Post clutch problem - need help

Hey guys/gals,

I'm hoping you guys can help me solve a clutch problem with my 98RS. It seems that my clutch is not fully disengaging. The initial 3-4 inches of travel on the clutch pedal is all play. Also I can only shift into gears when the car is not running. And when the car is idling in gear with the clutch pedal down to the floor, the car moves.

I have an ACT clutch which has been installed for a year now. This problem didn't occur gradually. It just happened as if something broke, so the clutch probably doesn't need adjustment.

I've checked the clutch fluid - that's ok. I'm going to play with it some more. But hopefully some of you know exactly what the problem is. Maybe its my simple knowledge of cars but I'm guessing that the problem is centralized around the clutch pedal - like spring fell off or something. I dunno. Please donate some of your knowledge. Thanks.

I can't help you on the problem but my friend has an ACT clutch on a MY00 RS and it just broke or something. It shifts fine when driving but it does not release all the way. Does anyone know why it would do this? The car was stored during the winter and worked fine last fall. Anyone?
Thanks
Bob

It's strange, but the clutch is working fine now. And all I did was let it sit over night. This leads me to believe that the problem occured because the clutch fluid overheated and stopped working, just like brake fluid does at times. Does anybody know if this is possible? Its funny because just recently somebody posted how they have never seen this and it most likely would never happen.

I should replace the fluid since it is slightly more brown than the brake fluid. The service dept probably forgot to do it at the 60k tune-up. What would be the root cause for this problem - too much moisture in the fluid?

Scooby do, it sounds like your friend has the same problem as mine. So, maybe he should start off by changing his clutch fluid like me.

Note: The Imprezas have a hydraulic actuated clutch, which uses brake fluid. So yes, you may have overheated the fluid causing it to "boil"! Do a search in the "Archive: Technical" since I remember a few members who had similar problems. They bled the clutch and put in synthetic brake fluid and they said it made a HUGE difference.

Hope this helps,

Joe

I didn't have time to bleed out the clutch until yesterday, so the clutch problem kept occuring after long drives. But ever since I bled the clutch fluid using valvoline brake fluid, the problem is gone. In fact, the clutch pedal feels stronger. Thanks for your replies guys.

I've seen similar problems with hydraulic clutches, particularly on motorcycles. Hydraulic master and slave cylinders aren't usually built to the same exacting tolerances as braking system units. This means that they clutch units are more susceptable to foreign matter interfering with sealing. Changing the fluid usually flushes out any foriegn materials, and the problem goes away. I think if you did manage to heat your clutch fluid up to boiling temperature, something would really be wrong. Chances are your engine would be on fire.
