Default Rumor: Can KiA take on the Subaru BRZ/FRS

http://www.leftlanenews.com/kia-deve...wo-seater.html

Quote:
Kia has confirmed that it has started working on a sporty two-seater that will fight in the same arena as the Scion FR-S (known as the Toyota GT86 outside of the United States), the Subaru BRZ and the next installment of the Mazda Miata.

The yet-unnamed car is still at the embryonic stage of development so official details are scarce, but Kia design chief Tom Kearns told England's What Car? magazine that the two-seater will be affordable and rear-wheel drive, two attributes that have helped the FR-S/BRZ twins earn accolades from the media and car shoppers all around the world.

The coupe might be powered by an evolution of the direct-injected gasoline-burning GDi four-cylinder engine that is found in the cee'd GT and pro_cee'd GT. It will likely make over 200 horsepower and 200 lb-ft. of torque and be available with either a manual or an automatic transmission.

Kia hopes that the addition of a coupe will enable it to give its image a boost in Europe and in the United States by drawing a younger clientele into showrooms.

At least three years away from its public debut, Kia's FR-S-fighter will likely be previewed by a thinly-veiled concept over the coming year.
I don't really have faith in KiA's ability to create a true competitor. I'm still hoping that Nissan brings us a true competitor called Silvia. Hell have the stones to call it Silvia, and not 240sx.

Did Kia leave the Honda S2000 out on purpose or not know Honda is trying to bring it back?

Hyundai/Kia need a lot of the help in the chassis tuning department. I'm not sure they'll pull this off.

This might help Hyundai to build test facility at Nürburgring

Though I don't have high hopes for anything more than a modified Genesis coupe.

New S2000 would be close to $40k, not been close to FRS/BRZ territory.

I'm pretty sure price isn't a barrier when comparing this segment since it's tiny to begin with and buyers will cross shop them eventually regardless of the price difference. Most of all it isn't even out yet so stop pulling that number out from your ( )o( ).

Seems the segment they are going for is RWD and affordable, not RWD and who cares how much it costs

Take a guess what the S2000 sold for in its last year on sale? Better yet, look it up yourself. S2000 is not an affordable fun car.

Right, because no one would EVER cross shop a Miata with an S2000 given the "price" you're hell bent on it having when it comes back. No one could ever afford both even back when the S2000 was still made. Affordable depends on your income but you know you're definitely welcome to assume $40k isn't "affordable" from where you stand. Oh right, you like pulling things from your ass since it's a blast from the past and history HAS to repeat itself. So obviously a vehicle that was made several years ago only to be brought back in the future WILL absolutely cost around THE SAME as it did when it was still being manufactured in the past. Of course, because that's what worked the last time it was on the market so Honda, being a genius, will bring it back and keep the MSRP around the same ball park because that's the smart thing to do.

This story: X car company will make a car to compete with Y car. It will have either a manual or automatic transmission. It will make horsepower and torque. It will have four wheels. etc. etc.

What are you talking about? This segment is ALL about price. "How much performance (perceived or otherwise) do I get for my dollar?" is the question the buyers of this segment have in mind.

Agreed... no idea why anyone would think this isn't the case.

If they do release a newer s2k following the same model, with a hand built engine and drop top, yeah, it will be at or above $40k.

If they compete in the same rwd coupe market as the BRZ/FRS (not convertible, not hand built engine) they'll make something completely boring that will be mediocre in every aspect. That is, if every car they released for the last 10 years is any guide at all.

You do realize there are still many hand-assembled engines today, right?

Or, they can do it right and help break that stigma, much like what Toyota and Subaru just did.

As I said many times, nothing but good things for the segment if the BRZ/FT86 did well.

A new dawn rises.

Honda needs to build a simple, 2-seat, mid-engine car using a Civic Si motor if they want in on this segment.

If Kia comes out with something the engine will be great but the chassis and gearbox will be crap. The Genesis Coupe could be such a great car if not for a couple of really bad shortcomings, this won't be any different unfortunately.

I wouldn't count them out yet. The Korean car manufacturers are improving their products at a faster rate than the Japanese did when they started selling cars in the US. IMO, Kia has a better chance of building a RWD car that can take on the BRZ/FRS and MX-5 than say, Nissan or Honda or any US-branded auto manufacturer in the near future.

Improving quality, reliability etc. is one this. Getting a car to feel right is something else. Most Japanese car makers still don't do it well.

Nissan has experience with the 370z and Honda had the S2000, so I see no reason to doubt their abilities. Both with long motorsports reputations. Ever seen a Kia win a major race?

Ever see a good looking Kia/Hyundai before the last few years? Me neither.

Let's see what they do before we count them out.
