Do you have anything from Subaru to corroborate this claim? Because you used the owners manual explanation as I did on a 3/20/2012 post on IWSTI regarding 10W-30 and 40. Was the update recent? Like in the last 15 days????

I only ask because I bought my '11 STi (I'm 30, since we are all throwing out the age card) in May 2011 and the manual states what I have noted previously...So I would think I would have received something from Subaru indicating this fact you have alluded too. However, I have not seen or heard anything to date. In addition, I just inquired of three dealerships (as noted above) last month when I did my oil change regarding the use of 5W-40 and they said it was fine as long as the oil meets the AG/SM requirements (which T6 does).

If you would have installed forged pistons then I am sure they would have been installed correctly at that time and this failure would have never happened.

If his issue was from the factory then those cylinder walls were already damaged from the first start up at the factory and during shipping (driving car on and off shipping trunks/boats) or even test drives. So he would have torn down the motor thinking he was going to ONLY have to put in new pistons to only find this additional issue/costs which now requires a new short-block (i.e. - more costs out of his pocket when realistically the new short block would have been covered under the factory warranty).

Quick and easy breakdown for those who don't like to logically think for more than 5 seconds:

Forged Pistons at Purchase and cost to owner:
CP Pistons w/ Rods - $900 (estimate cost to prove point, not recommending these pistons)
New Short-Block - $2,000 (again just estimate to prove point, don't quote me on this amount)
Total from owner at sale: Cost of Sti ($40K, rounding) + $900 + $2000 = 42,900

Stick with OP and don't touch a thing:
Cost of STi ($40K)
Total from owner: $40K, everything else was covered by the warranty.

Just to make clear that is a $2,900 difference and that doesn't include installation cost if you choose not to do the work yourself. $2,900 is a mortgage payment, bills, snowboard trip to coloardo, etc...

OP I think you made a good decision. People are too impatient and can't wait for the warranty to end, and those are the same people telling us individuals that keep a stock tune to by another car if we don't plan on tuning right off the lot or they have popped numerous motors and now think they know everything. Retarded, because that is the opinion of a handful of people on here with no mechancial or R&D facts to back up the claim except A/F charts of a few cars.

I again allude to my wikapedia reference - If I had to complete my master of chemcial engineer thesis referencing Wikapedia (equivilent to NASIOC, just a little better maybe), I would be laughed out of MIT. Therefore taking everything on NASIOC as gold is not a good idea as most information is based on personal or a friends exprience, and anyone can post whatever the **** they want, no matter how wrong it is. Don't get me wrong, NASIOC is a great starting point, but I wouldn't swear by it.

For example - "Can I remove the turbo on my STi? Sorry for the stupid question, but I really want a n/a STi that will rev to 11K, but the problem is that Subaru doesn't sell one yet. Need Advice." - WTF?!?!?!

Of course, had ANY other problem from the factory build been an issue . I wouldn't have a warranty after making any changes to the pistons or tune.

I agree with you but it makes you think if you do this or that would you be preventing anything in the long run.

It doesnt really make sense to do anything before something actually goes wrong?

The manual even states that the use of 5W-40 (what T6 is) is ok, especially for high temp areas, agressive driving, etc... In addition, I have asked three dealerships and all agreed that you don't have to run Subaru oil or 5W-30 for that matter. Just make sure whatever you are using is within the manuals guidelines. Personally, I use T6 with a Subaru OEM filter - I have 23K on my stock 2011 STi and she runs like a champ! No hesistion issues, no burnt oil...now just waiting for warranty to run out *knock on wood*

More people need to actually read the manual instead of making assumptions.

I have been working in automotive service for 17 years. I don't like to fix things until they break. Much of the advice on here I don't agree with. BUT I appreciate very much. The idea of losing a warranty with the dice roll that mods make it better, no thanks. Hopefully the failure shows up in the pictures that I take at the dealer Friday. I deal with new broken cars every day. I understand that any auto manufacturer is at the mercy of the parts vendors quality when assembling mass production cars. So maybe Im a jaded prick. I have never said a harsh word about Subaru until now. Im afraid this won't be the last major issue I will have. And this forums, "mod it fix ".. sorry guys I bought a STI because I thought Subaru would do a better job building it than I would. MY 3RD new Subie in a row , and the most expensive. And to date the most broken.

