Moving to SLC?
Hey guys,
I was hoping to get some input from some locals out there. I'm thinking about picking up at moving to SLC to catch the end of the ski season and just get out west finally. Any advice? I've noticed rooms around Sandy go for between 300 and 700 and that's about the area I'd be looking to live in. What's it like living around there? Any advice for a guy looking to pack a car or two full of stuff and leave in the next few weeks? I'm currently looking at ski resort jobs, primarily ones as a server since I do have a lot of experience with that. Also have a lot of experience with journalism (worked for a magazine for three years), and have a master's degree, but I'll do just about any work so long as it pays enough to survive and ski. Any advice for someone who hopes to make it out there within a month would be very appreciated. Cheers

Journalism market in Utah, like nearly every where else, is awful. It's a little late in the season to be snagging a resort job too, though I have no specific info on their situations right now.
Sandy is a sprawling suburb with some core retail on its southern end along I-15. Mostly it's residential communities with some nicer neighborhoods on its eastern end. You're going to get a bunch of posts saying how Utah sucks, how there's no nightlife, how the Mormons control your brain and eat your Lunchables etc. Take it with a grain of salt. SLC's culture or lack thereof is no secret. You'll hate it if you're expecting bar crawls and 24/7 social life. You'll love it if you want to be 20 minutes from the mountains, 30 minutes from the desert, four hours from the red rock and within eight hours of Vegas, the Grand Canyon, the Rockies, the Sawtooths and so forth. |

I'd probably look for a year-round serving position at a place like Snowbird as I realize the ski season is about to end. Probably wouldn't be looking to work as a journalist, though I'm not opposed to office work.

Hey man. Drop me a PM or e-mail. I moved from Baltimore to Salt Lake two years ago. I recently was laid off (journalism/newspaper), and moved back to Baltimore. I knew nothing about the state and had nowhere to live when I went out there. I'd be glad to help anyways I can.
FYI, I lived in Murray/Tayorsville. My apartment was friggin awesome, close to downtown, close to the Bird, and not "Utah Ghetto." |

I think you are going to have a hard time finding anything right now especially along those lines. If I were you, I would find something it the tele-services industry so you can pay the bills, then when the seasons over and people leave the resorts, start applying up there. Park City would be good, because they have year round services. Just my 0.02.
FYI, I know American Express is hiring through Kelly Services and with a degree, if would be easy. |

I live in a new townhouse in Sandy and so far its been a really nice place to live, I have also lived in the Murray/Taylorsville area and its not too bad there either. My room mate is looking to move out, so if you need a place to live after finding a job and what not let me know.

I've lived in Utah for almost 22 years. I have zero complaints, except the wacky weather we have.

^^ The only ****ty weather this place gets is inversions!
I moved here about 2 years ago, and the locals will take the most getting used to IMO, for me it was a big adjustment. Once that happens with that, it is a great state to live in. I moved from Alaska and have no plans on going back anytime soon. This was my experience moving here 2 years ago. Cost of living in Utah is low compared to the national average, and there are lots of good inexpensive places to live. My 2c is live close to your work, where ever that will be. |

I worked in Provo, mecca of the LDS. I had no trouble adjusting, but realized I didn't really fit in per say. My beard, potty mouth and love for craft beer didn't help either. Alas, I miss it. I was forced out when I was unexpectedly laid off. I think I'd move back if given the chance with a better company. Very cliche, but if you like the outdoors, it's great. I think the weather was awesome (coming from humid east coast). And I had no trouble finding new friends. |

To the OP, honestly, you shouldn't have an issue finding a job or a good place to live. Just be flexible, you might not find exactly what you are looking for at first, but things do come around and it's not a bad place to live. I live on the west side of Salt Lake City, which people on the east side say is bad and I've never had an issue. Just walk out of your house carrying an M4 and tactical gear every once in a while and people will think your nuts and leave you alone. |

job turnover is huge this time of year as the resort employees start to burn out or flake out or both. Apply at Snowbird for one of many jobs, serving may not be an option though. In addition, Snowbird will have the longest season by far compared to everybody else who will likely stay open until Easter Weekend and maybe one weeked beyond before they close, regardless of snow depth or conditions.
The Bird will stay open as long as conditions permit, possibly Memorial Day weekend and at times and on very deep seasons as long as 4th of July. Good luck and save some of the pow for us locals! |

Just a little bit more background. I'm also a hiker, camper and climber. I'm an expert skier on the east coast, but probably an intermediate on the west. I'm looking to get better at everything. As for the "locals," I was actually raised Mormon and have well over 100 relatives who are still members of the church, though my entire family left ages ago. So that shouldn't be a problem, and I actually have a lot of wonderful family members in Utah now, which is part of the draw.
Thanks for all your tips. I've sent a few PMs, and I hope to meet all you Subie folks when I get out there. I'm in an '06 WRX, Cobb Stage 2, with Whiteline sways and endlinks, and Rota grids. So keep an eye out in the coming weeks as it's looking more and more like I'm going to make it to Utah or Colorado. |

I think you would like UT just fine. I would pick it over CO but I'm a bit biased in that regard.

Update: Looks like I start driving to Utah on Feb. 24 or Feb. 27. Heading for Park City for a month or two, then finding a new place to live and getting fully established. See you out there!

If you are coming out for skiing, you will not be dissapointed... Utah has the best skiing in the 48 handsdown!
However, I had a very hard time adjusting to utah living.... To me, the cities give very weird vibes, all the girls are married, air quality is terrible, and nobody seems to care about the environment (which is amazing considering it is one of the most beautiful places in the world). I came out with 3 very good friends, and all 3 of us have moved out of there. I think it is much more difficult for people who lived in other parts of the country to adjust to Utah. |

I just moved out here last month from NY its good so far. housing is much cheaper than ny. If wanna find the most pow id go to Alta, snowbird or brighton. Everyone goes staright to park city it seems like everyone over looks the other side of the range. I got a season pass to brighton its the cheapest and they have great terrian.
If you got a sti id make you sure u got some snow tires too. |

don't worry about adjusting, you will adjust just fine if you start out in park city. it's where the non-mormons go to get away from the mormons lol. rent is probably going to be higher though. but its a nice little area out of the way of things, but still close to everything.
