Default 2014 Subaru Forester

See the extensive gallery and press release

Aggressive 2014 Forester Revealed in Los Angeles

Hot on the heels of a very successful 2012, Subaru is shaking things up with its introduction of the all-new 2014 Forester. With this iteration the successful five-seater gets more than a mid-cycle refresh; that means it has more room inside, better performance and higher fuel economy.

New for 2014 is a 250-horsepower 2.0-liter boxer with direct injection and a turbo - similar to an engine we may see in the much-rumored BRZ STI. The base model Forester retains a 2.5-liter, naturally-aspirated 170-hp unit.

As usual for Subaru, the Forester uses the trademark Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system, but this time, when equipped with a 2.5i and a CVT owners can enjoy a top-end 32mpg on the highway. (24 city, 27 combined)

To score more room on the inside the new platform features a 0.9-inch longer wheelbase (growing to 103.9-inches total.) Length is increased 1.4-inches. Yes, it's the biggest Forester yet. Will this new super-size impact the drive? We'll have to wait until January when we'll have a chance to put it through its paces.

Top-end models gain a new X-Mode control (we assume this is some sort of differential lock, we have a call in for confirmation) for the All-Wheel Drive system, in addition to Hill Descent Control, both welcome inclusions.

One of the big issues with most crossovers in this class is the lack of ride-height. Most top out at only 7 or 8 inches of clearance. Here, the new Forester doesn't disappoint, boasting 8.7-inches of total ground clearance.

If you're looking for more street style, Subaru has provided the turbo-charged 2.0XT with sport-tuned suspension, 18-inch wheels and larger, ventilated brakes. All the things you need, sans a stick option - yes, the turbo is only available in an automatic. Natch.

no scoop for the intercooler? probably won't be on the Legacy GT either. I doubt they'd take it away for the WRX and/or STI.

I like it lots of great improvements. I guess the rationale for not bringing us a 6 speed is that it is a low volume seller per the webcast last night.

Overall it looks good... Like everybody else I'd prefer a hood scoop and standard box, but I've been considering one for my wife's next car and she doesn't care for either.

Turbo layout appears to be bottom-turbo like the LGT so hopefully they'll keep that going for all their upcoming models (and keep the 40ish hp gap with the WRX)... 250hp isn't bad either, depending on how many pounds it gained from the 1" longer wheelbase.

X-mode sounds pretty nice too, I guess a bare-bones DCCD for the CVT's.

I wonder where the turbo location is on that engine? It would be cool if it was like the newer LGT with the low mounted turbo. Bummer about no manual option for the XT though...

From what I've heard from a local dealership, there is still a tmic, but it has ductwork from the top of the grill flowing under the hood to the tmic.

^Yep. The bump in the middle of the hood appears to be what gives room in there for the air duct from the grille to TMIC.

Definitely bottom turbo layout like the LGT's, look at the pipe running along the passenger side of the engine, that's coming from the turbo to intercooler.

Aerodynamics.

I wouldn't be surprised if the next WRX/STI didn't have one. The WRC team went scoopless before they pulled out. They may keep it "just 'cause", but would be smart to get rid of it.

Fugly... like most of Subaru's new lineup. (like most new vehicles for that matter) But that's just my opinion, if you guys like it, then right on! Mileage rating is pretty solid. Stick that turbo 2.0 in the BRZ already.....

*edit* i like the design, i miss the scoop mustangs and challengers have nonfunctional scoops! aero-smero-dynamics.
