Default OT Parents: How much should health insurance be for a family of 3?

I'm having a dillema at work with the cost of health insurance. The rate sounds a little too astronomical at about $1200/month. This is with Blue Cross PPO for a family of 3 with the wifey and 2 month old son. The coverage is great but I know there is cheaper out there. Can anyone make a recommendation on health insurance providers and ballpark costs for a mid to high mid-range plan?

Thanks,

Adam

You can prolly go straight to BCBS and get a cheaper price than through work at that rate.

$1200? That sounds like not only is your company not paying any of your health insurnace, but they are tacking on a % for themselves.

Unless ofcourse you, your wife and your 2-month old are all smokers.... then I could see it being reasonable.

is your company not paying any of it at all? for me my bluecross ppo is $50/mo. It would be $100/mo including spouse and children.

That's pretty different than you paying $1200.

If you go to the BCBS website you can get a quote on what it would cost if you went on your own. It will depend on where you live, etc., but likely it's about $750/month for the PPO plan. So you are saving $300/month just off what it would cost you out of pocket - plus you would have to pay for it after taxes, so add at least 28% to that.

$1200 does not sound out of place to me.
I pay just about that much per month for Blue Cross/Blue Shield at a premium coverage level and IIRC a $10K major medical deductible at 80/20.
I'll have to recheck the deductible amount as it might be slightly less.
And thats upon choosing to have a complete health screening prior and rescreenings every IIRC 3 years which gets us a lower premium.
Both of us are categorized as non-smoker, non -drinker, active with below low normal bad cholesterol and above normal good cholesterol ratings amongst other test results.

Yes health insurance is expensive, but the having none is stupid expensive.
Take your pick. :\

Check www.tonik.com , run by Blue Cross. It used to be for Gen Y youngsters under the age of 28, but now its for everyone. It includes vision and dental, and has very good benefits. I'm 31, and it would've been $130 for me a month.

Due to my wifes previous cancer, we decided to stay with BC at $450 a month for the 3 of us on the Individual Select HMO.

Well the bad news is, the employee + spouse + kids is the same whether you have 1 kid or 11.

FWIW, i work at Chase, near you and for Aetna POS level II, I pay $300. Not sure what they pay though. i was under the impression it was 50/50 but I may be wrong.
