URGENT! how do you remove the cam shaft sensor with the valve cover in the way? do you need to take of the valve cover on the drivers side to replace it?

I had a nissan 240 that had similar symptoms. Turned out to be the cat. It was clogged or something. Not really sure how to check that without pulling the cat or how much work that is.

Looks like I've been beaten to it already, but definitely try Seafoam, put about 2/3 of the can in your gas tank, and try pouring about 1/3 of the can directly into your throttle body very slowly with the motor running, then turn it off, and start it back up about 5 minutes later. I just did this on my car, cleared a knock sensor CEL, and pretty much cured my cold start ticking. The idle is a lot more consistent now, and doesn't drop quite as quickly, best 10 dollars you can spend!!

I see you changed the cam sensor, what about the crank? In my car the crank was the worst condition of the 2. It was covered in corrosion.

Yes, crank sensor was replaced before the cam sensor.
The car isn't driving any better (though it does have its good days).
I also don't think it's the head gasket since there is no smoke coming from the exhaust
and no coolant in under the oil cap.
Bringing her to a shop today... I just need to decide which one...

Oh, and thanks for those .pdf's rabbitnutz, they came in handy with the cam sensor.

I think I am going to bring my car here today unless I discover any Subaru specific shops closer to me within the next few hours. Let's just hope it can make the drive...

Right on. One of our '97 OBW's had the hesitation and SeaFoam nearly eliminated it. Just be prepared for the cloud of smoke.

Bet this car has 120K+ miles on it. I used to run a bottle of Techron through it a couple times a year.

Is there a CEL for anything?

Have you removed the plugs to have a look at them?

NP. have you tried seafoam yet? i'm starting to think it might also be a stuck PCV or Idle Air valve.

Read the OP before posting. No CEL's and the plugs were the first thing replaced.

haven't done the seafoam yet. I was gonna do that today before I brought it to the shop. For a stuck PCV or Idle Air Control Valve would I just replace them or would I clean them? I know for my old Maxima I had to clean the PCV not replace it.

I read the OP. There's no mention of it. Why don't you read your own OP.

I was more interested in what the plugs looked like not if they were replaced.

I'd keep helping you but you certainly don't appreciate my time. Later.

I have taken it to the shop 3 times in 2 weeks and shelled out way too much money

Things that have been replaced so far:
  • Spark plugs
  • Spark plug wires
  • Coil pack
  • Fuel filter
  • Crankshaft position sensor
  • Camshaft position sensor
  • (put injector cleaner in; need to do some more driving with this tank of fuel)
