Question H6 swap in an RS, opinions

Ok, just curious, if a buddy could put a 2.2 'lude engine in his 95 civic DX, why can't we put the H6 in an impreza if it's only marginally longer and 40kg heavier?

I know custom enigne mounts are in order, but if you had the engine, ecu, and tranny does anyone know what else would be involved?

I am 100% certain it could be accomplished with enough motivation, money and skill in welding.

I would say getting the dimensions of the engine and tranny (or planning a MT swap) would be the first step.

The biggest problem I see is that presumably you would want to use the stock front axles, cv joints, etc. The whole works. Well this predetermines the placement of the engine within the chassis, does it not? So then you have to be concerned as to what kind of accessories and radiator can be fabricated.

Oh, and besides originality I would have some plan for this motor besides "only" 212HP, since you can get 212HP without the weight a whole lot easier starting with an EJ25.

But colin, 212hp is just the beginning with the H6....imagine a turbo for that sucker!!!
Biggest drawback would be that it's auto. Well to me anyways.

Bah, it uses the same bellhousing as an EJ series motor. If this thing is within budget, then all kinds of crazy stuff would be too.

I bet the STi 6 speed would bolt right up, except for the small problem of fabricating a flywheel. Maybe you'd get real lucky and that would port right over too. (doubt it!)

But anyway, absolutely I would turbocharge or do something similarly drastic to this thing. Actually, a big turbo would go great with the VTD automatic!

I'm not a mechanic, but even an engine swap of the same type is a bitch. I helped a friend with his 1996 200SX after he blew his and found one at a junkyard for $200. It was probably the most difficult thing to do. You'll probably have to change differential, axles, exhaust, etc. If you're going to go through all that to get an extra 35 horses, you might as well get a Supercharger or Turbo. It'll be about the same (if not less) in cost after the welds / mods in the H6 engine swap and I think you'll even get more power to the wheels. Just something to think about

The Forester it comes in also uses the 2.5, so it shouldn't be a problem for the transmission side. Don't know anything about the engine mount locations, but they might be the same, also? Same tranny and chassis as for both engines. Might be tight for the radiator, but should fit. Intakes can always be modified to fit, too. The only problem is the weight. The RS is already front heavy, and hanging that much extra weight on the front is just going to increase the understeering. Just my 2/100ths of a dollar. Peace!

What about the engine being internally balanced using the torque converter and all that? I thought I read something in SCC and a lot of other places that made it sound like it'd be a real pain. If you want to get more power spend the time and effort to build up your EJ25, bore it out, new pistons, rods, valve job, front mount ic, turbo cam, turbo or twin turbo it, and put a good exhaust on it. That should make a pretty reliable engine for not that much more weight (not 40kg anyways) and the potential for some massive power. Or you could do it the Spruce Scoob way and try to stuff some big, inefficient, built for automatic tranny engine in it too.

I personally think for a car like the RS that already slightly understeers, that extra 90lbs in the nose would have an adverse effect on handling at the limit.
But, if say you were to do a full build up on the engine with headwork and stuff to make 300hp or so, you might have a decent strip/street racer.

This discussion is focused around installing the new H6, the EZ30, into an RS. It is aluminum block, unlike your iron block SVX motor and is shorter as well as a few hundred pounds lighter.

I definitely do respect the svx motor though, having seen > 600HP twin turbo versions on sandrails.

There was a thread on this not too long ago. It would be an interesting swap. But certainly not practical. Also... Two different motors for two different kinds of driving and two different kinds of cars. The H-6 is for a long distance cruiser, smooth, torquey and buttery. Perfect for a 3500 lb SVX. In a light weight Impreza, I dunno. It would fit in an Impreza, but would change the personality of the car, and I wouldn't think it would be for the better.

well to whoever tries it, best of luck.. please keep us all posted..

i think the most difficult part would be getting an impreza 5-speed to bolt up to it.
I wouldn't even bother if i couldn't use a 5 speed

that would be so rad!! if you could get an high revving flat 6 in there.. just with N/a mods you should have an 300hp killer

my 2cents

Um please stop smoking the crack. Subaru has never sold a motor other than possibly the justy's motor with a cast iron block. Even the 70 FF1 uses a aluminum block.

Oh and I agree for now its a much better idea to use a EJ-25

FYI. I read somewhere that the H6 is only 2cm longer than the EJ25, and 40kg heaver. However the intake was a fair bit higher than the intake on our EJ25. I think that is where some problems will come around.

Are they really selling the Forester with the H6? Last I heard it was just the Upper end Outbacks...
And I'm pretty sure you DON'T want to use a stock Impreza 5-speed, even moreso if you're going to turbo the 6.
