Default Vanpool Trunk rd p&r to South Anchorage

I just got off the phone with share-a-ride and I guess there isn't a vanpool that travels to the South Anchorage Diamond and C area

I am thinking of starting a vanpool then. Departing from the Trunk Rd p&r around 7:00am and departing Anchorage around 4:00-5:00pm. I am off work at 4, but can hang around town a little longer.

http://www.muni.org/Departments/tran...s/default.aspx

There is some good information. Figure we're all car folks. I would just need 8 people to get the van pool started.

If everyone in the group is fine with it I can probably detour a bit off the route, but typically just picking up C off of the Glenn then down to Int'l, then Arctic to Arctic and Raspberry.

Send me a Pm if you're interested.

Rob

I'd get in on this since I live off of Fairview BUT I have to be at work by 7:30 and I'll be TDY until July. I've been wondering about the rideshare thing but I'm so used to having my car at all times.

TDY I'm assuming you're military? There are other vanpools that maybe better suited. 7:30 start time is

I'll see how my schedule goes. Right now I stay in in the evenings. BUT, I typically work 8:20ish to 5:30ish. (mainly because I like to hit the snooze)

Not really worth it at $130/month IMO. I only spend about that on fuel a month driving to work (Elmendorf) and back 5-6 days a week, provided I'm not driving the truck or Jeep everyday.

How many people work a set shift each and everyday too? Some days I might work 10-12 hours while other days it's only 5 or 6. Some weeks I end up working all 3 shifts or some variation of such.

I'm not sure what your situation is but to be spending only $130 to drive from Palmer to Elmendorf 5 days a week for $130, you'd have to be getting about 75 mpg. You could of course be sharing the cost with others too though.

Here is my situation for comparison. Based on 1 person in 1 vehicle driving 100 miles roundtrip 5 days a week or 21 days a month on average at 23 mpg, the cost is: Monthly $460.97 or Yearly $5531.61. I'm burning super unleaded at about $4.46/gal.

Riding in a vanpool, I save about $330/month. Now, tack on that your employer has a program that pays that $130/month, and mine does, you pay nothing except the cost of getting to and from the pickup/drop-off. You could be saving a lot of cash. For me, that equates to $4.00/day or $84/month. So in the end, I am pocketing about $380/mth. That's like having a car and insurance payment for free.

On top of all that, you have to factor in maintenance, wear/tear, tires and such. At that rate of driving, that is an oil change about every 6 weeks or about 8-9 oil changes a year.

You just have to discipline yourself into working a fixed schedule and forego overtime. It is nice to let someone else do the driving too. You can nap all the way into Anchorage and back or use that time to get stuff done too.

$130 a month is a helluva good deal. I spend a min of $300/month on gas.

greenspeed- they might be adjusting our summer hours so if I get back and your vanpool is up and running I might try it out, no guarantees though.

5 days a week for a month to and back is about 1400 miles for me (just over 35 miles each way) That is about 32 gals of fuel or right around $130. (car averages 45mpg).

I never did figure out why the WRX platform gets horrible fuel economy for pretty much an econobox with a 4 banger motor. I was able to get 23-24mpg out of mine and that was it. If I drive normal in my Elise I can get in the low 30s, and it runs fine on 87 octane too.

Since a person has to drive to the van's parking lot, in my case to Trunk that would still be ~14 miles a day or a cost of about $25 month, so it would cost me $155 a month to ride in a van.

Reason I am saying anything is someone messaged me saying I should get on this van run.

If the boss man is paying for it, little bit different, but I'd ask if he could just give me the $130/month.
What do you have that gets 45mpg? a TDI VW?

I am and unfortunately our van is over filled. We have a full roster of full-time riders and we also have about 4-5 standby riders. I can double-check though.

We are all on a 0700-1530 schedule. The problem you might run into with us is all of our riders work at and within 1/2 mile of the airport. How will you get back and forth from your job? I know these folks will not deviate from their route which doesn't go near Int'l and Arctic. We come into and leave the airport environment via Northern Lights Blvd./Pt. Woronzoff/FedEx.
