took a beating. Lots of street and canyon runs -- no real track experience with those set-ups.

With the great experience my brother and I talked and schemed to build Koni Race damper based coilovers built around Raceland coilover bodies, provided by one of my good friends.

The Raceland coilover front bodies had to be extended as the Koni 1436 RACE damper was a bit longer than the C/O body, the 1437 RACE damper fit like a charm. We used some DOM round steel and had it welded, used a strut screw cap from an MR2.

Swift 9k/7K with Hyperco CS100 4" Helper Springs Fronts and NO helper in the REAR.

The suspension road pretty well but it was a bit difficult to dial in. A little preface, the roads where I live SUCKKK, pot holes galore and a ton of deviation for the daily commute. Eventually I hit a pothole and my Koni strut and it wouldn't adjust (I haven't tried to adjust it in a while. Maybe I can now? hah!)

Anyways, long story short, I was going down the KW, Bilstein, or Ohlins route. I ended up finding Cygnus Performance and reached out. I gave him the same story I lay here before us and Geoff was EXTREMELY HELPFUL. He provided me a full break down, called me a few times to try and understand what I wanted in the build and then what he had to offer. This went on for about 2 months.... Long story short I got 3 other friends to order coilovers with me, just based off the fantastic reviews and FANTASTIC customer support Geoff provides to the automotive community.

Out with the old-ish in the with the NEW!

I installed the X-1 coilovers 5/15/21 and I've put down just under 10k miles on the coilovers so far. They've seen desert, some snow and still looks pretty clean, no signs of rust wear.

The ride is SMOOOTH - X1 Classic Setup 7k/6k. No suspension knocking or noise, and handles most of the roads very well with some dialing in. You wouldn't think that singular value changes in dampening would be noticeable but it truly does make a difference. My values sits around 5 in the front and 7 in the rear. It's not like my previous setups, it is a little bit firmer but still very compliant at the same time. Daily drivable with ease. The wifeys butt dyno prefers the X1 over the Koni set-up and loves to drive the GD to work when I'm not taking it to work myself.

I hope this helps anyone else on the fence deciding on the X1 coilovers. Geoff is a treasure to our community.

To add a bit more detail: My brother had Koni Sports in his MR2 and off the bat he says the X1 performs and rides way better.

My buddy who has a GD Sedan had Teins and says the X1 rides far better than Tein out the box....

I'll second Geoffs ability to put together a real nice coilover. I have the exact same setup as you and was blown away at the ride quality, its really smooth over every surface really. I have had mine on for 3500 miles or so, almost a full year. It looks like you went with the Hyper CO springs but I can't 100% tell. I'm happy to hear another person has gotten to experience his coilovers. I couldn't find anyone where I live to check a set out in person. If you're on the fence about Geoffs quality or product have no fear and invest in them. He's a really easy guy to deal with as well.