I have a 2011 although modified with a HTA68 Turbo and stage-2+ since 2000 miles I agree. Just because the government stipulates emissions, what about all the other cars that have to meet these emissions standards? Hyundai for example 274 hp 4-cyclinders etc. My dad has the GDI turbo sonata and I hate to say it, but I should have bought the damn turbo sonata. They have to meet the same emissions standards and could be had with a 6spd manual. I have been on forums and have not seen modified Genesis coupes blowing motors!

Could the wrist pin retainers not have been installed properly? If those were adrift that could gouge the cylinder wall. A very strange slip up if so.

You can't get the Sonata 2.0T (274bhp) in manual, but you can get the Genesis Coupe 2.0T (274bhp) in manual. EJ-series motors are an old design so they're not going to meet emissions standards as easily as these new motors. Also, direction injection (like the Sonata 2.0T) engines have their problems too; like carbon buildup and fuel pump failures.

The harsh reality. I don't know if I'll ever buy another turbo subaru ever again because of all the mess. It's a shame because I loved my STi and regret not just biting the bullet and throwing down for a built engine.

2012 u can get the option 6spd in the Sonata. I just looked at my dads paperwork, he got the 6 spd auto and agree with you, but I have not seen blown Genesis motors that have mods. Thats the point I was trying to make, I love my car still after $10K in a new motor/clutch/meth/coilovers, but didnt think It would have went at 11K, had the oportunity to get a vey lightly used 2011 EVO GSR while waiting on my11 WRX (after my 2010 fail) and maybe thinking I should have done it.

isnt it odd that you dont have to retune a stock evo to keep it from blowing up... or a zo6, or a camry...

there is obviously a serious tuning issue since 2007 with the sti. Subaru needs to offer a reflash that fixes these issues... end of story. You should not have to purchase any tuning software, aftermarket pistons, etc in order to keep the engine from blowing up. To say that you need to have funds available just in case is ridiculous. STICK TOGETHER instead of bickering back and forth on nasioc and lets get some traction going for a recall or free reflash.

That being said, since i picked up my 07 sti used, the first thing I did to it was an accessport and stage 1... i had a stage 1 program on the car within 3 days of ownership. No more lean spots.

Also, I dont know if everyone can feel this, but usually, you can feel when the car pulls timing. When you feel that, back out.

Another issue I feel may not be helping is it appears some gas companies are running higher blends of unleaded gas with ethanol. I've had the best success using shell. On my ms6 i would see knock running anything but shell gas.

You Sir are ****ing awesome! , some people aren't very pleased at my disdain toward the Subaru brand in regard to this issue. And I always stick up for Subaru whenever I can. But this factory tune just doesn't cut it for most. I have spent some time around high end euro crap too. Sure the air ride would act up in my Bro's Porsche Cayenne Turbo, or maybe a rear main seal in his C55 AMG . BUT THE PISTONS NEVER MELTED in either car ! , Not only has Subaru made the STI look worse with every redesign, it has its ass handed to it by EVO 10 's all day long ( which really pisses me off ) and to make it better , you might have to replace the engine internals and pay baby Jesus to flash the ECU with a map that won't cause problems. I would be willing to even pay Subaru to flash this thing if they would stay behind the warranty. If I wanted to throw money away that I would never see a return on and be stuck with a car no one would want to buy , I would buy a white trash Ferrari ( mustang, camaro, red civic )... we have all seen the Modded out STI for sale on ebay it brings **** money because most of the time thats what its worth. The factory map wasn't my problem THIS TIME .. but I drive like a old lady. Because honestly I don't think this car can take a beating. And after this Im afraid to find out...

I am getting a compression/leakdown test next week to see if there is any internal damage yet.

If everything looks good then I am probably going to get it tuned ASAP.

Do you have a Tactrix? It'd be interesting to see a map_compare and see if they actually changed the map or just reset/disabled the CEL.

No but I was planning to stop by COBB to have it checked out. I had them check out my original map over the summer to make sure they were able to tune it. Only thing I would really be able to tell a difference is if the CA ID has changed.

The EJ-series engines started in 1989; they're a very old design at this point. It takes these horrific lean tunes for them to be able to pass the strict emissions standards we have today. This is why Subaru needs to do away with the EJ engines; it's sad to say, but everyone will benefit from a more efficient design.

Right, it's available with a 6-speed auto; in your original post, you said "you can get the new Sonata 2.0T with a 6-speed manual", which you cannot.
