Default Lining up engine with transmission spline

Engine is out of the car for delta cams, new clutch and related maintenance items. I spent about 4hrs yesterday trying to get the engine lined up with the transmission which is still installed in the car with no success at all.

Most every clutch install guide I read says to pull the tranny not the engine, I'm wondering, should I just pull the tranny and either mate them outside the car and install as one unit OR pull tranny reinstall engine then tranny.

I'm open to any tips and tricks for getting engine to line up as is, otherwise looking for suggestions for easiest resolution.

Spinning the crankshaft pulley has worked for me in the past. The only other advice I have is be patient. Sometimes it helps to jack the transmission up an inch or so and that can help it slide together.

are you doing this yourself? I've always spun the driveshaft with it in gear to get it to spline

It is a little harder to line it up with the motor swinging. As long as you have the disc aligned in the center, it will just take a little patience.

all about the angle... make sure the dogbone is off and jack up the trans as high as you can so the engine mounts clear. Then hang the engine on the sling in the same angle. And finally as already mentioned you can spin the crank to help it mesh. If everything is on point it will come right together.

Please, by no means take this as an insult...But did you use an alignment tool when you installed the clutch? Did you replace the pilot bearing and is it seated properly?

If so, sorry for stating the obvious. Crazier things have happened...

Agreed with all the earlier comments. The few times I've done this I had the front of the car up on low jackstands, then used a floor jack to jack up the front of the tranny (basically until it hit the top of the tranny tunnel), and had the engine on an angle (rear of the engine lower) so that it would line up. A breaker bar on the crank bolt will let you jiggle the crank a bit - shouldn't take much.

No insult taken, i've been hoping i overlooked something but yes I used the alignment tool. I've taken the engine out of the bay and double checked alignment a good four times by now.

The car currently sits on jack stands at close to their highest point, i was thinking that being so high made it tough to get proper leverage, lowering it to their lowest setting will be part of my next round of battle.

I bolt the clutch disc in the pressure plate but leave the bolts just hand-tight so the disc wiggles around a bit. Then I push the tranny onto the engine and tighten the bolts through the starter hole once everything is lined up. No alignment tool necessary.

Disclaimer: I'm not sure if that's an acceptable/safe/smart way of doing it, but that's how I've done it. I'm not an expert, and my posts don't replace thinking

I pulled the engine on mine, i think it's easier to install the cams with it out and i also did the Exedy LW flywheel and clutch while it was out. Cams and flywheel made it real fun. Is it getting close enough the pins are hitting? also it does make it a ton easier if the trans is jacked up and angled toward the engine a bit.

I put a little bit of grease on the splines and make sure theres no rust on the input shaft. keep it in gear, raise the trans, put a wrench of the crank pulley bolt and move it around and it usually slides in. Its not easy if you're doing this by yourself...sounds like you are. keep the faith, it'll go.

Update: I lowered the car from the jackstands 2nd highest position to their lowest position and was able to get the engine/tranny to mate within 10 minutes.
