You'll need to disassemble it to extract the CDs. If you're very careful, and meticulously remember (write down, or take pictures of) where each screw and piece goes, then you'll be able to reassemble it, and it might work. From others' experiences, odds are slim.

You'll have better luck getting more specific answers by searching on LegacyGT.com and SubaruOutback.org

Also, will a factory head unit from an '07 WRX work in my OBW w/no issues?
The 14-pin power/speaker harness will be plug-and-play.

If your Outback has the OEM subwoofer that is a plain speaker in the rear cargo area (not the under-seat type), then the sub won't work with the WRX HU. A 2007 HU from a Forester that had the rear cargo sub would work (though it may require some modification or an adapter for the 8-pin harness that has those wires).

Correct (although some subwoofers won't require the Y adapter -- you can feed the mono signal into just the sub's left input jack).

does pin 23 hook up to the blue/white wire on the 10 pin kenwood subwoofer which would normally go to the the accessory line.
Yes. The Navi HU's pin 23 is its amp turn-on output. It will activate an aftermarket amp. On that particular Kenwood subwoofer, you'll connect the Navi's pin 23 to the sub's Blue/White "P.CONT" (power control input) wire.

I can put together an RCA jack and a separate turn-on wire with the appropriate pins that you can snap into the empty slots on your car's 24-pin harness. Contact me via e-mail me for details.

2011 wrx:

Does anyone notice that the scrolling song/show information that shows up while on an FM station skips words? i.e. if i'm listening to "The Sports Junkies" on 106.7 "the fan" it will show up as "The - Junkies - 106.7 - Fan" each on a separate readout. Is there any way to fix this?

Also, according to the manual the "ST" logo displays when it has an FM signal locked in...but from my experience it only displays some of the time and only on certain channels, yet I do not notice any difference in clarity/signal if it's on or off. Can anyone explain this further? (technically or otherwise).

Thanks

Since I'm uncertain if the subwoofer I'm looking at will operate with just the left input engaged, would it be best to go ahead and hook both inputs up?

Also, might just having the left input hooked up diminish the signal strength and resulting sound output?

It all depends on the sub. Some of the Boss subs do need a Y adapter.

I would try it without first. Or get the Y adapter from a place where you can easily return it if you don't need it. Definitely run a single RCA cable to the sub, and install your Y adapter at the sub if you need it.

Yeah, pick up a y-adaptor from Radio Shack. They'll let you return anything.

I tried searching for every occurrence of "2011" in this thread but couldn't find an answer... It seems like a few things have changed on the 2011 Premium (non-nav) HU in terms of connections and/or pinouts, but does anybody have any data on what has (or hasn't) changed internally? Is the actual SQ or power or features in any way different from 2008-2010? When I very briefly listened to a 2011 at the dealer (using USB input) I was surprised at how good it sounded compared to what I was expecting based on all the "the stock HU in these cars is complete crap" comments on the forums. So did the SQ actually improve for 2011 or do I just have really bad ears/taste?

The 2011 Subaru-branded OEM Navi HU does have a mono subwoofer output (like the 2008-2010 Navi). You can add an RCA jack to the 24-pin harness to connect to that (see previous posts).

Some Canadian 2011 models ("Sport-tech" and some Limited Edition) have a Pioneer AVIC-U310BT as the "factory" HU. That has RCA jacks on the back which can be configured as subwoofer outputs.

The 2011 Impreza base HU (non-Navi) and premium HU (with built-in Bluetooth and USB) do not have a subwoofer output. To hook up a sub, you'll need to tap the front or rear main speaker outputs. Run those into a Line Output Converter (LOC), to reduce the levels to line-level. Some subs/amps essentially have a LOC built-in -- they have inputs that you can connect directly to speaker-level (high-level) signals.

The cleanest way to tap the HU's speaker outputs is to use a pair of 20-pin forward/reverse harnesses. You'll connect the wires from the two harnesses together (so that they resemble a short extension cord for your OEM HU). In the middle, you'll also connect one pair of speaker outputs to your LOC.

There are also combined harnesses available (with most or all of the wires already connected straight through between the two plugs). See links on my homepage.

The 2011 premium HU in Foresters may have a mono subwoofer output, similar to the Navi HU. The circuit board inside has pins labeled for that, but I haven't heard from anybody who has tested it.

The 20-pin power/speaker harness is mostly the same as 2008-2010, with the addition of one new pin (#13) for the steering wheel controls.

The aux harness changed to 16-pins, and includes 4 pins for the BT microphone. In Foresters, the aux connector may also have pins for a subwoofer output. See this thread.

Even when we get the service manual (to see the schematics), that's going to be difficult for anyone other than an experienced audio EE to say.

Hey guys, still on my car audio learning curve.......

Can anyone tell me if you lose any important settings, when you disconnect the negative battery cable to do a subwoofer power line install?

Might the stereo and Navi reset functions and maybe I'd have to do the seatbelt chime fix again? Would anything of importance be lost that I'd have to reset or that the dealer would have to deal with?

The 2011 factory radio (and 2008-2010, too) are 8" wide. That is 1" wider than the opening in your 2005's dash. Your 2005's factory radio is standard double-DIN (4" x 7"). You would need to make a major modification to your dash opening to allow the 2011 radio to fit.

I also don't recommend trying to install a 2011 wheel with airbag in a 2005 -- the airbag may not be compatible.

So is "mostly the same" close enough that a Metra or the harnesses you sell will work? In other words, was that pin 13 previously wired on the harnesses even though it wasn't in use?

As far as I know, pin 13 is actually the only difference on the 20-pin harness between 2011 and 2008-2010.

The Metra and other harnesses will work for basic audio functions for an aftermarket HU (power, illumination, power antenna, speakers), but none of those harnesses include any SWC wires. I build mine with either 2 or 3 SWC wires (depending on model and year to be installed in).

Does the stock 08+ navi has a "sat" icon? I'm trying to install an ipod interface (iSimple Gateway), but I couldn't get it to work because when I press the "Audio/Sat" button, nothing happens, it just take me to the "Audio Mode" screen and there is no icon for the sat.

I should. Do you have the Sat hooked up? You should have the option for Sat, AM, FM, aux.

No, I don't have a sat hooked up. The options on my navi screen are fm, am, disc, aux/video, no sat icon.

If you do not have something hooked up it will not show as a option. When I setup my BT phone setup I found this out.

That's weird. I assumed the navi is not accepting the ipod module?

Well my car originally came with the 6cd changer radio and replaced it with the stock navi. I tried the ipod module with the original radio and it works fine.

ok SVXdc... i have been reading through your threads and searching all over this forum for some kind of definate answer but keep getting LOST and CONFUSED etc.... I know this question may be online somewhere but im pullin my hair out. On the 2011 impreza WITH NAVI HU, i am wanting to install an amp and sub out of an old car. I bought a LOC and planned on doing it that way. I havent had time to take out the HU. Got some questions.----

1. If i use the LOC, is it best to do it behind the HU or closer to rear speakers??

2. I have searched for a pinout with color code for wires for the 2011 w/navi hu and have no luck. I hear the wiring and whole setup may possibly be different from the 08-10 models. Do you know if it is the same or not? Do you have access to this info so i know which wires i got back there?

3. I have also heard there may possibly be a sub and remote amp wire back there already? you know if this is true? Can you give me your honest opinion on the best way to go about installing my amp and sub.

I would love to get my hands on a good diagram on the wires that go into the back of the 2011 impreza navi hu!!!!

If you can help i would be so greatfull!!!!!!
Thanks in advance!
