Yes and I am guessing from some figures I have gotten in the low neighborhood of about $1500 if you do the labor your self and that doesn't count that the center driveshaft will mate up. That and you will be losing trade in value as well as if you go turbo you will have to look into a better clutch as well as everybody's favorite manual mod the Kartboy Shifter and bushings. If the auto fails me then I will consider it depending on if my knee ever heals completely from the surgery(strangely luck I got an automatic since I really wanted a manual and then that happened shortly afterwords).

You would be better off selling your auto and buying a manual. It's very time consuming and expen$ive. I thought it would cost a lot more than $1500. I remember a post about this. I think it's in the tech forum.

John that's for parts only and with alittle hook up from some fellow members. Otherwise it would exceed $2500-$3000. BTW John you in Southern CA? If so we have a BBQ this weekend if you look in the SCIC forum.

too much. Besides the tranny, the AWD system has to be changed.

Hey,
Where did you guys get your numbers?! If it only cost 1500$, I would of done it a long time ago. I am in the process of exchanging my 99 auto RS for a 99 manual RS! That is the only way to go! If you are thinking of switching; the whole drive train, the hole for the clutch, the ecu, the AWD system, and the whole transmission has to be changed. According to my dealer who is very experienced in the Subaru world, he said that it would cost me a new transmission, a new clutch, and a lot of extra items to add or change. And anyway, your warranty would go to scrap! I personaly think that you should try to find a dealer who has a used manual RS, and try to switch, the autos are still more expensive, and they have a better resale value, so that should cover it with the salesman! I hope my deal goes through, the only problem is that I would be switching from Rally Blue to Black. Take care Jan |

You can get the transmission, ecu, requisite parts for rewiring, differentials and rear drivetrain components, shift linkage, and mounting equipment for $1500? WHERE?! Sign me up, because I'll buy it all just so I can sell it back for a profit.
This has been discussed before. It's expensive, time consuming, and flat out NOT worth it. Can it be done? Sure, but I doubt anyone would care to try... [edit] Wrote this at exactly the same time as the person above... yep. It's true. Greg. [This message has been edited by Greg I (edited May 25, 2000).] |

I thought levelten.com could do something to the auto to make it shift a little more responsively at a much cheaper price than swaping everything to a manual?

I looked into it, believe me. It's true, you have to change everything, because the 4aet controls the AWD as well as the gears.
Realizing it's going to cost me an arm and a leg, I'm going to switch from an auto TS to a 5spd RS (but hey, atleast now I get better brakes, ABS, sunroof, more power and cooler styling all packed into one little car exchange) No muss, no fuss, new car is the way to go! |

[quote]I have gotten in the low neighborhood of about $1500 if you do the labor yourself[quote]
Junkyards don't exist(uh-oh I can hear Joel crying if this were true)? What are you all looking at new stuff exclusively? This also isn't exclusively from junkyards and also doesn't mean that they will be in perfect condition for the price. Also why would the rear differential have to absolutely need to be replaced? The housing or the gearing? I ask that because if you search back there was someone that Dale Teague posted pictures of on his website of their WRX converted Impreza wagon that used the automatic rear differential on it and it was a manual. I may not have done as much research as you all seem to have but like I said before I will consider it if the auto tranny fails for some reason (after the turbo who knows) and the knee is up to it. When and if I do then we will know exactly what all it will take. (\/\/) [___] .Rich. |

You would also have to put another pedal in and change the brake pedal. Just another little tidbit from King Dingaling.

Oh, yeah, didn't even think about that. Not just put in another pedal -- change out the entire pedal box. This wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing though...
