I don't know what else to say, the valve adjustment appears to have solved the problem and despite the cost, I will probably stick with the Subaru branded 5w-30 synthetic for all future oil changes.

With regard to the cost of the oil change charged by the dealer, I'm not going to bother hassling them about it. Not that 100 bucks is chump change, but I have better things to do with my life.
We've had a couple of wrx's like this. The guy who had the first one lost his ass on it though. Both ended up being valve adjustments and never came back.

What do you mean 'lost his ass on it'? You mean he had to pay for the repair?

Not that it helps, but I've got the exact same issue. I've had to bring my '11 WRX in to my dealership 3 times for the same problem. Misfire on all 4 cylinders. I've tried 6 different gas stations and my oil has been changed by Subaru, so I assume they are using the right oil. Still having the same problem.

You're not alone.....

so the oil change interval for the 2011 WRX is every 7500 miles if you're using synthetic?

3,750 miles for "hard use." I'd go with that.

Synthetic is a requirement for the 2011 WRX.

7500 is the longest interval you can go for, no need to change at 3,500 anymore....

i Have the same exact problem as well, stock 2012 wrx with 6K on it has been in the shop twice for same misfire codes, horrible idle, and surging at low rpms. Give me the damn valve adjustment, or better yet, a new car that hasnt been running with incorrect valve clearance for 6,000 miles

Don't ever assume the dealers use the right oil. I don't have an STI, but I was thinking of putting the EXTRA-S gear oil in my 2.5, so I called 3 Subaru dealerships here in Toronto to inquire about the price, all 3 had never heard of EXTRA-S... considering that it states in the STI manual that EXTRA-S gear oil is mandatory for current STIs.

These dealerships didn't have it, makes you wonder what they use on new STI transmissions.

They can use whatever they want. They aren't mandated by subaru to use stock stuff. So as a parts manager who wants to make profit they will buy what will make them the most that meets the minimum requirements by subaru. Quite frankly most of subaru's stuff is way over priced compared to the aftermarket.

So your statemtment that they use the wrong oil is incorrect. They use the proper weight that meets the requirements that subaru wants. Then they will stock synthetic stuff as well as subaru synthetic oil.

I wasn't implying that they use the wrong oil, I was implying that they don't stock the correct oil.

Where is an STI owner going get EXTRA-S? Can't buy it it in quarts, they come in 5 gallon containers.

Why should an STI owner have to look else where other than the dealership if he wants EXTRA-S just because the dealerships don't stock it. Shouldn't SOA force the dealerships to sell stuff that's required in the manual?

I was just stating that just because the manual say "X" should be use, doesn't mean that the dealership will use "X" stated by the manual, which is ironic.

You can buy Extra-s by the quart from various vendors here. Boston Motorsports, Fred Beans, and a few other i believe.

Legally SOA can only force the dealer to use that if SOA pays for it (IE warranty pay) As long as the oil meets SOA's requirements they are good to go. That said, any dealer personnel with two brain cells to rub together will only recommend and sell OE parts as that is what sets us apart from the corner garage.

Gotta go 6pm quittin time!

Rule of the internet is that people who have no problems don't post to complain. Obviously a lot of people you see will be complaining of problems, it is why they are posting.

You're still not getting the point. Subaru recommends any fluid with a gl5 rating or better for the trans I believe. The manual states that not car must take what it came with from the factory. So now play parts manager. Do I wanna stock fluid that comes in quarts or do I wanna stock something that comes in a 5 gallon container that's going to take up room and you gotta pump it out when you need fluid. Make more sense now? Instead of bitching about Subaru bitch about who ever makes extra-s. if they distributed on quarts or liters I'm sure most dealers would stock it.

Damn, my 2012 WRX hatch is having the same issues of CEL: all cylinder misfire, and it comes on when idling due to tons of bogging. Got about 8k miles.

Based on what I've read so far, I'm going to swap plugs first. I think i read another thread which mentioned that there was a leak on the intake side of things? found when then removed the intercooler? That or a valve adjustment, yikes.

Brand new car... take it to the dealership? You paid for a warranty, might as well use it.

Food for thought: 2011+ turbo lof interval is 7,500 mi. Efficiently running stock motor can burn up to 1 qt every 3750 mi. Most A-holes dont check their oil level nearly as often as they should. Proper turbo lubrication is absolutely critical for longevity. What i'm saying is dont just fill it up with gas, never open the hood, beat the crap out of your car, and then run your motor 2 qts low on oil at lof intervals, & then bitch when your "pos subaru" is in the shop. The coking process begins & your turbo WILL fail prematurely. If driven hard & modded, every 2k miles. stock, stick to 3750 tops.

As far as oils: syn 5w-30, 75w-90 & LSD 75/80-90 for rear diff (provided you're not in extreme climates)

As for the similarly described misfire/driveability issues, its not the oil, its likely tight exhaust valves. (but use the rec. oil)

I have 2010 SE STI, Cobb Stage I + AEM. car has been using Rotella T6 5w-40 for last 35k miles. no issues.

burn about 1qt every oil change, mostly from PCV blowby.
S# can run up to 18PSI. MobileOne 5w-30 burned like no tomorrow, I had to use T6.

if your turbo run beyond stock 14.7PSI, heavier Rotella is a good idea.

Any update on your issue?

I had the same thing happen on my '12 WRX. The first time was on 5/20/13 when I was at 44,694 miles (yes, I drive a TON). That time was just a misfire on cylinder 1. More recently, on 7/26, my CEL came back on and I pulled P0301 through P0304 -- misfire on all 4 cylinders. A couple of weeks later, I put in some injector cleaner. Driving home last night, I noticed the CEL had cleared itself. Glad it happened when it did because I had an appointment to bring it in tomorrow.

I change my oil religiously at 7,500 miles with 5W-30 Mobil 1 full synthetic and don't really drive my car too hard.

I have a 2013 wrx and it had multiple misfires also. I just got it back and they said it was something with the wiring harness at B-21 connector.

From the maintence report:

Opened harness at b-21 connector under and inspected crimp connection for grounds inside harness, crimp was tight and clean, solder connection per request of tech line anyway and reassembled harness.

They also said my 4th cylinder had a tight intake valve. Hope this helps.

Do not run this oil for 7,500 miles unless you're adding 2 qts of M1 15W-50. It shears to a 20 grade oil in less than 3k miles.
