Default Why do they always put the chips on the TOP row of the vending machine?

Chips are fragile by nature. Therefore, why would you give them the greatest chance of failure by placing them such that they have the greatest distance to gain momentum before they smack the bottom of the machine? Put the Snickers on the top row. Put the damn gum on the top row. Neither will sustain any damage in the tumble to the bottom. It's simple physics!

My physics disagrees with your physics.

They have the least mass and the most aerodynamic drag of any item in the machine and are therefore best suited for the longest fall.

no to mention the air in the bag to cushion the chips from outside disturbances

Everytime the guy comes back to fill the machine, he chuckles at the number of people who ate broken chips since the last time he refilled.

yeah. gum is so dense that by the time it reachs the bottom of the machine it is traveling close to the speed of light. everybody knows that.

Even better than chips on a top row (which isn't that bad IMO). We had a big drink vending machine at work, one with the see through fronts. The top row had ALL of the glass bottles, everything below was plastic. WTF, why??

There was nothing but these thin plastic tabs they had to go through before they hit the bottom. The drinks dropped with such force they 'traded paint' with the machine, and would have black scuff marks on them when you pulled them out.

yeah, then they would need to make the snack catch bin out of carbon fiber because it is hard to damage.

eh that won't help the chips falling, as the chips are still touching the bottom of the bag upon impact. Or if they do rise, they still slam into the ground after the bag has landed.

reminds me of this...I like vending machines, cause snacks are better when the fall. If I buy a candy bar in a store often times I will drop it, to release its maximum flavor potential.- Mitch Hedberg

My empirical data (i.e., broken chips) trumps your physics.

How do you know that chips weren't broken before they were put in the machine.
