My Oil Light is Flickering and I have No Leak???
Im not sure if this belongs in the 2.0 Liter forums but my situation is kinda unique. I think my rex is eating oil, I know this because it isn't leaking any oil at all.
I think this started happening once I put on aftermarket headers from grimmspeed with the high flow pipe. I also got TGV deletes and pnp everything. I have a 3 inch catless exhaust, with a vf34 and pinks. I am running a 02 wrx with about 65k on it. I notice right after I put on my grimmspeed headers that there was a 3 foot trail from my cat back. It was little spots of black stuff, I felt it and it was just wet and ashy. It did not feel like oil. NO leaks what so ever. No leaks from the turbo, no leaks from underneath the car, no where. ANd it doesnt even smell like its burning. No smoke at all. But, after about driving a good 2,000 miles. I notice my OIL LIGHT is flickering. And it does it when I come to a hard stop. Its like the oil in my engine is flushing back and forth when I stop and causing the Oil Light to come on. I just put in half a quart of oil but it still does it. So Im going to completely change my oil tomorrow and watch it like a hawk. But....I dont know what the cause of this is. If my turbo is going bad and its just eating oil. If this is usually normal and I have to put in 1 quart every 1,000 miles. If I've driven over 2,000 miles then Im sure my car has consumed over 2 quarts. I NEVER had this problem on stage 2. Now on stage 4 with a new turbo and aftermarket headers it seems to be a constant thing that my car is eating oil.

Oil light=Low oil.
When you come to a hard stop its coming on becuase your oil is probably near 2 quarts low already. Get a compression test. STOP DRIVING YOUR CAR AND HAVE IT FIXED. |

The condensation built up in your muff gets spit out when you fire up the car. It's not related to the GrimmSpead manifold (which is sweet by the way, I have it too), it's just what cars do.
What oil are you using? Have you checked it since 2000 miles ago? You may have lost enough again.... |

For now I would top it up and check the oil level every day or so. If you're going through that much oil I would think you should see/smell it coming out the exhaust.

Anyways its obvious but Im trying to figure out the reason why my car is consuming oil. I do see white smoke out of my exhaust but this is when its COLD and Im also Catless so I figure that is normal, its not thick white smoke and it seems normal. I really dont smell burning, but then again I can barely smell my own farts. I put in 1 1/2 quarts and drove it around and it seemed fine. The oil I use switches from Valvoline to Castrol Syn and Ive stayed at 10w-30 for the last 3-4 months. HOWEVER, I have been using Puralator PURE 1 oil filter which I HOPE is not the cause of the problem so I switched to a better oil filter (Fram Tough Guard) and I usually use OEM filters but Subaru dealership is closed on weekends. I know its not the infamous TUBE failure which is the tube in the oil pan. For the long distances I drive my engine would have seized up on me already. I cant really assume what the problem is because I never dealt with this before. Some people say its normal for WRX/STI cars to eat oil. But, I never seen my car eat this much oil on stage 2 set up. Either my turbo is dying, or Im loosing pressure, and I will research to see if anyone has similar problems and if they fixed it. But, if anyone knows throw me a bone. |

if the oil light has been 'flickering' your engine wont last long
start planning a new engine and do some research on oil....PLEASE |

Oil light comes on when you lose oil pressure, usually because of a lack of oil. When you lose oil pressure and continue to drive your car, you've most likely damaged your engine

Oil light comes on when the oil pressure is very low. Really only a few reasons you'd have excessively low pressure to cause the light to flicker.
First and most obvious and probably your problem is low oil, the dip tube sucking up air and its loosing pressure. Second is a failing pump which is unlikely since they dont usually "kind of" fail. They just crap out, light comes on, and motor blows up.... Third is excessively worn motor tolerances of seals and bearings arent what they used to be and cant provide the resistance to maintain a normal pressure. However even still they generally maintain a usable amount of pressure, this is very unlikely in your case... If I were to guess I'd assume the turbo is burning the oil. Its hot enough in there that small amounts can burn off with minimum smoke that could be unnoticeable. That is most likely as I see a lot of threads pop up about oil consumption with no source which generally lead back to the turbo. It would be a bad idea to check your intercooler for oil. A light coating maybe normal but you shouldnt be able to dump it out. Or it could be on the hot side and you cant tell. Have a compression and leakdown test done to see how well the combustion system is isolated from everything else. If that comes back good I would just assume its the turbo and replace it.... |

Oil light means low pressure, not necessarily low oil.
You can have all the oil in the world, but if there's no pressure, then you're just as f***d. Recommend you check the entire system for problems (pickup tube, pump, the pressure sensor itself etc....) |

I hope I'm not the sucker that buys this "used" car...
When you change your oil, measuer how many quarts come out... It's obvious you don't know how your car works. PLEASE read your manual. It has all the answers you need. Quote:
- Who or what told you that this was enough oil?!? Again, the dip stick has markings for a reason. Fill it up to full means to fill it up. It's obvious your car is consuming oil. Where, we don't have a clue. You need to do what others have stated above and get a leakdown/compression check. You should also take off the intercooler and see if it's full of oil. My 192k mile engine does the same thing but I check the oil level every other gas fill-up.
Over 3000 miles I have to put anywhere between 1qt-1.75qt, depending upon how hard I've been driving it.... I keep an extra bottle in the spot where I used to have my jack, it's like the perfect holder |

1 quart loss per 1k miles can be possible. so in 3k miles, you can lose up to 3 quarts. but i'd recommend you change your oil real soon if you're at 3k mark.

