V5 Impreza on 2.5GT Legacy??
Hi all,
If I remember right, we can use the same KYB AGX parts on both Impreza and Legacy. And now, can I use the same V5 struts on Legacy (on sale from vendor forum) then. Or I better get the KYB GR-2 if I can find a better price locally. More suspension question: can I use the FHI 20mm rear sway bar for Impreza on my Legacy? Thanks in advance. etam 97 2.5GT

You should check with Subie Gal on this one.
The reason you can use the AGX on a Legacy is because it's adjustable. I don't think any of the non-adjustable ones would work since the Legacy and the Impreza require different rates. Bob |

I think the V5 dampers are kick ass b/c of the inverted design, but they'll probably overdamp most springs, that's why the AGX are nice b/c you can adjust them.

Yeah, but I think the rates for Legacy springs would be slightly higher, due to the increased weight of the car, so they might not be quite as overdamped as on an Impreza. I'm gonna put those on when I have a chance.
I'm pretty sure the Impreza bars don't work on Legacy's, though. |

The suspension isnt designed for the legacy.. yes it will bolt up (depending on MY)
But the spring rates and dampening will be out. The springs and struts should be matched..you do have a "range" available when chosing springs for a damper.. but if you go out of this range you have problems... This is why people get away with different springs with the same dampener, but everso often someone goes to far.. and gets bad results. If possible, get adjustable struts.. and play around with springs... I have full ride height.... rebound.. and dampening adjustable struts on my subie.. and a variety of spring rates from 225 upto 450 lbs to play with... J. |

Well, I told etam I would let him know, but I installed the STi Version 5 dampers on my MY99 2.5GT last night. I am using them with H&R springs. They bolt up perfect, and since they are factory, they even have the mounts on the fronts for the attached sensors.
Results? Awesome so far. Doesn't seem as stiff as my brothers 98 2.5RS with Eibach/V5 setup, but since my Legacy is a few pounds heavier, this would make sense. I will post more on the results after I do more driving (only went on a 20 mile scamper last night after the install). Kev www.lagging.com |

Yes they will fit in, but the rear will be slightly shorter than stock and the rates will be way off:
STi BD/BG Legacy Bilstein struts are valved: (the ones that go for ~$1600) F 190/80, R 125/60 STi V5 Impreza struts are valved: F 310/150, R 210/105 |

Force: SWEET! That is exactly the setup that I will soon be putting on my 97 2.5GT Sedan.
I'd rather have a not-quite ideal setup for less than $500 (springs and struts) than perfectly tuned struts (no matching springs, which are the EXPENSIVE STi ones) that go for $1600. Give us some updates when you get a chance! |

Thanks all for the reply. In the original message, I should ask if I can use the V5 struts (only) and the Legacy spring combo on my car. Sounds like Force[FED] give me a good answer.
Force, are you selling the AGX then? Just wonder if AGX/Eibach is a better combo than the AGX/H&R. Thanks, etam |

just fyi,
as has been discussed elsewhere the struts going from Troncalli are not STi (otw they'd be going for over $1000 with a ST__ part number) but regular FHI v5 WRX struts . not the same thing, and the valving if anything would be softer than STi. also, the Impreza sway bar won't work on the Legacy. (sigh) OK, so don't call them STi dampers. I just call them what everyone else calls them. I am talking about the RED FHI dampers, the ones that 95% are using. They are very few people using the pink STi dampers that are ONLY aftermarket, and don't come factory on ANY car.
Back to the topic tho. OK, rates this, rates that. Anyone that thinks these dampers are going to overdamp the Legacy has obviously not driven the setup. I bought these things because the factory struts were UNDERDAMPED for the H&R springs I was using. I didn't want the AGX's because many have already proven that they don't work well on lowered cars. The AGX design is actually slightly TALLER than the factory struts, and therefore are out of their range when the car is lowered. The FHI dampers are better at the shorter stroke...hence my decision. Anyone in the south Jersey area that needs a ride for some convincing that the FHI/H&R combo is damn sweet, mail me. Kev |
