Default Where to practice rallycrossing in south/central NJ?

I'm new to this area and I'm looking for areas where I can practice rallyX'ing.

Nothing fancy, just somewhere wide and unpaved (and _legal_) where I can drive an imaginary course. I only know places in NNJ/NYS (where I offroad my XJ's) and I definately can't clear those trails in my Subaru.

Please reply or PM if you know anywhere.. I'm located exit 105 on the GSP. but I'm willing to drive deep into the Pine Barrens. Also I would love to start offroading down here if anyone is interested in going out.

Also curious what locals install on their Imprezas for under carriage protection. I'm getting a rear diff cover, is there anything else I can do? (Not worried about paint chipping)

Thanks in advance..

We used to go to the Pine Barrens all the time. We will be there on the Friday of the 48hrs. Shoot me a PM, as I'd love to do some offroading down there again (I have a few guys who'd take their trucks down as well)

Pai-san, are you dropping by officially or just driving by? I'm not sure if I'll be around or not but it would be cool to say Hi.

And where exactly in Tabernacle? I live less than 30 min from there.

Working on an official visit

Tabernacle is south of Red Lion. I'll have to pull out some maps and take a look exactly. Great place to test out some of those SOA vehicles... hint hint.

Atsion is about 20 miles southeast of Cherry Hill. That's where the ranger station is.

Is your web site borked? I wanted to post a pic from one of the PB meets. I don't think I've been there since my Outback Sport days.

Costin: If you are looking to get familier with your car's handling in the dirt, just go for some extended Pine Barrens drives. PM me if you'd like some route advice, I grew up in south Jersey and have clocked thousands of dirt miles on my car, I can suggest some routes you can take that are not going to beat your car to death.

Wow, 14 posts and no "just do it?!"

You don't practice rally cross, you just go to events and learn. There's no substitute for seat time at actual events.

Messing around in the Pine Barrens isn't _legal_ either. Chances are, if you are going fast enough to have fun, it's breakin' the law. Back in the day we searched extensively for an open area down there for a rally-x but we never found one. We talked to the moto-x track about possibly renting it, but there was no way to configure the course to be safe.

Seriously?

I'm not looking to practice high speed feint drifts on switchback hiking trails or race down fire roads like a madman. I was just looking for locations of unpaved right-of-ways in the area where I can drive on dirt at very low speed. Kitsune understood what I said correctly, I'm "looking to get familier with [my] car's handling in the dirt". And you're saying I can only do that 10 times a year for $50 a pop? Years ago I would have done just that -- in fact I maintained a schedule where I was able to clock over 10k (offroad) miles on my Jeeps all over the tri-state. But now I work 60 hours a week and spend the rest of my time working on my EE degree. My condolences if my response comes off a bit aggressive but your comment was obviously intended to be incendiary.

I was under the impression that if you going fast enough to have fun it's not rallycrossing anymore (more like rally or offroading)? Do you often top out 2nd gear or use 3rd at rallycrossing events??

Take care,

Well the PineBarrens speed limit is about 20 or 25 mph IIRC. So I think the point being that a lot of folks come on here and want to go rallying/rally-xing on public roads.

The PB is probably more suited to off-roading truck style than Subaru style, but come out to the 48hrs if you have time and we'll be hitting up some good areas.

Don't worry, it is meant to be "incendiary" and I say it to anyone and everyone, experienced racer or newb, who posts about "practicing" rally (or rally-x) on public roads. It's just my thing, I won't let a single thread along those lines go by without bringing it up. Stupid behavior in the name of "rally" in the Pine Barrens has gotten roads taken away from legitimate events (the PBX) in the past. You might not be intending on doing anything stupid, but for every person who posts here there are 10 more lurkers reading getting stupid ideas. Don't take it personally.

And yes, I do mean that rally crossers (and stage rally guys) don't get to practice unless they have private land to do it on. It's one of the difficulties of being dedicated to the sport, even at the top levels. I ran two stage rallies this year, one tarmac and one gravel - I had never driven the car at speed when I started the tarmac rally, and I had one "testing" session on gravel (but with the wrong suspension and wrong tires) before the gravel event. I don't get to practice unless I enter an event or get invited to a testing session on private property.

Have you done a rally-x? I can't tell from your post(s). Yes, you normally would be using 1st and 2nd gears, but it still feels fast because the course is tight and twisty. It's a ton of fun and totally worth the cost.

Good luck,

Alex

Well then, what can I say? I wasn't aware I was going to trigger someone's autoresponder with my original post. I was looking for legitimate unpaved routes in South Jersey and thankfully I've found guidance from others. I assure you that I will drive these routes with others' personal safety and property rights as my first priority.

Only mentioned the exclusive usage of lower gears in rallycross to emphasize the low speed. However, no formal rallycross experience here on my end. I will admit to doing most of my offroading legally. I've only dripped motor oil once on State Park property and it was done quickly and quietly.

Take care,
