The Helmet Thread
There was a thread like this a while back, and it was pretty cool. A lot of nice looking helmets.
I'll start it off, nothing special; KBC Force RR Dark, all Snell and DOT ratings up to requirements. GoPro Motorsports Hero Wide Camera. If anything, its a nice place to be able to put all of my stickers! I removed the visor because the clip on the right side broke. You get what you pay for. Otherwise, a very nice helmet.

My Second Helmet - used for autocrossing from 1995-2002
This was my first custom-painted helmet, my first karting helmet was done in vinyl. First Roadrace helmet: 1998-2006 This one did duty in Formula Ford and a bunch of other stuff.. if you look close you can see the sandblasting on the front from the open-cockpit cars. The (retired as of three weeks ago) autocross/instructing helmet: 2006-May 15, 2009 - shown during painting. My first helmet not to wear out or age out.. May it rest in peace - it served me well and did it's duty when the time came. The Current Roadrace Helmet: (2002-present) The $$$ one.. I try not to use it too much to save wear and tear on the $900 helmet.. hence the reason for a second double-duty helmet. Jon K (now needing to get a new autocross/karting/instructing helmet...) |

The helmet I won at the DC Region banquet last year. It's a Bell M4 Flat Black
And the helmet I actually autocross in, not a huge fan of the closed face during the summer months. This is a G-Force 750 helmet I believe, bought it about 4 years ago I think. Best picture I have at the moment, nothing fancy. |

a good hosting site that work on most DOD computers is www.imageshack.com its a bit tricky to get it up without their twitter banner but you upload it on the first page it shows you a thumbnail of it. click the thumbnail and copy the text from the first "forum" box. Delete the second image and you have a Add free Image |

Those Bells fit weird. I tried a Medium or a Large(I'm thinking Large) and it fit snug, while I had to have an XL for the Arai I tried. Does anybody know if Zamps have the same kind of fit as the Bells?

I put on a Zamp the other day, but it was a large and was too big for sure. I am hoping the vendor brings a medium Zamp this weekend, as I will probably buy it from him. Zamp RZ2 - $249 so pretty good for a Hans-drilled full face that isn't super heavy. I might just get the Pyrotech full face "PYR 5408" - This is the Bell off-brand from what I understand, and having tried them on I know they fit the same. $248 - no Hans holes, but might fit better than the Zamp. I have a Sparco SN2000 model carbon-mix helmet with HANS anchors (SA2000), an open-face Bell (SA2000) for autocross/instructing, and a Pyrotect full face (SA2005). All fit differently and are all different sizes, but are used for different things. I find myself using the Sparco for karting and the Pyrotect for track days, and the open-face for everything else. I can always swap the HANS anchors to the Pyrotect helmet if I need to.
Zamps are nice, they are inexpensive but have good construction and are pretty light and have a good model range. lighter than the Pyrotect or Bell M2 model full face units. Probably the same weight as a G-Force full face, but I have never been impressed with their build quality nor fit. |

See.. I do like the weight, and having the kevlar Bell Dominator has kind of spoiled me with lightweight helmets.. when I pick up my first HJC karting helmet I wodner if someone filled it with lead. I do worry about fit, as I haven't tried one on, and I also worry about build quality. With even my lest expensive Bell I could take the liner out, wash it, put it back in and it held together. To me that's worth some extra money after a full day instructing/driving. Jon |

I want to say that the Zamps have a similar fit to a Sparco, Bieffe (the old ones), and HJC....tighter in the cheeks and not as "round" on the crown of the head like the old Bells. Medium should be fine for you IMO.

Zamps do not fit like most HJC. There is a brand new HJC that they had at PRI that was a similar fit to the Bell/Zamp helmets. They talked about maintaining the two different head shapes for their helmets (a rarity in the SA world).

Here is my helmet which was painted by my friend Gary at www.creationsnchrome.com. He is the same guy who painted 05cgm's pictured above.
First he laid down a chrome base, yes this is paint. (That's him in the reflection.) Next came the candy red color coat. The helmet takes on a red chrome efffect due the the chrome base coat. Then came the graphics. The logo is from Bayside which is my favorite band. I e-mailed him a .jpg of the image, he then cut it on vinyl and used them as a stencil. The logos were then airbrushed. Here is a finished pic. and an action shot. |

I bought the cheapest Snell 2005 helmet I could find. People can't see me in the car when I have the tints and windows up anyway.
