Question What muffler to pick for a deep and not loud tone?

What is the best way to get a super deep earthshaking tone without being too loud?

I want to have that deep flat 4 tone and nothing that would attract cops...

I am thinking of Apexi N1 but if I can go deeper I'd like to know

Please help

Thanks

Sunny

hahah, deja vu...just posted on this...prodrive WR sport...

luke @ tirerack should be able to get them for the '02+ cars.

looks like a nice OEM system, silent at cruise, mean when you want it to be, quiet when the 'man is around.

apex/tanabe style systems WILL attract police attention.

Cool

I have a borla 2.5" catback on my impreza and it is a very nice deep tone. It will not attract cops. I live in kind of a small town and the cops always look for an excuse to pull over people, but they have not given me any trouble about my exhaust. You can make it sound ultra quiet at cruising speeds, but give it some gas and it sounds low and mean. It also is nice an burbbly when you let of the gas...which I love. I have also felt the difference power-wise with it. Definately an improvement in the higher rpm's and at highways speeds. Before I had it installed and was going 65-70 and wanted to pass someone, it wasn't very responsive, but with the borla I can tell a difference.

I have heard the Apexi and it is really loud. You will definately be a cop magnet with one of those.

Sunny - the N1 muffler WILL get you in trouble with the po-po! Trust me - you living in Richmond, you'll have a hard time driving around with that muffler on. One look at it, and that'll give them an excuse to pull you over.

Your best bet, would be to get a good muffler body styled straight-through exhaust system. You can go custom setup and get a good "generic" brand straight-through muffler style exhaust system. That'll give you the nice deep boxer tone, without being obnoxiously loud. There was an SCC article a few months back that talked about creating your own good flowing custom exhaust for not too much moolah. You should look into it.

sti is very deep and rumbly at idle and low rpms... not buzzy at all so it won't attract cops. Very nice sound.. $$$ though.

Magnaflow custom cat-back with a resonator built in.

Its very quiet at cruising and idle, and still quieter than most at WOT. Not ricy or buzzy, and a deep tone.

mine is a SS muffler (straight through design) with offset/center ends.

Edit: its loudst between 1500 and 3000 RPM

The Apexi N1 is like one of the loudest exhuasts u can buy. Apexi is LOUD. LOUD LOUD LOUD.

Stromung/Brullen gives a very nice and deep sound that isn't too loud.

Thanks for the advice... I'm thinking of taking Penphoe's idea, cuz I am already using the WRX muffler... I would want to try to get that to give me the nice tone... because that way it would look stock... maybe custom headers and midpipe then?

Thanks

Sunny

Sunny - Get a Magnaflow muffler and do a custom setup. Shouldn't cost too much - just need to find a Magnaflow dealer here @ home.

Get a midpipe done up first.

Or headers, that'll "open" up the sound a lot more.

Best thing to do in my opinion? I heard T-Rex's old Borla setup on his RS before, and that thing is DEEP. I've heard my fair share of exhausts for the Subaru, and let me just say, if you want deep Borla is the way to go.

Heard the Stromung, people say it's loud, bassy, etc...I think it's quiet. *shrug* Can't hear it at all, almost like stock.

Scoobysport, good stuff, but very expensive. Or you can just rip it off Ashton's car.

Apex'i N1, depending on how the midpipe is setup, if it's a Subaru specific system or a custom system with universal N1 muffler, it's quite loud. You've heard Orbiter's car, although his is definitely not the norm.

Ooh, just thought of a good one, Greddy Evo. Heard it on FB's car and it is nice. DEEP and not too loud (and you know my standards for loud) so it'll be fine for the police. Just don't go blasting around full throttle around the police.

Cheap? And all you care about it sound?

EASY.

Get a drill and punch some holes into your WRX muffler.

There's your solution.

I wouldnt say anything to an officer about harleys. That would be invading on the brother hood. A lot of officers own Harleys. More than likely you would just make him angry for being an ass. I'm not trying to be mean I just know this first hand from working with officers all day long.

I recommend the magnaflow muffler w/ custom tubing as well. I have the dual 3" tip SS magnaflow muffler w/ 2.25" piping. You can check out yahoo shopping and search for magnaflow mufflers, that's how I got mine... Just be careful, the cheapest price doesn't mean it's gonna be the cheapest after shipping. Some of those guys try to gain in shipping what they lose in the price of the product.

My car next to one with one with the stromung, my muffler has the deeper rumble to it... love it! :d

I'm using a Remus muffler with 2.25" piping. The sound is very retro in that it sounds like a 60's MG or Triumph. Horsepower gain was significant too. I specifically wanted to avoid that coffee can buzzy sound that all the Civic guys seem to have!

Don't laugh so hard! In a lark of drunken stupidity I actually took a 1 1/2" hole saw to the back of my stock muffler. Believe it or not, one hole sounded good. Two holes sounded louder but not horribly loud. I drove it like that for a year, no added po po attention. Now when I did the third and fourth hole just to see how it sounded before replacement it was ass.
I realize it's cheap and people will tease you and poke you with sharp sticks and such, but many people were impressed by my two hole muffler. Untill I told them I drilled holes in it that is.......

My cobb system has a nice deep sound too it. Not incredibly loud either. It is actually the loudest when i am decelerating, it is fun setting off car alarms coming home at one in the morning
