Default Wild Ass Rumor of the Day: Nissan to “Buy” GM

Quote:
Seems like our old pal Jerry York is back in play. You may remember Mr. York as the turnaround expert, ex-ChryCo exec, rep for aspiring GM owner Kirk “The Lion of Las Vegas” Kerorian and former activist member of GM’s Board of Directors. It’s the penultimate of these which applies here; Captain Kirk’s main man tried to broker a deal between GM and Renault back in the summer of ‘06. The merger fell afoul of then-GM CEO “Red Ink” Rick Wagoner, who’s now shivering in hell (albeit without any financial worries). Our sources tell us that Nissan wants to be GM’s Fiat. In other words, it’s looking for the U.S. government to give it a controlling share in GM for no-money-down, putting Carlos “I told you so” Ghosn at the head of the unencumbered GM. I mean GNR (GM - Nissan - Renault). This one makes a lot of sense. Uncle Sam doesn’t [really] want to run GM, and the Fiat deal will [they hope] provide a template for the GM - Nissan thingie. And, lest we forget, the maxim “everything either grows or dies” applies to both GM and Nissan. Hyundai-Kia just passed Nissan for sixth place in the U.S. new car market

OK, I thought the rumor that I posted about Fiat+Chrysler+Opel was strange... this one is even more so.

It'll never happen, but if by some crazy twist of fate it did it might be neat.

Nissan seems to be one of the only companies willing to invest in building exciting cars.

You are right... Their entire range is actually pretty exciting for the niches they play in...

Handlingwise perhaps....

Mazdas do tend to be a tad underpowered though, you have to admit... They do make up for it though in styling and handling though

Yeah, mazda has a ton of 300+ hp coupes and $80,000 supercar killing engineering marvels.

Mazda has some good products, but Nissan's are a little more exciting.

I got to meet Carlos Ghosn at an economics conference in Detroit a couple of years ago. At that time, he was entertaining ideas to buy/merge with Chrysler. He is a VERY intense guy to talk to. He looks you straight in the eye and speaks directly to you. That being said, he was a very personable person, but I got this feeling that he didn't take **** and that your did not want to be on his bad side.

Expect a 390z that cracks at the headlights going 155 mph.

I think there are definite benefits for both companies here... Nissan hasn't been able to crack the truck market anywhere as well as GM does in it, and I'm sure could learn a lot from GM here.

GM on the other hand isn't all that strong in the small car market, where Nissan does rather well for itself (and part of the reason why Chrysler wanted to merge with Nissan not too long ago), and I am sure that GM could definitely pick up a few tricks there also.

It should be interesting to see what comes of this.

Yeah I think I would take a gtr over a mazdaspeed3. Both of which are the fastest each manufacturer makes.

Too bad. You'd probably have more fun in the MS3. I'd rather daily drive a Mazda5 than a 350Z for a fun time on my commute. The comment was "exciting".. not "fastest lap times".

Now, the 370Z might be a different story.

Better to drive a slower car fast, than a faster car slow and all that eh?

I could not agree more.

Don't get me wrong I like the speed3 and rx8 for that matter but I definitely don't think either is more "exciting" than a gtr or 370z and that's not based just on lap times.

This is not a bash on Mazda but more of a defense for Nissan

ZOMG, THE SKILINE G-TR IS TEH F4ST3ST SLOBBER TWITCH SPRAY TAN JAEGER BOMB!!!!!!!!!

But anyway, this could prove interesting, and definitely beneficial to GM. If GM's small car line-up gets a little Japanese massaging, it can only help.
