Default Utah Skiing!

I am making my way over to Park City next Monday for a week of skiing and b-day shenanigans with two of my buddies. I cannot even begin to tell you how excited I am. I am a die hard east coast skier, and after making my way to CO last year I got a taste for Rocky mountain pow!

I had a few questions and was wondering if you can help me out. First off, is it worth buying E tix online before arriving at the resort? We are staying at The Canyons, but I have always wanted to go to Snowbird so I was thinking a day trip may be in order. When i was in CO, we stopped at a local ski shop and they had a ticket machine for multi-mountain passes. Is it the same in UT?

Also, what is the main difference in drinking laws? Is park City a party town? We are going to celebrate my buddies' 30th's and i'm sure we are gonna set aside one night to get festive Any suggestions on a good place for dinner and drinks?

And finally, looking at the long term weather forecasts, it is looking like we may get soe nice powder days Are there any local weather sites that you locals use for better forecasts?

Guys thanks in advance for your help! Wish I could have brought the subie along

I just went if you dig up my post. Snobird was terrible for us. Super icy and the conditions just sucked.

For cheap tickets, stop by Canyons Sports in SLC...we saved close to $100 by buying our tickets there compared to at the resorts.

The snow has sucked this season, all the good storms are pounding the east coast. But we might be getting some storms next week when you get here.

Bummer about Snowbird being icy They are saying weather patterns will drastically shift towards the end of this wek and the end of the month looks stormy... Hopefully we luck out.

That thread was very helpful... especially with restaurant suggestions. And I will check out Canyons Sports. In CO Vail, Keystone, Breck and Copper (?) were all owned by the same company so multi-mountain passes were super convenient.

Fingers crossed. Coming out to UT and not getting to experience the world famous powder would suck The storms over here were good, but high winds and a big thaw next week will bring back east coast woes.

You might be better off going to Colorado again. It seems the storms are going around us and hitting them. We don't have that much snow right now and it's bee a while since we've had a good one.

Too late for that... gonna have to do the snow dance this week. Although, I do have a good feeling about next week A few good shots of snow and it should be nice. Hell I'm from the east so I'm sure I'll have fun regardless

Yeah, the snow this season has been horrible. I haven't even been yet because everyone has said how icy it has been, and I'm spoiled and hate icy boarding. Plus, I suck too much to board on ice

Park City is a rich "town" It's like the 90210 of Utah. Liquor can only be bought at liquor stores and only M-Saturday before 10 pm. You can get drinks at bars and restaurant until 1am. There's less alcohol in everything you get here, but it costs the same. Otherwise I don't think there's much weird to the laws.

As for where to eat and drink, it depends on what you want to do and how much you want to spend.

That does suck about Snowbird they are normally my favorite resort, plenty of runs and room, and the snow is usually pretty good, but I haven't been up this season yet. and with no storms bringing enough snow that kinda sucks. haha

90210 Love it! Well, I was gonna stay at Snowbird but being that this is a b-day trip, the guys wanted a bit of nightlife I generally don't drink much when i ski, because being hungover on the chairlift is rough... We are gonna do one half day so that I can rehydrate and sleep in

I had a look at the other thread and have gotten some good ideas on where to grub. Lot's of Mexican options... a bit unexpected but me likey!

I'll make sure to check it out

OK, gonna do 3 day online discount tix to Canyons. Gonna keep my options open to do another resort one or two days. If you guys have any recommendations, feel free to chime in.

And someone who is more of an optimist has to have good news on the weather

thanks again!

You are talking to people who are use to GOOD snow. Even our worst day in Utah is better than anything you ski back east. Our mountains are huge, runs are long. Even if it's all tracked out the groomed runs aren't bad.

IMHO, skiing/boarding trips should be planned after the President holidays here. By that time the mountains should have a good enough base that just about everything is covered, opennig that much more terrain. Also, the spring storms dump on the mountains and the snow is still nice and dry. I have alwasy found that the best skiing is around that time.

Default bad ass skiing

We're glad to see you have chosen the greatest snow on earth to celebrate your friend's birthday and shred the best snow around. www.skiutah.com is a really good website for local everything having to do with local skiing and snowboarding. Also check out canyonsports.com its a local rental shop with many different locations. My advice to you is to rent your gear in the valley it will be cheaper than up in PC. also buy all your ski lift tickets at local ski shops such as canyon sports or others... you 'll save quite a bit of money especially on The Canyon's passes you'll save something like 17 or 18 dollars on each ticket for PC resorts and like 5 to 9 on the cottonwood resorts ( Brighton, Solitude, Alta and Snowbird) The cottonwoods have more snow and usually get more when the systems move through and dump the white gold.
PCPD are pretty lenient on most rules but still keep your distance you never know they could screw things up. Try to hit up snowbasin while your here its a bit out of the way but it straight up awesomeness, a diamond in the rough for sure. hope this helped man . peace and keep your tips up

gerrardallam, thanks for the advice! I will make sure to check out the website and get the tix from the local shops. I will be bringing my own equipment so I won't need rentals, but I wouldn't mind doing a demo on some super wide powder skis if the conditions are right. Oh and Snowbasin is now on my list

And we certainly chose Utah for the snow quality. I know that you guys are spoiled out there, and even if I'm not in knee/waist/neck deep powder I will still be able to enjoy the views and terrain. I usually plan my trips for the end of February when I know the base is good, but my two buddies are turning 30 on the same day.

And I hope I woun't get in trouble with local authorities Although honestly, I don't plan on getting too too rowdy

just don't be driving around or yelling a lot and they shouldn't bother you too much. But it's a wicked small town, and it's not beyond them to pull you over because they've seen you more than once that night.

I'll give you the low down. Really depends on what you want to ride.

Snowbird on a pow day (I personally wouldn't be caught anywhere else in the world)
On non pow days snowbird is horribly icy, crowded, boring, and full of yuppies.

If it isn't a pow day it really depends on if you ride park or not. If you do PC, Canyons are your best bet. I ride brighton right now but they don't have any jumps.

If you don't ride park, Snowbasin, solitude.

Yeah no park for me. I stay in the trees a lot here in the east. I like challenging terrain and natural features.

Looking at the Solitude and Snowbasin websites. Wow, you guys have it good over there!

that sucks 08WhiteRex you must of dealt with the dickweeds in force . Two of my friends were caught with a certain illegal plant and all they did was take it away from them and sent them on their way.
