I'd have to go with driving. My dad bought a Tundra in 06 and traded it in for the STi in 08 with 100k miles. He then went 100k miles in 3 years with that STi before I got it in 2011.

Why would you keep your Subaru when you could trade for this?

how old are you?

seriously, how many 20somethings can fork out $25k for a car w/o mommy and daddy's money? *that's my first thought*

say your life changes, girlfriend/wife/husband/kids get laid off and get a lower paying job... again, i've seen seen this on all other walks of life as well.

guns, computers, game consoles, tools, boats, HOMES - yes, even homes... happened to one of my friends... he became "house poor" after a divorce. he luckily sold it off but had to give his soon-to-be ex half of the money, and his brand spanking new Honda Accord was the only thing we walked away with. at the time, also a $29k (ish) car. well, he also had about $20k in debt form legal fees, moving expenses and you get the picture.

he barley popped the cherry on his brand spanking new ride (paid cash) and sold it at huge loss.

he went from having a 2500 sq ft, 2 car garage, newly built house to living in a room. he ended up moving back up north to his parents because he was so depressed. i honestly thought he was going to eat a Glock at one point or another.

look at other car forums, Muscle Cars, SUV's, Trucks... same thing.

as pointed out before, a 2011 is not "new"... i've had my 2012 since August. it's "new to me" but i've seen 2012's for sale on here with 30k miles, unmolested... people's priorities change.

Airborne huh? you in the military? or hoping to join. living in the Barracks and having no responsibilities outside of a car payment and cell phone bill is not like being out here. (dual-military couples are just as guilty too). steady check + multiple tours = SWEET RIDE. until reality sets in the flat bed comes for it.

that was a normal occurrence when I was active duty. PFC's and SPC's driving $40k trucks. then, reality sets in.

There are times when (cars especially) aren't all they're cracked up to be. You dream of how fun your *insert enthusiast car* will be while WOT, or in the twisties, or how fast it is according to automotive publications and youtube videos, but living with it is a whole different experience. Sometimes you get sick of a rough buzzy ride, clutching in traffic and abysmal gas mileage. Plus the upkeep, the payments, keeping it clean and in good shape, worrying about parking, etc.

Living with any given car is totally different than how "awesome" it was when you test drove one, or how great the handing was when car and driver pulled .94 g on the skid pad. That's my two cents. Plus a fast turbo four car is usually dreadfully slow out of boost, like it is 90% of the time, but it's still a noisy rough riding car those times.

Frankly, I think quite a few people buy these cars based on "tested" performance figures. In that respect, they do represent a tremendous performance bargain. However, real world performance and performance car shortcomings aren't something most individuals take into account.

ETA: i bought a GoPro Hero2 in September. just sold it a couple weeks ago on Ebay.

why? i never used it. i'd used it 3 or 4 times trying to set it up, got the WiFi Backpack and remote so i could use the app. still didn't like it. I tried to like it, but i just found it to be a huge PITA with piss poor battery life.

sold! i wanted to focus on my DSLR skills and getting a thunderbolt display so i sold a bunch of other crap i had laying out too. Monitors, Video Cards, PC, Games, misc. crap all to soften the blow. -but that's me, i hate clutter and when i want something, i'll buy it. if i stop using something or stop liking it, i sell it. it's that simple.

-all at a loss, but not that bad since i keep all the boxes / hardware... so i got back $500 and some change to soften the blow of $1k display.

This. People should wait until they can put a decent down payment down.

You've gotta define decent though. Say you buy a limited and put down about $10k, you're still financing $20k which is going to be $358 per month at Subarus 2.9%. But $10k is probably higher than what most would consider to be a decent down payment.

People gets influenced by different factors around them which makes them think that they have to follow the next best thing out there in the market. As long as something new feature comes up with the next model people will go for that just to claim that they have the latest and most upgraded cars that's around in that particular year.

I had my 2010 STi for 2.5 years. Just recently sold it as it wasn't $485/month fun anymore. Bought a 10 year old truck and now enjoy no car payments.

$500 a month on a WRX is insane to me though.
I make in the upper $30k/year and my car payment is indeed $500/month but I'm not struggling. I'm not loaded obviously but I'm not hurting. I do work a **** load of overtime though. I have a good job that's not going anywhere and this is the car I have always wanted and I got it.I just graduated college and got a full-time job, this was my reward to myself and I'm making it work. And I do not plan trading it in any time soon.

I'm not saying everyone is, and by your profile it looks like you have a fairly safe job. So that's awesome!

Wifey's car grenaded and she's too short to reach the pedals of the WRX (4'11"). Plus, we're probably moving to New Zealand soon so it was just time to let it go. A lot of 2011 were bought in 2010 (mine was) so it's not THAT soon. I put 24k miles on mine in a little over two years of owning it. It ended up costing me $8k to have that car for the time I did. Expensive? Yes. Worth it? Yes. I certainly could have done worse.

I understand, I was just defending my stance and reasoning for making a $500/month payment. Lol. A little crazy? Absolutely, but its the car I've always wanted short of the Audi R8 V10. Doubt I could swing that payment on a public servants salary. Haha.

Me and a coworker were joking about how as a young kid, it's VERY easy to become sucked into cars without actually knowing what you're getting yourself into. I remember when I was around 10ish years old, and my uncle took me for a ride in his '38 chevy with a 383 stroker. From that moment onward, I couldn't be away from the computer looking up cars. I was 12/13 playing with an r/c car and a neighbor pulled up in a brand new at the time evo ix. He took me for a ride and launched it. Almost five years later, I bought an '04 STi.

At first, it's hard not to become attached to the car. I was 17 when I bought it, and coming from old pile of crap DSM, the STi was leaps and bounds ahead of that car in every way. 300 dollars a month? No problem, I can swing that. The car has been on craigslist 3 times since I bought it, and each time I took it down I knew I should have stuck it out and let it sell. The next time it goes on, it's only going on the nasioc classifieds (forget craigslist, they don't care if it has a built motor, most are ignorant to the ringland issues) and somebody on here is going to get one sweet STi for 16k.

To the OP, I have to agree with what everybody else on here says. Dealerships make it too easy to get into a loan that you know you can't afford. For example, when I was buying my sv650, they couldn't get me approved for a 2k loan and 1000 down, but they could get me approved for a brand new 8k yamaha fz6 with 0 down. The tactics that they tried to use to get me on a brand new bike made me shake my head, and it's easy to understand why people (myself included) get into it way over their head.

I've gone through 3 new cars in the last 3 years. Sold my 2008 EVO X in 2011 and bought a 2012 Mustang GT which I sold late last year and picked up a 2013 STI sedan.

Liked the EVO X MR for the two years I owned it but I took a spin in a 2011 Mustang GT w/Track Pack and was blown away and made the impulsive buy. Wasn't too big of a deal as I came out nearly even with the EVO as resale up here was crazy good.

As much as I liked the Mustang I had to get rid of it after 18 months of ownership as mine was a lemon. Unfortunately I learned the hard way Fords don't have great resale and the fact that every Ford dealership has 6-10 used Mustangs on the lot makes it even worse.

Hopefully I can stick with the STI for a while and so far I am quite happy outside of the fact the car is pretty slow stock and the interior rattles are driving me crazy so I will be dynamatting in the spring.
