Honestly when I saw the sales report that said ABS on it, I thought - great. I thought it was fairly normal for a car that new and that size to have ABS. I didn't go making diagnostic checks to make sure that it had abs, just like I didn't hook it cut open the seat to make sure it had side airbags.

My WRX has ABS, but I don't recall it having an ABS light that comes on every time you place the key in the ON position. I guess I could be wrong but I don't think I remember ever seeing it. |

I understand caveat emptor, but having to check for an ABS module seems a bit extreme.

perhaps not but it's there. you should see battery, oil, ABS, check/service engine at the least-- some brands/models show more.

Shipjumper is right. I went to test drive a car that the salesman assured me had ABS. I saw no airbags, and no dash light. I opened the hood to look for the module/lump/whatnot. Nuthin. There was even a big empty space in the fuse box where the fuse should have been. Was this a real Mazda dealer, or a used-car lot? -Brian |

It was a big used car outlet. Its a huge chain, they also have new dealers. By the way- the 6 was for my girlfriend, i sitll have my impreza... I am still a subie man! The 6 drives really nicely, and its got a nice look to it both inside and out. I really like it- however it makes me appreciate my impreza alot more too.

There may be a fog light indicator too on a car with no fog lights. The only way to be 100% sure is to either _test the car_ before buying it to be sure the ABS is there and functional, or look for the ABS sensor(s) at each wheel near the rotor and the associated speed ring that tells the ABS ECU individual wheel speed. - Janq tells everyone when it comes to buying cars, Caveat Emptor |

One other thing...never buy a used car without knowing all there is to know about it and/or enlisting the assistance and expertise of a qualified neutral third party to fully & properly inspect the car, before buying it.
Take the car to a Mazda dealer or certified repair person you trust and have them check it all otu for you. It'll cost you a few dollars but it maybe money well spent preventing disappointment such as what we have here. Further, he would have been able to positively confirm any and all options or features as being present and functional. Live and learn... - Janq doesn't think you have much recourse and the BBB is a joke |

For this situation, I would contact someone to document your purchase date and number of attempts made to return the vehicle. Also, and most importantly, get the car back to them within the 7 day rule. Ask to speak to the General Manager, Sales Manager, or Owner...someone with authority. Trust me..call up there and ask to speak to any, or all, of those people and arrange appointments to talk to them about a "serious issue about the dealership". Be polite but firm and simply ask for your money returned. If they have another car on the lot in the price range ask for an exchange. Good luck! Manny |

I'm not all-knowing when it comes to this stuff (Janq can tell you from my posted experiences) but I would think if both you and the dealership signed a 7-day return policy, it doesn't matter if they won't "let" you return it... do it anyway. Go to the dealership with the car and ask for the General Manager and tell them you want to unwind the deal as the car does not have ABS like you were told it did.....??

And about the 7 day return policy- its a dealership policy posted on their website... but the GM and everyone there insists that its a 7- day exchange policy, even though it says "return" and not "exchange" on their website. In any case I think the fact that the vehicle was misrepresented to us supercedes any additional policy they have- at that point contract law takes precedence. Its as if we were told it was a 2003 but then later realized on our own that it was a 1999- the contract becomes void and one would not have to rely on dealership incentives such as the 7 day rule to make the transaction whole. The problem I think is that if we chose to follow that path, legal action is req'd which is time consuming and potentially expensive. So I think I may be forced to deal on their terms, which is that they are supposedly looking for a comparable car with ABS. If that works and they find one- fine. If not, I will take it up the corporate ladder (since they are a huge huge dealership) and either get money back or at the very least get compensated for the fact that we PAID for ABS but did not receive it. And at the end if I get screwed I'll just file any BBB report I can and tell everyone I know about the dealership, including you all and my fellow nasioc/ mid-A members. |

this is OT, the picture is not NWS and I didn't tell him to die in a fire... its common sense to look in manuals for equipment and to double check what the dealership tells you especially on a used car!!
and if it matters I do know what an ABS pump aka shipjumpers name for it "bump" is. I read!! yay hooked on phonics worked for me! |

Are you on crack? Have you read any part of this thread? I don't even know what to make of what you said, since neither comment makes any sense. Basic equipment? ABS is an option for the mazda 6 in all the years it was in production. I know mostly everything I need to know about the Mazda 6. - I was told that it had the ABS option. Do you know what the word option means? Do you raise points like this in real life too? Look in the manual? Do you think they design individual manuals for every individual car based on what option it has? Now I understand why you are so loved here in OT. |

And darn it, this has nothing to do with how much you know about cars!! Holy Christ this is ridiculous. I realise I should have double checked the dealer on the ABS, and next time I will, but don't tell me I don't know about cars.

Option means that it is NOT ON ALL VEHICLES!! Therefore you should have made sure the equipment was on that particular vehicle.... "This vehicle has ABS? Can you show me where that is here and how it differs from a vehicle without ABS brakes?" Play dumb to the dealership and have them point it out.
Are you going to believe every word of a dealership from now on too? its only normal to double check what you are buying anything that expensive. would you buy a house and trust the real estate agent to tell you that the house was inspected and then buy it without reading over the inspection first? stop using me as a decoy for your lack of knowledge when you purchase a vehicle. |
