The Uncle is right afterall...

...but has everyone noticed that a conversation with the Uncle is like a conversation between Alec Baldwin and the paparazza?

I haven't done anything unsafe in making my car lighter.

Personally on my street car, I'd first focus on weight reductions like:

Lighter battery

Lighter rotors

Lighter driveshaft

Then as the parts become available, replacing steel parts with aluminum or carbon fiber...but I wouldn't sweat the small weight savings like lug nuts for instance.

Super duper. Not everyone in this thread is building a STREET CAR. I drive my car to meets, shows and races. That's it. It's not a daily driver. Just because it's not useful for your STREET CAR it doesn't mean that it's not useful. Quite frankly if all you're going to do is throw in a lighter battery, this thread isn't for you. This thread is for people who are serious about weight reduction, so if you're not, go **** post all over some other thread.

Agreed.

I think it's awesome to have people posting up the weight of every small thing. Yeah some go a bit crazy with things but good for them.

i figure that i have taken somewhere around(im NOT l00py d00p and weigh everything to the bleeding gram like some here do ) 125 pounds off the front of the car now, i guess...maybe a lil more

and that seems to be the key to the gd chassis......taking the weight off the front is magic for the way it drives....too bloody marvelous

now for the #3 li battery and a rear bumper beam and a few other goodies and it should be about done

i know this feel mate:

AC is gone - 9kg
bumper beam is gone - 12kg
subframe is gone - 10kg
battery is gone - 9kg
whole exhaust replaced with nice light stainless steel one - say 15kg.
valve covers are gone - 1kg
steel hood replaced with CF - 7kg
one rad fan gone - 1kg
all sound deadening off the firewall - 2kg

66kg/145lbs or so. even just driving out of the driveway with the new exhaust was an immediately, largely noticeable difference. let alone everything else.

Most cars have a second radiator fan just for the Air Conditioning.

I have been modding cars since about 1977.....and weight reduction is key in performance and always has been

simplify and add lightness......somebody famous in motor sports said that once

I started lightening my 02 wrx in 01 ...when did you start, again????

anyway.....I have been watching this thread since day 1...and my comments stand

people are doing some REALLY stupid things to cars to lighten them...and people are WAY obsessing about it.....

grams.... my bloody bleeding ass

Damn, 12 years and all you've done is a lighter battery? Are you on a racing team? Team 3 Toed Sloth?

You might not think grams matter, but my numbers speak for themselves. Now, if only I had the driving skills to match my car... :/

my next mod is going to be a carbon fiber driveshaft. Just read a few reviews from fellow members and it seems like an amazing modification! Serious weight reduction that even translates to more power at the wheels...tough to beat that

I have the ACPT CF driveshaft.
It's very effective, with the WRX even more because it's a longer unit.

The ACPT CF DS was one of the first mods I did on my 07 STi (Cobb stage 2 at the time) and it was pretty difficult to notice.

I remember reading all the IWSTI postings about the ACPT, because there were only few postings on NASIOC.
I would say of the Sti owners in that thread, probably 80% were happy and thought this was noticeable. Some were unhappy due to vibration, which ACPT fixed right away, by giving those owners replacement driveshafts.
Several guys documented improved gas mileage.

In my case, there were even fewer guys that paid for a CF DS for a WRX, because these owners focus on the 6 speed upgrade.

I thought that the CF would not only help with reducing mechanical losses, but also protect the 5 speed to a small extent.
I am putting through the 5 speed currently 340 ftlb to the ground, out of my EJ207, for 2 years currently..
Like I said, the 5 speed driveshaft is longer and heavier and therefore provides for a slightly more pronounced change.

i like that the cf absorbs most of the shock on hard launches as well as the other benefits
