The Patriot Axle 32gb does not work properly, it will cause the HU to freeze or crash. I'm just using my old 8gb Kingston Traveler now with no issues at all.

Hell, I got an older Toshiba 2G drive that I use just because I only keep certain songs that I wanna listen to but the problem maybe when you starting getting up there in capacity (32G) the HU may have a problem reading/accessing files fast enough. Maybe try the same with 8G/16G to see if the freezing issues cease.

Yeah I think anything bigger than 32gb causes the HU to crash and hang. I'll do some further testing with a variety of different USB keys.

For those looking for a 64GB drive, the Sandisk SDCZ60-064G "Cruzer Glide" works well.

Sweet, thanks Commander, I've been thinking about a bigger drive.

I am also using flash drives for music. Works out pretty nice, but as others have said, it is a pain finding music. Unless I am missing something, I only see a folder number. I have no idea until something starts playing what album it is. I was able to get about 650 songs on a 4 gig drive. Music saved to the puter at 320 bps. Higher bit rates result in both better volume and better sound quality. Anyway, what I decided to do was get a bunch of 4 gig drives from Micro Center for 4 bucks a piece. That way, I can divide the music up a little and tape a label to the outside. For that price, you really can't go wrong. I can drive to Micro Center myself. Otherwise, they charge a buck per drive for shipping, which seems a little stupid to me but whatever.

I currently have the 32GB Sandisk in my car that was recommended in this thread. It works very well, around 1700 songs or so, most in 320 aac format. Also, I ran the songs through mp3gain, a windows shareware program, to normalize the volume of the songs. It seems to help with more even volume from song to song, so you don't have to adjust the volume so much.

Bitrate: 320 is the highest that the head unit can play, gets you the best sound. Given how cheap these thumb drives are, I see no reason to go with smaller files to save room. The best sound is with 320 bps sound encoded in aac/mp4 format, a bit better than mp3.

Folders: the folder name shows below the folder number on the display, at least the first 15 characters or so. If it's not showing for you, try pressing buttons until it does show.

Organization: your suggestion of organizing music onto separate drives would work well. As for me, too lazy. I usually just listen in drive random mode. If it jumps to a song I'm not interested in, I move to the next song. If it stops on an album that interests me, I'll take it out of random mode.

Have been using MP3Gain for years on PC and MAC. It is a great and free tool to equalize MP3 volumes.

Ah, thank you. I'll give that a try.

Also, thinks for the mention of the program to equalize the volume. It's not a huge deal with the steering wheel controls, but a nice idea.

The display does not show any Asian languages, the characters show up as "*".

Anyone find the random shuffle not very random at all? It almost seems the car has a predefined list of songs it picks from when random mode is enabled.

MP3Gain is awesome, I use it for everything.

Thanks!

As for random/shuffle there are different kind of algorithms.

Two main ones are

One is completely random so you can get songs back to back but highly unlikely and the other is create a random list then play

No problem.

I've gotten the same song back to back before while I was skipping through tracks with the steering wheel controls.

No problems playing from an 8 gb sandisk echo drive.

DOn't really get how the system plays through a folder though. Not alphabetical or by track order.
Also annoyed the system doesn't read tag information. Only shows file/folder names. Much better on my old civic. Mild annoyance I guess. Still plays the files fine.

It's pretty random, seems like you get a better shuffle if you have more folders with fewer songs in them as opposed to fewer folders with more songs in them (folder song limit is 210 tracks).

Can the premium head unit handle nested folders? My collection is currently sorted as \artist\album\side or disk #(if applicable)\ on my computer, so I'd hate to spend all day reorganizing it.

It handles recursion fine. All folders in the tree are counted, but it will only play from the ones containing music, so pushing the ^ button once might increment the F count by several.

I was doing it wrong as I did not understand the "Folder 243" count included subdirectories, this guide helped: Subaru media hub

In addition to improving the audio quality, it was my desire to easily/quickly navigate through folders and subfolders of artists/songs that made me upgrade my stock HU to a Pioneer double-DIN touchscreen model.

I also use the low-profile SanDisk Cruzer 16 GB flash drive. It works well, although it takes the Pioneer HU some time (10-15 sec) before it starts playing a song when I first turn the car on, or first select the USB input. I don't know if this slowness is the HU's fault or the Cruzer's fault.

I found on the ride to work today that I need to reorganize my collection into single-level folders that effectively become playlists, hopefully I can set Winamp to do that easily vs doing it manually.

Using Winamp's Autofill capability resulted in a very interesting mix of music, 60% of which I am not sure how it ended up on my computer to begin with (Ace of Base and Ludacris were especially amusing when I was half asleep)

I use a 32 gb mustek high speed USB key and on the 4400 you have the same lag time when switching to USB not a deal breaker for sure. The 8400 loads immediately seems anything but the top spec loads slower still can't complain with all the bells and whistles

Agreed, it's not a big deal. I'm just surprised that it loads so slowly. I guess the HU has a slow CPU, and therefore takes a while to build up the directory structure from the flash drive. It's my guess that the directory structure gets recreated from scratch each time the car is turned on or USB input is selected.

It would be nice if even when I'm in another mode (for example, XM mode), the HU was smart enough to access the USB drive in the background and load up the directory structure so that when I switch to XM mode it's already ready and waiting to play. But I guess it's just not powerful/clever enough to do that.

Lol the 8400 has a directory database that it asks you to create that way it loads super fast seems CPU and all the features we wanted only got given to the 84

I arrived at this thread from the OPs orginal thread, having swapped my 32GB Sandisk drive for a 32GB HP-branded drive (was switching up my folders and wrote them to a different drive for quick swap), and had the exact same problem you described with your Patriot drive. So, there must be something about certain brands of drives that is incompatible. Currently writing my updated folders onto my Sandisk...
