I know what you mean, when the specs came out, it was as if they tried to piss off people.

Although I am sure there is some marketing that proves they made the right decision.

Why does Subaru offer a CVT or 5-speed or CVT on the base XV Crosstrek, but a CVT only on the premium trim.

Why does Subaru offer an automatic or 5-speed on the base Forester, but only an automatic on the XT turbo...

Why does VW offer the same thing on the Tiguan.

Ford has denied manual gearboxes on top trim lines and larger engine choices for a long time, aside from Mustang.

this is par for the course. Somehow, the industry has decided that most people who want a manual gearbox, don't want any other options with it.

Am I naiive for thinking the American car market is larger than the European market, or the Japanese market? I have never understood why people shopping for cars in those markets get more options than we do here. They apparently run the numbers and its like "Oh, well, only around 1% of the people looking for an AWD car / hatchback / etc would want AWD plus 6-speed / a sporty diesel / this high-end performance tuned version we have....so let's not invest the money in putting that model in the USDM." When that 1% is probably larger than some of the countries they sell to in the EDM.

They have "type" certifications.

A vehicle is certified by those regulating authorities, and then variants of that model are grand-fathered in, or ammended to the certification.

A car with 5 different trim models, including 3 or 4 different engine choices... the model is type-certified, and then the differences are ammended to the main certification.

US Federalizing... Each of those various engines has to be almost fully federalized in and of itself, as if it were a completely independent model. Having lots of variants raises the costs of federalization dramatically.

So the models we do get have fewer niche configurations, fewer distinct choices, and all tend to be re-treads of the same mass-market appliances that the companies know will sell, and recoup all the federalization costs, in addition to the production costs.

And many of the EU countries, if it meeds German TUV, or British MOT, or even the Japanese or Australian equivalents, will grandfather that in to be acceptable in their countries also. There is no cross-compatibility with US-federalization, coming into the US, even though most of the criteria for certification in most cases of the developed automotive market countries are reasonably equivalent, and probably could be negotiated to be cross-compatible, and thus much less expensive for auto makers, and thus automobile buyers.

Less expensive would cut costs, and allow manufacturers to make profits on smaller numbers of units sold, and niche models, such as performance models, would be easier to justify adding to the lineup.

So the production model has been released. Apparently it's going to be on the lots this spring and available in white, silver, and black.

I may buy one to replace the RSX and the FJ at the same time as long as it isn't horribly expensive, which given the price of the SL AWD I bet it will be. i'm guessing just south of $30k.

I just looked at this on the Nissan website and I have to say, it looks kind of interesting. Might be a small, fun to drive vehicle, with a little pep, four doors, some utility, and a modification friendly turbo engine. The pictures on the website show a manual trans, so we will have to see how much they are going to ask for this little guy when it is released in this Spring.

wonder why Nissan & Subaru went with CVT tranny in there vehicles. I kind of understand Subaru since they had then in the 80's, but it seems like everyone else are going with DCT

Simplicity, and fuel mileage. The worst thing for mileage is change in RPM.

Yes, the people who want manuals and can live without AWD.

The rest buy the AWD that comes standard with the CVT. FYI Nissan aimed this vehicle at the young male audience and still offered the AWD trim with only the CVT. That should tell you something about what they expect from the majority of young male drivers. Ironically, the majority of customers who buy the Nissan Juke are females.

AWD also comes with a better rear suspension.

It is a fun little car, though your gas mileage will be around 25mpg or less if you do anything other than lock cruise control in at 55-65mph. Combine that with the small gas tank in the AWD and you can only go 230-250 miles on a tank, which is annoying on trips.

I see your point, but it's silly to get something new. Get something CPO, a few years old. For a long commute I'd consider something with decent mileage. Thoughts:

- RAV4 V6
- Highlander Hybrid/RXh
- EX35
- RDX/CR-V
- Crosstour (perhaps you are the one person it's meant for!)
- Forester
- Venza
