front diff/ rear diff/ and RWD conversion
hey. ive got a JDM 4.11 trans, and a supposedly 4.11 JDM rear diff on the way. so, if my rear diff turns out to be somthing OTHER than 4.11 i am screwd rite>?
differnt gear ratio front/rear diffs make transmission blow up? so......... if i were to do the RWD converison, with the welded center diff, i could run whatever rear diff i wanted right? from my understanding, on a RWD car, FR layout, you can swap whatever rear diff gearing u want and drive it w/o any other transmission changes correct? dos the subaru trans when turned into FR and no axels int eh front do the same? h

Why would you be screwed, a US 4.11 diff is somehow different from a JDM 4.11 diff
There are 4 common differential ratios, all of which can be easily found. The hardest is probably 4.44 which I just so happen to have for extra parts. 3.54 3.9 and 4.11 are fairly common so it wouldnt be so hard to find another. Even 3.7 is very easy to, but only prior generation subarus use them. |

I dont understand. Swapping rear differentials is far easier than any of the other work you have to do! I did it WITHOUT a lift or special tools ALL ALONE in my driveway!

In answer to your question, Supermoose... YES, you need to match the ratio of the rear diff with that of your tranny/front diff. If they are different it will be very bad. If your rear diff does come in the wrong ratio it's fairly easy to change it with a new ring/pinion set. That said, it's also VERY easy to get a US 4.11 rear diff.... I see no advantage to getting a 'JDM' one either... they're the same thing.
