I buy my Amsoil OE from a local distributor, so I don't pay shipping. It's $6.10/quart.

I would think there would be a local distributor near you in Jersey. Check the Amsoil web site to see.

I believe OE, XL, and Mobil1 are all Group 3 oils, and that only Amsoil Signature is Group 4.

In my opinion, the Signature would only be worth the cost if you could get 15k+ miles out of it. So far I've been using OE with a 5k oil change interval (OCI). I've just sent a sample of OE into Blackstone Labs for an analysis, which will tell me if I can safely stretch OE to a 7.5k OCI.

Someone using Mobil1 would need to send in a sample to see if it provides equivalent or better test data than my OE sample. And someone using Amsoil Signature would also have to show me Blackstone data to prove to me that it's a superior product with a long enough OCI to justify the extra expense.

Thanks for the info, I just checked. Are the distributors just people selling from home? lol

The local distributor info just gives cell, personal email, home address? lol

Yes, the distributor I use is a home-based business. This doesn't bother me one bit. He gets the product I need (he doesn't stock OE 0W20, so I call him a week or so before I plan to do an oil change, and then he orders it and receives it the following week).

I also bought from him the Amsoil Severe Gear product that I used when I changed my tranny/rear diff fluids.

If my Blackstone used oil analysis looks good, I might buy OE 0W20 from him a case at a time (12 quarts) so that I don't need to visit him as frequently. I already have a stash of six of the good black Subaru/Roki oil filters that I bought on eBay....

It is 20/yr to get dealer pricing on the oil. I buy oil for 3 cars and possibly my motorcycle this year too (rotella is so good though I might not). I also do 4 changes per year per vehicle, so I get my money's worth.

i just priced out the amsoil OE online. it only sells by the quart at 4.70 +shipping/tax. if i were to buy 13qts (which is enough for 2 changes, plus 2 extra quarts on hand) it works out to be 5.77 per quart. I can't buy Mobil 1 for that cheap.

XL is 7.00/qt for the same quantity, and Signature is 9.45/qt (if you can get 15K out of it, it is the best overall price)

Here's my Blackstone report:

Looks like I have no worries, which means I'll stick with the Amsoil OE 0W-20, and can increase my OCI a bit.

How many miles on your car? and how much does this cost?

If you look at the report, you'll see that I had 10,924 miles on the car when I drew the sample. I paid $25 for the basic report, plus $10 more to get the TBN reading. The TBN was important because that's what told me I can extend my oil change intervals, which will pay me back for the cost of the Blackstone analysis. But if you use the same oil (and don't drive significantly more aggressively than I do; I'm a fairly conservative driver, I can imagine that hard driving would "use up" the oil's additives at a faster rate), you can know from my data that Amsoil OE 0W-20 is good for at least 6500 miles.

Good choice. Now that I'm confident the Amsoil OE is working well in my engine, I'll probably buy a case the next time I'm getting ready to do an oil change (using a 6500 mile OCI).

I think that is the interval I will use too.

FYI, I sent this email to Blackstone after receiving my report from them:

Hi, and thanks for the quick turn-around on the nice report.

Please provide your opinion about (and the significance of) my:
* High molybdenum
* Low manganese
* High boron
* Low magnesium

Thanks!

Steve

And this was Blackstone's speedy reply:

Steve,

Those elements are mostly additives in the oil. Molybdenum is an anti-wear
additive, manganese is an alloy in some engine parts, boron is anti-wear
additive, and magnesium is a detergent/dispersant additive. None of these
show any problems for your engine or the oil, and their quantities vary,
depending on the oil brand.

We don't necessarily see any difference in having high quantities vs. low
quantities of additives, when comparing wear of an engine. Some engines
require a specific additive, but that is generally relevant to aircraft
engines. In any case, your engine looks good and should work well for you
for a long time.

Thanks for contacting Blackstone!

I share this info not only to provide the info, but also to point out that Blackstone seems to be a very responsive, customer-oriented company. It has been a pleasure doing business with them!

I would run the Amsoil OE to 6,500, then do another UOA. I would like to see were the TBN would be.

Most of the SN rated oils on the market have reduced Calcium, and added Magnesium. The high moly is left over assembly lube. Same with the Silicon.

Good to see your data looks solid, I am running OE myself. At the moment, I am on the 3000, 7500 and then 7500 there after interval. Going with Amsoil XL on the next change at 7500 miles on the clock (5500 at the moment). Figured it was a little more piece of mind over the OE for a 7500 interval.

i didn't like XL, but i changed to it really early so my engine may have still been consuming a bit. Signature is great, but not API certified, so I changed to OE for peace of mine for the next 40,000. then back to Signature

What didnt you like about the XL? Just that it consumed a bit? I wont go with the signature since its not API certified, so its either OE or XL for me. Happy with the OE at this point, 2500 miles on the fill and no consumption.

yes, my consumption with XL was higher than I would have liked. on 8200+ miles with Signature I used .7qt

I will have a UOA coming for the Signature hopefully this week.

I am curious if or when Amsoil will make an oil for the cvt. Has anybody heard anything on that?

Nope, nothing. By the time I change my CVT fluid again, hopefully somebody will have it by the quart or a 2.25 gallon container rather than the 5 gallon bucket Subaru only offers.

I've heard there are 2 or 3 others claiming to be compatible, but they are made for the belt type cvt, not the chain type as in the new Impreza. There must be some specs for it somewhere.

So the longest interval we have seen with anyone who got UOA is just under 5000 miles correct? Anyone have any UOA from a 6000+ interval?
