Default 2003 New SE Lights Dimming Issue

Just got a 03 SE Manual. When I am Idling in Neutral at night with the lights on, if I hit the brakes the headlights and other electrical lighting dims. It is not as noticeable on the interior lights unless the maplights are on but it is real noticeable off the headlights especially when I am behind another vehicle and can see the light reflecting off the back.

This seems real shoddy to me. My 97 OB had no problem with dimming, even with a big ass AMP and Subwoofer in the back.

Anyone have any ideas?

Ed

The car is wondeful. Best money I could have spent considering all the features.

You got the moon roof for your rear passengers?

the alternator might not give out enough output.
My alternators had been replaced on 1998 and 2000 Legacy GT.
Both unit were putting out low amps.

The moon roof seems like such a waste for the back seats, I wish we could get the sedan roof on the wagon.

I never open it past the popup - and always run the air in the summer - so is is a waste.

SE's in canada don't get the moonroof!

Where did you get your high output alternator for the car? I have a 1998 2.5GT and I don't have any problems right now with the output (I have only a modest sub system right now) but I'm planing a bigger system in the spring and need to know just in case.

I figure I will upgrade all the wiring while I'm at it as well.

nothing like a little 0awg or 2/0awg wire from the alternator to the battery

Our family has 2 Legacies and an Outback. All three cars do the same thing on occasion. I'm not exactly sure why it happens, but I assume it's normal. It only dims for a split second though, like a lot of current was drawn away from the headlights.

The strange thing is, I run 2 amplifiers off my stock battery/amp and the lights never dim no matter how how I may have the stereo cranked. The only time it ever happens is when I first hit the brakes.

My 90 legacy did that on occasion.

I've added some extra 4 gauge wiring to the alternator & other ground points. I haven't noticed anything for a while.

Make sure all of you that have 98ish cars have had your altenator replaced under the recall as well as the master brake cylinder. Funny story to go with this in that I had been putting off getting mine done(alt) do to procastination and it had been working fine. Well on a resent trip to oregon's PIR for the subaru day down there I started loosing power while driving. After a trip to the zoo, the car would start but wouldn't go anywhere, so AAA towed me down to the local dealership(Wentworth). The guys there were great and hooked me up with quick service to get me back on my way home to WA.

Well, they replaced my alternator under this recall (mistakenly), and I actually think the new alternator is the culprit for making my lights dim. I don't ever remember having this symptom before they decided to screw around with my alternator.

F.Y.I. - NEVER GO TO FALCONI SUBARU FOR ANYTHING! (they decided to replace my alternator without consulting me first when I took my car for an oil change. i was waiting for 3 hours for my car! long story...)
