2005 OBXT w/ EJ20X Swap Help
Hey all,
Just finished swapping an EJ20X into a 2005 Outback XT that I bought with a blown engine. The Outback was completely stock before this swap. Now the cars setup is as follows: JDM EJ20X w/twin scroll vf38 setup(catless uppipe) TGV Delete USDM ECU and Harness USDM Yellow Injectors (540cc?) Have the JDM blues but heard they flow less. Custom 2.5 Catless DP to Stock Exhaust (one cat) 91 Octane JDM Manifold JDM Throttle Body JDM Cam Sensors JDM Crank Sensor USDM Knock Sensor USDM Map Sensor USDM MAF Sensor JDM Cams in factory position Exhaust AVCS unplugged Pretty much used everything that I could from the EJ20x that would plug in directly. Only changed the Map sensor trying to troubleshoot this problem. So tried to start this thing yesterday and it did start and idle but very rough. Seemed like only two cylinders firing. Let it idle a few seconds and then tapped throttle and it died immediately. Tried to restart but now only stumbles, backfires and dies. Checked that fuel is good and getting to motor. There is a chance that the injectors are gummed up as I am guessing the blown motor was sitting for awhile but seems slim. Really seems like a timing issue. Like when it idled on the first start the cam position was just barely allowing it to run but when I tapped the throttle the position changed and now is to far out to run. I have not touched any of the tuning yet but am under the impression that it should at least idle somewhat smoothly on the factory EJ255 map. Can anyone here confirm that? Is it possible that these changes would be enough to cause my issue? Displacement TGV Deletes Uppipe Cat gone Downpipe Cat gone My next plan of attack is to mess with the fuel maps. Anybody got some helpful info? Thanks in advance!

Every tuner I've ever talked do has told me they're garbage motors for USDM swaps - was considering swapping one into my buddies 06.
If you can get the AVCS fully functional, they're a little better, but they are just not great engines. You really need E85 to have good torque. There's a reason they're so cheap - they're commuter economy based motors. people see the black intake and think OMG IT MUST BE BETTER. They have really high compression and it takes so much work to make it worth it with the AVCS - https://www.flatironstuning.com/blog...x-ej20y-engine Last edited by K3rm1tth3fr0g; 08-28-2021 at 01:27 PM. |

I agree they are too difficult to be worth the effort in the US market value the cost of rebuilding a 257 the right way or going 207. But they are actually quite capable; better than the 205 but not as good as a 207. Aussie's push them harder than we can push OEM 257/255 short blocks. The 9.5:1 CR is hard to use on our pump gas and make power. But if someone is looking for a good starting point for stand alone EM with a dedicated track car and doesn't have the money for a 207 or build 257, then it can be done with reliability to 400ish hp. But for a daily driver or "quick" swap for a blown engine, then I completely agree they aren't worth anything when considering the complexity of the swap.

A JDM 205 can make ~400whp on a dynojet too Dedicated track car with standalone that just runs ethanol? Sure maybe, but it's going to be pretty expensive to wire up the DAVC to make it worth it unless you do it all yourself + the cost of the standalone ECU - which kind of negates the entire purpose of it being cheap. |

Should start on the USDM map. One we dropped in the wife's OBXT started and ran first try before we tuned. Seconded the need for E85 to wake the motor up.
