After 6 months and 12,000 miles on a MY99 with the original MAF. I can't remember what the stock intake felt like anymore.

Power really kicks in at 2500 rpm and goes all the way till it bounces off the limiter. The scream from the intake is just that, a loud Honda muffler from the front. Now I've still got the stock muffer, but the Stromung midpipe. With this combo I can control just how quiet or loud the car can be. Keep it under 4000 rpm and 1/2 throttle and she can be stock quiet. Floor it and set off a few car alarms. Power gains are on par with most other full-tube intakes /w heat shields. Build quality is extremely good. Even after 3/4 of a Chicago winter /w salt everywhere, nothing on the intake has yet to corrode.

IMHO this is one of the top intakes for the RS on the market.

It is also one of the priciest intakes, but you get what you pay for.

very happy with mine also. i have a friend with one of the "other" intakes on the board and there is a very noticable difference in our cars between 3K and 5K: mine pulls faster and more smoothly than his. this is also a VERY loud intake at WOT.

Its a well designed and executed intake. However, all that R&D isn't free and the end user pays the price. If you can afford it, its one of the best intake systems for the RS.

I have one of the few (3?) '98 RalliSpec intakes. Yes, it is a little more expensive than most, but you do get what you pay for. Plus you get that cool catch-can as part of the deal. I've had mine for over a year and run over 20 autoxs with it and no problems. Not that I expected any to crop up. But, then again, don't expect much HP gain if any, unless you set up to a decent exhaust system (headers, hi-flow cat, bigger midpipe). The intake is part of a system.

If it eliminates the torque chamber--the black box that sits on top of the throttle body--then I think it's a very bad idea for a naturally aspirated engine.

The reason everyone feels a surge in the midrange is because their low end is in the toilet without the torque chamber. Part throttle response probably sucks too, since the intake manifold plenum is so small.

Not particularly, why? I was just offering my thoughts on the matter before someone put their money into it.

Ask Trey Cobb and Larry Ganz why their intakes keep the torque chamber. Particularly Trey, since he dyno tested with and without the torque chamber.

I dont understand. One person says its good. Then two people say its bad. No hp. Come on there has to be a hp gain. Not alot like 5 hp maybe. Thats weird that some people are for it and some are not. I do thing with inhale you need exhale. But if you do inhale you will get the noise plus a hp gain. Sport compact car said some thing about the black box being removed hurts performance. On the older ones with the air mass sensor. Do I no what I am talking about or am I blowing smoke out my ass. Thanks for all the reply's I really like this board alot. Subaru are #1

2.5rsMI, i dun think they disputing or arguing at all that its bad cause of the 5hp gain, its a matter of where that 5hp is going. i mean, u could have a 20hp peak gain but would it really be worth it if at the same time your low end torque is completely shot?

i wouldnt be too suprised (i actually kinda agree) that the surge in the upper ranges is caused by a loss in the low end...i mean, how often do people calibrate their butt dyno's to accurately measure these type of things? hey that brings up another interesting question, how exactly does a butt dyno work? are the results based on how much their @$$ fat jiggles or what?

edit: just to add one more thing, i think some of the people above were also tryin to point out that cobb's (which is like a better version of larry's but more expensive) intake is a proven setup and is 100$ cheaper. i don't want to take any praise away from the rallispec intake cuz i honestly don't know much about them (keep in mind that i have no idea whether or not it does compromise low end torque for better peak performance). in the end, i think you'll be happy with your new intake, regardless of which company it comes from. both r great subaru tuners

(not taking sides, but) last i checked there was no dyno charts posted for either Cobb Tuning's or Rallispec's intake ALONE

Rallispec DID post about the dyno result of their intake, but it was coupled with S-AFC and 2.25"/2.5" catback http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/Foru...ML/003155.html

Trey also posted dyno charts of his N/A build, which concentrate mainly on the comparison between different camshafts, but no intake http://www.i-club.com/ubb-files/Foru...ML/000400.html

however by recent post it sounded like Trey has some data regarding his intakes, but i'm sure he's a busy man and just need some time to get it sorted out and posted (so you guys stop bugging him about buying an intake so we can all see some numbers )

the only things we know for sure are:

- Rallispec's is $100 more, but comes with a vapor catch-can, and can used on pre-MY00 MAF equipped cars
- both have some sort of design to avoid warm air: Trey's avoids the engine bay by sucking the cold air from bumper vent, while Rallispec's has a heat shield

so unless you put those 2 intakes side-by-side and dyno them, you cannot say one is better than another simply by looking at it or via your butt dyno
