05 STi ATP3071 Tuned by Tim Bailey
Tim Bailey from Surgeline Tuning was in town this past weekend to tune a few cars. Since there haven't been too many ATP3071's tuned out there, I figured I'd share the results. The car belongs to 05cgm and he is a serious track junkie so the maps were intentionally left ultra conservative. They are road racing maps, not dyno glory maps. Tim and I were both pretty impressed with the ATP3071 turbo. It spools like a 20g but makes about 15-20 more whp/wtq.
Here is what I recall of the mods on the car: 05 STi stock motor ATP3071R stock location bolt-on turbo IWG APS turbo inlet pipe TGV deletes PE850 injectors Cusco headers Catted turboback Ebay FMIC Perrin big MAF Cobb AP2 91 octane street map and 100 octane road racing map:

looks good to me. Power isn't falling off by redline. something that always sticks out like a sore thumb to me on these engines.

Nice results. This is about the same power I saw on this turbo on a car I recently tuned.
This car has the ATP GT3071 bolt-on turbo, Catless helix downpipe with a very quiet catback, AEM CAI, 3" inlet, XO TMIC, Deatschwerks 740cc injectors, MBC, Cobb AP with EQ Tuning custom tune. Here is the chart: My road dyno software reads approximately 15% lower than a Dynojet, so the numbers are very close after conversion. The tune was done on California 91 Octane at about 20.5psi peak, tapering to about 19.5psi by redline. My personal take on this turbo is that it makes about the dame power as a 20G on 91 Octane but it provides significantly better spool and overall transient response. Overall the car feels very similar to the VF39 in terms of response above 4k RPM, but makes about 30whp more and pulls nicely all the way to redline. This is a great upgrade for auto-x or anyone looking to retain as much response as possible but still get a significant gain up top. Thanks -- Ed |

The ATP bolt-on Garrett turbos aren't cheap but they do what they are supposed to do and represent a good option for those willing to pony up a couple more bucks over the more common MHI based bolt-on turbos. |

Thats about right. I have tuned a few. Not impressed. I get 20G power and spool. It might have better response which is nice but its not worth the extra cost in my opinion. The 3076 is alot better. It comes a tad later than the 20G but makes alot more top end.
Good tune! Clark |

THe Real GT35R rotated setup with GT housings will make 400whp on pump 93 no problem. Its been dont time and time again. No bolt on is going to do that including the 71 and 76s. ITs a compromise to have a small turbine and inlet. Even so they have a place in the market. This car made great power for what it has and the tune looks solid!

I like the ATP units a lot.
The 3076 is a really great unit but there is some skill to get the inlet hose sorted right. At the end of the day the rotated mount Gt35 is the best option, however, for those seeking a factory location I feel the ATP 3076 is one of the best options. On a '08 WRX we did recently on alchy and pump it was making over 400 TQ and broke the trans at a very moderate boost level. I would suggest the 3071 for someone who is doing auto cross of who hates turbo lag. We like these units a lot and highly recomend them. Al |

I personally prefer the ATP3076 as well but I am more tolerant of lag. The customer who has the ATP3071 is a circuit racer and asked for a turbo with close to stock responsiveness, so we recommended the ATP3071.
As for 400whp on pump gas, I believe that ATP has some kind of chart showing 400whp allegedly on pump gas and frankly anyone who has any familiarity with Subaru motors and Garrett turbos will quickly realizes that 400whp on a pump gas 3071 is never going to happen. I think the results are perfectly within the range of reasonable expectation and that the balance of spool, boost recovery and overall power are excellent. |

This ATP3071 doesn't look like it spools much quicker (or at all) compared with the ATP3076 you tuned (same dyno) a week ago. I know the cars are different, as this one had Cusco headers and a catted turboback. Any thoughts on just how much difference there is in spool between the 3071 and 3076? Because the 3076 put down some serious numbers, and it makes 300 lb-ft @3700:

Compared to the DomIII i would have gone a diff route. Turbo seems to spool late. DOM III FTW

I did a couple runs with the 3076 equipped 07 STi in 3rd gear and it spooled about 500 rpm slower and frankly 3rd gear in the 07 tranny is only a touch shorter than 4th gear in the 04-06 trannies. Hence why I say the 3071 it spools about 400 rpm faster than the 3076. On the street the difference in spool up is pretty obvious between the two turbos. |

I'm seriously looking at the ATP3076 and TMIC for an '08 STI. My target is 400 whp w/o meth on 93 pump gas, and 300 by 4k rpm. If I can't do this, I'll look at something like a twinscroll setup. In either case, I'd be willing to swap out pistons to tolerate a bit more boost. Frank |

The 3076 I tuned had an APS FMIC, and my personal preference with turbos in this size class is for an FMIC, but I do live and tune in a warmer climate. A good TMIC like the Spearco could work for you. Stay tuned though, we'll be getting the first ATP3582R (bolt-on GT35R) sometime this week and it should be installed and tuned shortly thereafter on our shop 08 STi. |
