Default Leaky head gaskets or not...

Hey, I've been having problems with my RS overheating, or at least getting hot and me turning it off before it gets too hot, and I figured it was the head gaskets leaking, since it's a notorious problem with the 98 2.5L. I took it to Stephen Jory Subaru and had them check it out, and they say yea, it's the head gaskets. The weird thing is, the engine temp will go down to normal if I turn on the A/C. So I can run my car as hard as I want w/o worrying about it overheating if the A/C is on. Anyone know why this happens? Maybe it's not the head gaskets but a sensor somewhere. Let me know if you know anything. Thanks,

Mike

I had a problem like this on my old car, but that was a Chrysler... The issue seemed to be that the fans weren't switching on when they should have. Turning on the A/C seems to have triggered something in the electrical system to automatically switch the fans on. I don't know if that's how cars are designed... do they just assume that if the A/C is on, the radiator fans need to be as well?

You can use a Napa Block tester to confirm if you have a BHG. It's real easy to use, and only takes about 15 minutes. If you want, you can come to my place and use mine. I think I know where it is in the garage...

what kind of tester is it? The dealership used this blue liquid and sucked radiator fumes through it to see if it would change yellow. it changed to green and only when the car was pushed really hard.

I also checked the fans when it was running hot, the fans work fine. also replaced the thermostat. if it was the water pump i think overheating would happen all of the time. it only happens after long trips or if i really push the car.

Yep, that's the tester i'm referring to. If the liquid only turned green and then reverted to blue afterwards, you're not getting exhaust leaking into the coolant. A real failure, and the liquid will turn bright, bright yellow.

it didn't revert to blue..well i didn't look at it afterwards so I actually don't know, but i'd rather make sure I'm having leaking head gaskets before paying to get them changed. I might just wait until I have enough money to do a swap, save some money.

I had a MkIII Supra that I was perpetually convinced had a BHG... until it actually did. I used that block tester several times and witnessed all sorts of interesting shades of blue, green, blue/green, green/blue, etc. When the head gasket really blew, I tested it again. After a little while running and a few stabs at the throttle, that fluid turned an unmistakable bright, bright yellow (no blue or green at all).
