PCV Valve....lol. You know it's not working right if something is loose in it so you could even check the old one to see if it was even broken. We replaced ours but only because we had the CEL come on, but it's for a minor Evap leak that my friend ducktaped. He's eventually going to replace all the hoses instead of getting a smoke test. He used to be a mechanic. I don't think that PCV valve replacement is going to do anything...but I hope it deducts that reasons to get even more fixed.

I guess Subaru had noticed there was a slight problem...and by slight I mean major, and they have decided to do something. It's not much, but it's a start. They have replaced my PCV valve and are continuing to monitor the situation. They said if it comes on again to come back and they will go from there. Maybe there is hope? Not too sure. As of now, they have tried the cheapest possible fix, and if it doesn't correct the problem, then I hope they will progress to the next possible solution.
How is your situation looking right now?

**I have driven 1620km now and the oil light hasn't turned on yet, maybe there is hope in this minor fix?
I'm in the same situation, mines burning more and more. I'm now burning a quart in 2000 mile or even less.
After a bunch of reading on a forester site, I'm starting to suspect the valve stems/seals. That would set off a chain reaction leading to exponential oil loss.

It's worth a shot, I really doubted it would do anything but my oil light hasn't come on and it's been 1800 km. unless its the colder weather that is making it take longer to come it may seem it's potentially a good idea. I'm not convinced yet, but it is hopeful.

Scrap that idea. 1900km oil light is on again.

So I went to Subaru to see whats next with my Oil consumption problem...The Oil light came on after 2000 km, they checked the oil and said they only had to add .5 a liter. So this falls into their guidelines as normal oil consumption and they will not do anything unless it goes back to burning 1 liter of oil in 1600km.
BULL****TTTT!!!!!

Unfortunately they go by the standard that most companies adopt. You are pretty close to the threshold, I would drive the 1,600 miles very hard. You may be able to burn a bit more oil that way.

PCV valve did nothing. My oil light came back on again after only 1000 km (about 620 miles). Subaru ended up adding almost a liter of oil. I called Subaru finally and they said they have ordered me a new engine. I was completely stunned when the service guy said they have ordered it. Looks like they have decided to something about this problem.
Have you had any success with your oil consumption?

Wow, congrats on getting a new engine! I know it's probably not something you wanted to have to go through, but hopefully you won't have anymore oil problems. Were you burning more oil than the max of 1 quart per 1200 miles? Or whatever that translates into liters per km?

My dealer blew me off and tell me to go talk to Subaru. I am burning a quart anywhere from 900 to 1100 miles.

Its weird... my car started burning more and more oil until it was just about a quart per 1200 miles. Then the weather got cold and it seems to be burning much less now. Hopefully it stays that way for the winter. I can only guess that the consumption will get worse again when the weather starts to warm up tho...

I've noticed that the colder weather has reduced consumption.
When it warms up, I expect to see the same rate as usual.
Congrats on the new engine, man!!
Seems that in California or Canada, they replace engines.

I would not take a new engine. I would speak to Subaru of America/Canada and tell them you dont want a new car with a replacement engine. Insist they give you a new car... Not sure how many miles you have on your car, but even if you have to pay a little out of pckt for usage I think you would be better off. I went through similar situation with VW, and if you really complain I think they will replace your car. Nobody is going to want to buy a car with a replacement engine.. Just my opinion. Good Luck either way

+1 unless its a vintage car or something highly modded, i would never buy a car with a replacement engine, youd lose your ass on resale value

That's actually a good way of looking at it. Glad to see others share my view of consumers rights. At least some!

They won't replace the engine.

For precedent when there was an issue with forester engines a couple of years ago, that came from the factory with misbored valve guides, the recall fix was to rebuild the heads.

There is no way they will replace the engine, much less the entire car, when they can more cheaply fix the issue.

Of course first they need to admit it is a recall issue and figure out why some cars are consuming oil so they can implement a fix.

So if you have a car consuming oil, keep it filled so the rest of your engine is ok if they come through and replace the compression rings or whatever they determine needs to be fixed.

I'd still rather have an engine replaced than nothing. Subaru.

And they ALREADY HAVE replaced engines. In Canada, California, and I believe one somewhere in the northeast. Maybe Australia, too.

I think the person in Canada did have his engine replaced, but only because Subaru wanted the engine to investigate the problem, that's what he wrote, anyway

I am just trying to help. If you have repeated problems for the same issue and if the car is in the shop for x amount of days.. the car may qualify for lemon law. I went through situation with my 2008 VWGTI - my clutch kept sticking to the floor, after several attempts to fix, they realized that there was something wrong with the throw out bearing which did something to the block - resulting in them saying they had to replace the engine. I called VW of America and flipped, told them I dont want a new car under warranty with a new engine, would kill the resale value, long story short they opened up a case file, and a rep/mediator from VW wanted to resolve the situation and the resolution was they found me a 2010 car, same color options and I had to fork out 1500 dollars for depreciation, but that means i used my car for almost 2 years for about 90 bucks a month. I jumped on the resolution. Hope this helps. I guess I am saying dont settle. Once again, this is just what I would do, It is your car, good luck with whatever you decide. But, I personally would never buy a used car that had the engine replaced, and an engine replacement will show on a car fax report. Good Luck

First off, they most likely won't replace the whole engine. They will replace the short block. Secondly, they will fix your engine if you meet the criteria, which is 1qt per 1200 miles. If you meet that then they will fix it. Lastly, what makes you people think that a repaired engine will depreciate the value? Do you really think that people will take the engine serial number and run it through the computer?

First off he or she's post stated they would be replacing the engine, there was no word of most likely. Secondly, all anyone was was doing was sharing opionions and experiences. Lastly please don't use the horrid "you people" as I have heard most people do not appreciate that term. Once again Just MY OPINION. Really? Answer this. 2 cars, similar mileage, condition, one with engine replaced, what would you purchase. Just think about it. I hate that you made me type this.

Not likely to replace the engine. As in WHOLE engine. A whole engine includes the short and long block. My best friend is a tech, I know what is involved with mitigating an oil consumption issue in the FB motors, both Forester and Impreza. Also the 1qt per 1200 miles is the standard they use as the threshold, so that is a fact, not a matter of opinion. With regards to 'you people', I thought I was doing you a favor by not calling you out, but hey - I meant "vwgti123". Happy? To to answer your last point, you still haven't addressed how they would know it was a replacement engine? That's MY point, you don't seem to get it. Perhaps you should take a bit more time reading the post thoroughly. As the FNG, I would think you would do more listening?

I'd rather have a new engine than keep having to add oil every couople thousand miles. I bought the car to keep for at least a decade. When I'm done with any car, it has 200,000 or more miles and is worth very little.
I'm not at all saying that a new car isn't prefferable, only that after a year of empty promises, and a total dismissal of the issue at the corporate and dealer levels, any fix would be better than another year of the same.
I bought a NEW car to avoid these issues of constant maintenance. My 98 GMC is holding up way better than this car, and I LOATHE GM PRODUCTS.

That engine replacement in Canada wasn't the only one there, iirc. And there's a woman in cali who got a new engine. That's on a long thread about oil consumption on Edmunds.
More than one or two have been replaced!