You guys are flamers, this is a noob section and you guys are flaming like a bunch of arrogant bastards. Listen, I researched my oil, I've researched oil consumption, I've researched the "pick up tube failure" threads, I've read Unabombers threads, I KNOW Puralator PURE 1 makes OEM filters, never once blamed it. I said I hope thats not the problem. I know what Im doing, I installed all my giddy aftermarket parts. I made my car a stage 4 car, I am not arrogant what so ever and ask for simple ideas on what could cause my oil consumption. So here we go....
I changed my oil, used Castrol 10w-30, used fram tough guard filter. I drove TODAY 130 miles, I drove my car HARD and was asking for punishment. I maxed out on 4th gear, car is running STRONG. I come home, let my car cool down. I check the oil and guess what.................... Its FULL Thanks for nothing guys, the only person here I would give kudos to is the person who suggested that my turbo is burning the oil because that is what I thought it was in the first place. And don't be telling "go search newb, noob, N00b, Newbie" because in the sticky rules on this forum it says "No flaming, No telling Go Search Newb!" Damn There could be so many reasons why a car would consume oil, and I've tried to give as much detail I could to get a rational, reasonable, theory so I could start looking in the right area. There is only 1 person here who gave USEFUL information that is CynicX. Yes my car is eating oil, yes there are so many people on here that say "oh its normal for your car to eat 1 quart every 1,000k thats what subaru says". But, seriously its not okay and there are people who can run their car without it eating that much oil and others are unfortunate and think its normal. Why do you think Im on here. And paintbing go on a different forum, and I hope you are not the sucker thats buys my used car. I'm already going to build a bigger engine or get an STI swap so I dont care if you think my engine is going to blow up. Guess what, I maxed out 4th today 3 times and my engine is strong and smooth like butter. And the oil is at a perfect level. I guess it was just a fluke.................now Im going to crash my car at 12 mph and blame the turbo.....excuse me |

Im getting compression check this week, I got an 18g sitting next to me if its actually my current turbo thats causing the problem. After recent oil change my oil level is perfect, Im going to watch it like a hawk and check it everyday. EDIT: Your above post came in before I finished... You've been a member for over a year. So the "new member" and "new members to feel welcome" rule is out. And I didn't see any sillyness in your original question.
Quote:
Okay, you want reasons why your car could eat oil... -Turbo Seals going out (Intake side would yeild oil in the intercooler - I already told you to pull it and check) - Exhaust side will not yield much if anything. If the leak was really bad, you would have oil dripping out your exhaust. -ANY oil seal on the car going bad (Crank, Cam, banjo fittings etc..) - this would yield oil stains on the driveway and under your car. You already stated that it was clean, so I didn't mention this. -Valve oil seals are failing and need to be replaced. You need to pull the head off completely to change these. I didn't mention this cause you are too lazy to add enough oil to make it full, so why would you start to pull your motor to replace these little guys anyway? - Regardless if it was these, they 'could' show some smoke, but not always. My motor had these seals start to go and I burned a qt every 1000 miles. If you are going to tear the motor apart, it's a great idea to replace these. -Oil rings on the pistons are shot - Like both myself and others already stated... Get a compression check. There are MANY people that have 'strong' running motors from the butt dyno and have a low running cylinder. Get a compression check. -Excessive blowby. - Do you have an oil catch can? Does it fill up quickly? How are we supposed to tell you what is the exact cause?!?! We told you to do some tests and you come back and flip out for being flamed. You need to calm down and do the tests. However since you can't even keep the oil full, I doubt you will be able to perform a compression test. What I really want to know is how you were able to build your car to where it is now and not understand the logic with the oil... However you are asking in the newbie forum, so in essence you are calling yourself a newb. Not us. Here's some good reading for you when you have a minute. http://www.ehow.com/how_7692_respond...paign=yssp_art http://autorepair.about.com/b/2007/0...s-business.htm Last edited by paintbing; 12-13-2008 at 11:03 PM. |

If you just wrote that and not all the arrogant rude junk before and after I'd actually be thankful. But, the fact that your here on a saturday night searching for newbs to flame makes me question your life style. I am here on a saturday night trying to figure out what the root cause of the problem is. Isn't that what this whole site is made for? Or have you got all confused and figure you could develop a bigger ego with this site? Nobody knows who you are, or can put a picture on your face, your just a name with a egotistic arrogant attitude like I've met so many like you and I loath your type of breed. Every MOD on my car is a FIRST time for me, bolt on MODS are EASY to do, it just takes time, tools, and effort. I've done my exhaust, down pipe, up pipe, EWG set up, Turbo upgrade, injectors, Intake manifold, headers, tranny mount, CAI, etc. The things I have not done, engine removal, engine being taken apart, tranny replacement, the big boy stuff. I dont have a cherry picker, I dont have tools for a compression check, I DO however have friends that have all these tools but no one is available at 10 pm on a saturday night. No one but you I'm a newb, proud to be a newb, will probably be a newb for the next year or so, but I do my mods, because I enjoy it, I frigging love it, I learn from it. I know how to change my oil, I know how to check my oil, and I know what velocity of oil I should use at this time of year, and I know what type of oil to use during racing applications. However, I DO NOT know why my car would eat oil when there is no leak, no smoke, no knock, and recently being protuned 3 weeks ago the logs looked frigging good. If you were more humble about your knowledge you could go far in life, you could even develop a friend or two. But, no one on here will admire you no matter how much knowlege you have simply because of your superior "Im better then you" attitude. You simply want to degrade people. So, if you need help finding other newb threads to flame so you can feed your ego drop me a PM and I will send you some links or actually create some threads specifically for you to flame. I would have better luck in the 2.0 forums. Why any "scooby specialist" would lurk on the newb forums just to post this junk baffles me. This area is a minefield. |
