Wife and I are in about the same boat. Right now, we have an '05 E320 4matic sitting in the garage (friend owns car dealership and is letting us try it out for a week or so) and I have to say that I'm VERY impressed with the car. It has plenty of room (very large trunk), comfortable seating, great looks, and probably the smoothest shifting slushbox that I have ever driven. I'm hoping my wife feels that it is comfortable enough for her back on long trips. She is taking it on a 100 mile trip later in the week so we'll see. I still want her to drive an A6 and a new Maxima. I wish we had an Infiniti dealership around here because I'd like her to drive an M35 AWD.

Porsche Cayene.... Used if you have to make that budget. My rents got the base cayene back a year or more ago for less than $45k and LOVE it. The base cayene with 6mt is supposed to start at ~$40k so a used base cayene should fit the bill. Best SUV I've ever driven.

If not Dicmo knows a lot about the X3 (they just got one) and he likes it a lot. It's less expensive. Personally I'm not a fan of the MB SUVs but that's just me and I've done nothing in terms of research. I just don't like the looks of them...

Buy a fork lift. You'll never run out of parking for it.

My wife bought her RX330 with a sticker of $39,200 back in '04. Should be around the same price. Nice ride, Toyota quality. That price is the "poor man's model" though. No Navi, chromies, or other bling bling factors. She loves it.

used BMW 540 or A6 4.2(V8) would be cool. She wants an auto i assume? Even a used E class Merc would be cool.

If I had a choice between these two, and luxury is the preference, I'd go with the M35. Very nice car, nice classy lines.

I don't listen to their reviews, but I do listen to their reliability surveys, which is probably what CR rags on the VW and Porsche SUVs for.
