Question Legacy gearing?

Is the gearing (final drive) the same for all 5 speed Legacys, or are GTs, LSis, or any others geared differently, lower, taller, etc? Same with the rear diffs, anyone know?

Good question! I know the GT manual is a 3.9:1, the RS is 4.1:1, the wrx will be the 3.9:1, and the automatics (all, I think) are 4.4:1. Those are all final drive #'s, however, it seems like someone told me the GT gearbox was unique.

svx was 3.55

my '95 LSi has 4.11
90-94 5spd AWD had 4.11
I think 90-91 FWD auto had 3.70:1

The GT with the LSD rear has a different final drive ratio than that of the L. From all that I have read the actual 4EAT tranny is the same for all Soobs. Including the lil' Imprezas.
Good Luck

I thought GT wagons had 4.11 with 5spd and 4.44 with the auto. L wagons 3.9 with 5spd and 4.11 with the auto?

There are at least two 4eat transmissions. They have different 1st and 2nd gear ratios.

If I may obfuscate things a little more…

My wagon came with 24.1" diameter tires (195/60-15) while the GT has 24.9" tires (205/55-16).

That does what - make the 3.9 more like a 4.0?

the auto has .67:1 overdrive ratio.
the stick is something like .78:1.

That is why there is a 4.11 in the stick and 4.44 in the auto.

I could have sworn that the 2.5GT had the same gear ratios as the 2.5RS - 4.11:1 for the stick and 4.44:1 for the auto. Based on performance numbers I've seen (and the numbers I ran with my '99) I think this is the case. A 2.5GT wouldn't be so close to the 2.5RS in the 1/4 mile if the GT had 3.90 gears. Unfortunately my Haynes manual, which covers 90-98 Legacy and Outback models, doesn't list any vehicle specs.

Those are the ratios I've seen at edmunds and in car and drive type magazines and owner's manuals.

I' am going for a swap from 95 Legacy L wagon with the 2.2 and would like to know what the final gear ratio is for it. I'am going to place that transmission in my 92 SVX, I believe it had a 3.70 (some say 3.55) but would like to have some idea of whats going into my SVX.
Thanks for your help.
Be safe and drive safe.

http://www.Cars101.com doesn't list SVX gear ratios, although if you search the SVX archives here you should be able to determine the final Drive ratio in both the transaxle and the rear differential.

It appears that the earlier (92 & 93) SVX's had top speeds in the 155 MPH range, while the later models topped out around 135 MPH, suggesting that at some point the Final Drive ratio was altered to give more lively acceleration capabilities.

Is your '95 Legacy L wagon a 5-speed manual change gear box or a 4-Speed Electronically controlled Automatic Transmission ("4EAT") ?

Clearly you will have to swap the rear differential ring and pinion along with the transaxle in your SVX.

Not that it's totally related to the thread, but just out of curiousity I took a peek in my 2002 FSM and it lists Brighton and L models at 3.9; GT and Outback are 4.11

Its a 4eat transmission, out of a 95 Legacy L wagon, I will check cars101 but if you find out please post to me.
Thanks for you help and time.
