Default When someone posts a question, should you answer it?

Not always.
Sometimes.

For some reason over the past 2 weeks I have seen a HUGE increase of people answering posts with just horribly incorrect info. Not all horribly wrong info, some just wrong. Either way....

I have ended up being a bit of a dick in a few of these situations, and I apologize (a little anyway ), simply because its getting old real fast. There have always been a few responses with bad info here and there, but as of about the last 2 weeks (this week has been really bad), it has just gone out of control. Almost every thread has people just dishing out bad info as fact. If it continues on this path we are a month away from people actually believing that a BOV and CAI are a great way to make power.

Here is the thing, when someone asks a question, they need the correct answer, and in some cases, the answer they get could lead them to either fix a problem, or create a MAJOR problem with a failure.

I am not asking people to not respond at all, who the hell am I to ask that?

What I am asking is that, in the interest of keeping good, up to date info out there for all to benefit from is this.

When someone asks a question, if you do not KNOW, beyond a shadow of doubt, that you have the CORRECT answer, please dont answer, or if you arent 100% sure, then somehow indicate that your info MAY not be dead on. The wrong answer you give, may end up costing someone time/money/effort. Or it may just spread more bad info, which isnt a good thing either.

A reply that is a guess, is FINE!!! By all means do it. But for the love of god, EXPLAIN THAT ITS A GUESS!

Honestly guys, please dont take this wrong, this isnt me trying to be a dick, this is me trying to help keep good info out there for all to benefit from. There are two types of people that come into the Newbie forum.
1. Those who need an answer
2. Those who want to help.

If you are giving out bad info, you arent helping. I know we all want to help people out, and we all have something to say (lord knows we all know that about me ) but please, for the good of all, make sure you are giving out good info M'kay?

Thanks for your time, flame away. I am sure somehow this post makes me an a-hole

Current list of offenders (started 11/08/06) more to come as we see it. If you see it happening, let me know and link the post and I will add their name. Maybe if we call these people out on it, and make them known, this garbage will slow or even better stop.

And what's up with criticizing someone's member #? How about a nice welcome to the new members instead of bashing our noobness. No, I don't know a lot about my new Subaru....THAT'S WHY I JOINED THE SITE!!!!

But yeah, agreed.

and if you are going to answer in a post that already has some answers . . .
READ them first.
I know sometimes it takes a while to finish a reply as the boss walks by your cube and you have to pretend you're not on nasioc, and during this brief interruption, someone else types the same exact thing you did, only 2 minutes before.
fine, no harm. but the people who have to say the same thing that was in post #11, THREE days ago . . . what's the point ?
also, for the love of god, try to read what the OP says before trying to answer the question.
I know some posts are excruciating to labor thru the spelling, grammar, run on sentences and lack of puctuation, but some of the answers I read might as well be about clouds they are so far from what was being asked.
I am a noob here, and have only had my car for 15 months, so I do my best to sit quietly and only respond to the few things I have actual experience with. it's really not that hard.

AMEN davenow

seriously, is it that hard for some people to just shut up? Back up your answers with some proof/data/facts. 'My brother's tuner's girlfriend's dog said...' doesnt count.

theMatt, the member # based flaming is (should be) reserved for noobs answering noobs with misinformation. if someone flames you for your number under any other circumstance, make fun of their mother or something.

Daver, I seem to end up in the same threads as you, correcting the ignorant.
You are the man, and don't let it bother you that some crybabies can't take the blunt truth (I know you don't!)

good post but i know for a fact that you should turn the nut to the left to tighten it. I know because my uncle's ex-mechanic told this one guy that.

seriously though, this needs stickied. this needs to be part of a list of faqs that should be mandatory reads before being allowed to post.

thanks dave.

I support this thread as even myself have been a victum of believing what "others" have said and posted it as gosphel a time or two. Someone once posted what Davenow said to me and I've taken it onboard. So if I know, I post. If I don't know, I don't post. If I'm unsure and do post, I post I'm unsure as a disclaimer.

I think flamming has a purpose.(though I don't participate) Makes folks think twice before posting a question that's already out there 10 other times.
