Default Need to borrow a bead stretcher!

As the title states, I need to borrow a bead stretcher! I'd even be willing to pay a deposit or rental fee if needed.

I have a bunch of 15" tires left over from my Honda days and I'd like to use them on the 18's that are currently on my wrx. I've been looking all over and no local stores are willing to loan one to me for anything less than $500. (I'm sure its because they just want me to buy tires from them instead of saving all that money by stretching out my old tires so they fit on the new wheels )

I'm sure I could stretch out all the tires in my garage in a day or two so I wouldn't need it for too long! I'd appreciate any leads or anyone who can loan/rent/lend me one!

Huh? There's a machine that will stretch 15" tires and turn them into 18" tires?

I was shocked too. Never heard of such a thing. Google bead stretcher and this thread is about all that came up so who knows.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA seriously????? this must be a joke..... do you even understand how a bead is formed? just cut up the tires and glue them to your new wheel, its the only way you'll use a 15" tire on an 18" wheel.

They're in Walmart right beside the skyhooks and left handed screw drivers.

It's not a special tool.

Just find a shop with a hydraulic (not pneumatic) tire machine. It will have enough strength to stretch the bead during install.

Just remember, you'll have to use a significantly wider rim (a.k.a. "stretched") since your sidewall will effectively be too tall after stretching the bead.

putting a 15", 16", or 17" tire on an 18" wheel is not possible with any type of machine. The steel bead wire does not stretch

aren't those on the shelf below the boost fluid ... and we know how important that stuff is. Did you know many cars even have gauges to monitor the level of boost fluid.

man, I'm getting so many conflicting posts from you guys that I don't know what to think...

would it be easier/more logical to stretch the tires less - like making a 17 stretch to 18"? I have a bunch of 15's sitting in the garage and I just can't see trashing them.

Wantsti - can you send me a picture of the stretcher you have? Manual or hydraulic? I'd prefer not to sweat since I'd be paying so much to use it, but I'm pretty sure I'll make my money's worth either way!

Luke, you seem pretty smart, and you work for a tire company, do you guys rent out bead stretchers or could I send my old tires in and have them stretched? I've looked all over and can't find anyone who will loan/rent/etc their stretcher for anything short of 500 bucks!

I know you guys heat cycle tires, do you have a stretcher?

NO, I'm pretty sure I understood what he was saying, but I don't think it pertains to my tires, I don't see any steel in them at all???

Would it be on the side of the tire that is facing towards the car and I can't see it?

leftbrand,
First, please look up how a tire is made, and what goes into them. You'll find that steel wire, mesh, woven patterns are pretty common in all consumer tires. Ever heard the term radial tire? Or belted tire? Oh and the bead usually has a steel cord in it too.

Then knowing that steel doesnt stretch, let alone when it's been woven into a pattern in many cases, do you really think that such a thing is possible?

The answer is no. There is no possible way said tool exists, no way a tire can stretch over to a larger wheel. The best you can hope for is a mod to lock this thread.

Let me be perfectly clear, you cannot stretch a tire to mount on a different size wheel.

The steel is inside the tire. They are bands of steel inside the tread. It is not possible. The tire is not just made of rubber. There is many layers of nylon inside the tire as well. These do not stretch.

I hope this clears it up for you.
