Oil Consumption Survey
This past Sunday when I pulled into the driveway the low oil level light came on. Checked it and it was at the bottom of the dipstick. I added some Mobile1 I had in the garage to top it off and when my wife took it to work Monday the light went off. This was with 4200 miles since the last oil change. It took about 2/3 of a quart to bring it close to full. I had my appointment today at the dealership and had it checked over. The service writer had a look on his face when I was telling him what was going on that indicated that he knows of a problem and didn't want to tell me what hoops I have to jump through. After they found nothing wrong he said they will have me do an oil consumption test over the next 6000 miles. I have to take it in every 1500 miles and have them check the level and document the usage. So I guess I won't know anything for another year as we only have 8200 miles on it in 13 months and went on a couple trips.
Anyone else 'participate' in this?

Theres a long thread, which is often derailed, discussing the oil light coming on and oil consumption with these fb engines.
A lot of folks like you dont put many miles on your cars and are just now noticig/realizing whats going on. I too have seen the look when asking about burning oil. Start documenting things. Good luck |

Eighty-one thousand miles? What do you think of the car so far? Any issues beyond routine maintenance? Auto or manual?

Other than using oil , about 1 quart 5000 miles , it's a great car. The cvt helps to get 32 mpg with snows and 34 mpg with all seasons. 2000 rpms seems to be the sweet spot for mpg (about 65 mph)
I drive 1300 miles a week and it still runs like new. If Subaru can solve the oil problem , I will buy another one in a few years. |

Yeah by Subaru standards, a quart in 5000 miles is GREAT!

It would take a lot more than 1q/5Kmi to scare me away from an otherwise great car, and I've burned more than that in my last drain. I just don't see it as more than a minor expense and annoyance.
