All you guys bitching about scanning a unit....
You are not professional. Scan it. Go to PepBoys and get a generic scanner for 35 bucks. Tell them the code. If they want to know how to fix it, that's when you tell them they can have it fixed by setting a appointment up with your repair facility. Even if they want to fix it themselves. Let them. They will probably botch up the job anyway and be back. They won't come back if you are being snotty about a simple plug in and read job. (you act like you are reading and writing binary) And if you are scanning and then just hanging parts, you aren't diagnosing anything are you? You are just guessing from minimal info. And YOU are the reason mechanics get a bad rap, because you are a amateur and are stealing from the customer. Just because you own a set of tools, don't make you a mechanic. I don't care how much you paid for your scanner. |

I clear and check codes with my IPhone. I got a goLink cable and it works great.

Hell, most parts stores will scan the code for free. I always laugh when dealerships charge $115/One tech hour to scan a CEL. |

We are not a dealership and the shop owns that scanner. We the techs do not do the free scanning because we have more money worthy jobs to do. Nice post wcjug! Kia timing belts are crap and don't seem to last very long. Last edited by Jdub.csu; 08-24-2012 at 02:27 PM. |

Do you the tech own that scanner, or does it belong to the dealership?

We've all been there at least once.
I had to rescue my buddy from chicfila like 4 days ago, did the same thing, ran out of gas on a test drive. I think he did it on purpose to get a longer lunch ~Evil |

Customers always bring their cars in for diagnosis with less than a quarter tank of gas, but every time their fuel pump goes out, its filled to the brim. I hate it when people drop off their car with the gas light on. Then they get bent out of shape when you tack a $20 charge on the bill for gas...

Not a mechanic and not in a shop, but I do see cars on the roads that make me wonder if they know something is wrong with their car or they just don't care.
I was on the highway and saw a younger woman driving on what seemed like completely blown struts in the front. As she hit expansion joints and other bumps on the road the front end would bounce in the air (tires still touching pavement) and they never settled. She was just constantly bouncing up and down the highway. As she went past me, her face was completely content. I was dumbfounded. |
