No stock equipment in the sale. Why do you need to swap those poly bushings? Shouldn't most of that stuff be good for a long time?

Yes the bushings "should" be good for a long time. However, whitetiger auto-x's like a fiend, so you don't know how worn they are. ( this is why i didnt go for the 5mt w/ LSD) The poly bushings/bumpsteer//caster kit really isn't a ton of money(in the grand modding-scheme) to buy new. The lca's are already off the car so replacing all of those pieces is cake.

Not only will the blue beast make an appearance tonight, but Abby and I are coming along, too! Someone take a damn picture. It'll probably never happen again.

man, i was gonna post this in Toms' thread, but i lost the heart, i no longer care enough about randos. lets keep PGH together!
but i typed all this ****, so i'm posting it here so the locals i care about can at least read what i'm thinking. ------- really, 321? how did that even come up in a thread by a guy on a budget, self funding and building a car he drives on track 2~5 hours a month for 5 months out of the year? 321 header has no place there. and guys making headers, they do full thermal airflow analysis of their products. yeah i'm sure Burns do that on every collector they make. even the highest end headers you can buy off the shelf, are not designed like that. they're designed to put these tubes of this diameter and length, with those packaging constraints, to that collector. sometimes, it's limited to what tubes are available, like FR sch10 bend constraints.. maybe some of you have seen them, maybe some of you have built them, maybe even some of you have done testing on them, but all of you are missing the point that.. even if he could afford 4-5k for 321 or hell, why not inconel header and DP, what does that gain him? 3-5x the life at temperature? so it lasts him 5000hrs instead of 1200? he's putting on tops 25hrs a year on the header at temp! TOPS! i'm sure you could calculate the precipitation rate of the 304 and find out when it's going to fail, and the benefits of blah blah blah blah. but really, i think it's all just rhetoric being rehashed, and not one of you is actually paying attention to what's going on outside your discourse. as evidenced by exhibit A: the lack of a proper response from this picture: this picture is very misleading. it's is either a well timed pic of the engine blowing up, or more likely, not representative of the actual scene. either way it should rate at least passing commentary in the discussion of the effects and evidence of temperature related issues of a header. mainly because you can't get steels to those colors with the temperatures available from a running gas engine. so, for all the experts arguing details, what sort of details DO you pay attention to? |

Jason, please don't trust the white balance on what is probably a cell phone picture on the internet. Also, since when have you started arguing for the practical point versus the theoretical/idealistic?

Not only that but the shape of the subaru header (U shaped in a sense) lends itself well to thermal expansion. Did I run an FEA on it? No but no header under a couple thousand dollars has ever seen any form computer modeling. |

cmon, my father always raised me to be practical application over theoretical ideal. it's something i've been trying to get into you for ever. i love optimization but there are limits.
the only computer modeling even $20k headers get is diameter and length based modeling. and i DO flow modelling, i know how to translate from theoretical to actual application. the flow from the combustion chamber and valve end is so chaotic, that you can't accurately model its exact effects. the best you can do is take normalized flow and temperature data, and be close enough. and you don't need anything more than diameter and length to do that. sure bends matter, but on the exhaust, even ricardo wave doesn't model what radial alignment the 120 deg bend has vs the next 45 deg bend, which incidentally does do for the intake. FWIW, in a subaru upturned UP/header situation i think the bellows joints are weak spots and double slips should be used there instead. but then you can't run super high PR on the compressor, blah blah. jesse, sorry, your mom took all my wood last night. |

http://www.smex.net.au/reference/steelcolours.htm FWIW, Tom says he has seen his EGT gauge peg 2000F before. That's in the 'bright to light yellow' category. I think that is well within the auto white balance errors of most cell phone cameras coupled with horrid JPEG compression... Want more proof of things appearing white when they aren't? Here's a Diesel with 'white hot' exhaust pipes... OMG, that is unpossible. How can a steel pipe get so hot as to 'appear' white via a ****ty camera? Last edited by MRF582; 09-06-2012 at 11:31 AM. |

rhetorical question. but one that doesn't apply. dyno pic isn't a ****ty camera, it's a staged shot.
cmon shek, you missed my point. my point is that all those dudes are experts. but they dont even mention the elephant that someone posted into the room. look at the cosworth dyno vid. that's the color it should be for a properly running engine, it's a bit too dull and i'd say running on alchohol. but something is clearly non-representative of what the pic was taken of, and nobody said a fukkin thing about it. cause theyr'e NOT experts. so Tom, 2kF EGT huh? k, how long did that engine last? you can get crazy EGTs if you just retard your ignition and/or advance your exh cam timing. i did give the option it's in the process of blowing up. real high EGTs burn valves and don't make good power and it doesnt' take that long cause they have to transport that gas. he's also switching to 85% ethanol which has even lower EGTs. which is regardless. i was calling out the 321SStards. they piss me off pretty much everywhere. and 321 does crack, WILL crack. just has more longevity. an amount that's unnecessary and doesn't justify any extra costs. like yeah, i know this plastic 30c bic pen works, BUT IT COULD BE MADE OUT OF CARBON FIBER to reduce the flex and weight, and the inks could be nano-filtered the ball tip could be nano machined to have a golfball higher ink transfer coefficient and less friction, the fukkin thing COULD be made to a standard that is unsupported by it's use. as a reasonable human, i dont want a $50k pen, i'll go step it up and buy a $1 uniball that feels and writes better. a 200$ parker uses a replacable 5$ writing cartridge, so you can even make an expensive pen analogy if you want. done. that 3x and successive 5x cost increase practicality translates pretty poorly to thousands and thousands of dollars on something that isn't that consequential. on the cost benefit curve of toms car, 321 is a dud of the highest order. |

Though, I do like your pen analogy. You certainly are no stranger to exaggeration. 321 is almost exactly twice as expensive as 304. Not the 10 times or 100 times or whatever your analogy said. Though strangely enough, you do recommend getting a pen that is 3 times more expensive than a 30c Bic pen... Why? Both are just as good at doing what they are supposed to; communicate written words to others. So why get something 'outlandishly' expensive like a Uniball when a Bic pen is a fraction of the cost?
