Default Allstate Insurance sucks

Here is a rant for you all and I hope some of you learn a lesson from my stupid mistake. Back inn 2000 I had Allstate insurance. The vehicles covered was a 2001 Celica GTS and my POS 1993 Ford Escort GT (both full coverage *state minimum) @ $130 a month. At the time I was 30 years old with no accidents or tickets. Then In progressed to a 2004 WRX and the same asphalt ripping 1993 Escort GT for about $140 a month with full coverage (state minimum). Then I traded in the 2004 WRX for a 2006 STI and my insurance jumped to $180+ a month with the street stomping Escort GT on the plan. I then saw a few car insurance commercials on the TV and looked around for a cheaper rate because I got a letter from my local Allstate agent that they wanted to redo my policy. Next I found out that Progressive wanted $80 a month for both vehicles ($100,000/$300,000) coverage) for both. My wife and I went to Allstate and wanted to tell them we found a better deal and wanted to see if they could match it. To my surprise they told me there was no way we could get that price and doubted we actually had a quote that low. They then gave me a quote of $140 a month. I was like a month ago you quoted us a price of $180 a month and now you mysteriously find a new quote of $140
? So great of you guys to find the highest rate for us on a insurance plan. We then went to Progressive (Direct. Not a local agent) and got the $80 a month plan with more coverage. Lesson learned… Shop around for car insurance. I just saved $1200 a year!!!

That's pretty much the way the business works. It's funny though, I've always found Allstate to be on the lower end of the spectrum for me. although when it came to home owners insurance they really blew it. You pretty much summed it up though, you must shop around.

Our allstate agents are really really nice... But their price is super high when compared to others.

If they can get that dollar out of your pocket with out you complaining they are going to do it. That's there job. Allstate is on the cheap side for me too. My monthly bill dropped about in half when I switched over to them. There will always be someone cheaper if you look hard enough. It's not so much the name of the company but the people who are helping you. Your agent has everything to do with how much you're paying.

Auto insurance in general is one big scam. Always shop around. It's amazing how wildly rates vary between companies. I've been with Allstate, Geico, Progressive, Liberty Mutual, and NJ Cure in the past. Each time my renewal comes around, I always call around and often times, another provider will give me a rate that's much less than what my current provider is offering. I just switched from Progressive to Geico 2 months ago because Geico offered a rate that was $200 less for 6 months with the same coverage.

FWIW, I'm now paying the equivalent of about $80/mo on my '06 WRX in TX under Geico.

In 2003, I used to pay around $200/mo for an '03 BMW 330ci in NJ with NJ Cure although when I originally purchased it, I was under State Farm and they quoted me $250/mo.

And as a comparison, back in 1997, I used to pay about $90/mo for a '96 BMW 328is in NC under Geico when that same car in 1996 in NJ was around $180/mo under Liberty Mutual.

what it comes down to and me working for an insurance company is every company has its own acturaies (they are the people who determine risk and ultimately your rates). Thus if allstate has a high number of accidents or comprehensive losses with that car then be prepared to pay more. This new company may raise your rates later when they see more risk with your STI.

It is *always* in your best interest to shop around for insurance rates every six months to a year. Twenty years ago, there was something to be said for customer loyalty among businesses and some companies were known for trying to keep their existing customers. Not true today.

Most of the time, when you get a quote, it will be lower three months later from someone else. People buy car insurance, and continue to pay nearly the same rate year after year because they don't really think much about it, so they don't really think much about shopping around for it.

Occasionally your insurance company will throw you a bone and lower your rate slightly...maybe once every two years. But it is usually significantly higher than you could get elsewhere if you switched.

And as I mentioned before, they'll never match rates to keep you. They'll drop your ass in a heartbeat and steal someone else's customer away with a rate lower than they'd offer you. It isn't just car insurance either. Cell Phone companies and cable companies also do it. They'll offer a rate to get customers but won't give you a better rate as an existing customer. Same for most jobs. I hear people in multiple companies that they can't give one of their employees a raise to the rate that they would hire in someone new at with less experience. And companies wonder why they don't have any employee loyalty anymore.

In any case, sorry for the rant. At least once a year, call around to at least 5 different insurance companies for rates. You are guaranteed to save cash.

Another thing to ask when you shop around for quotes....find out how much the company values your car at. If it were totalled today, how much would you get. Every company is different. You might find that Progressive charges $5/month more than State Farm, but would pay $2000 more for your car if it were totalled.

+1 Progressive.

i have state farm and i paid $90 for a 94 integra with a clean ass driving record and multiple discounts. what the? now im paying $200 for the 05 wrx and it will be going up to $265 because of the damn remote start accident that i had (reason why i got the wrx since the integra was totalled out, considering the only thing damaged was the front bumper and scratches on the fender and door.) state farm sucks.

been lookin around... already finding cheaper rates. everything is ridiculously high over here in california...

Exactly, I'm 21 and have insane discounts because my agent likes me, right now I'm getting an over 25 discount on my Honda and on my old Subaru (sold to my mom but still have the title) I have an over 30 discount.
