Default Me + Drag Racing = FTL

So I went out with my buddy to Speed World tonight with his twin turbo 350Z that he finally fixed and I think broke again tonight. They had some big event going and there was a lot of really nice cars. So I figure I might as well make a couple runs. I know the WRX isnt a drag car bla bla bla but I like drag racing.

Well I found out I SUCK at drag racing. My best time was like 15.3 . I barely beat the 06 SI I was paired with. After the second run I stopped because it was embarrassing.

There was a couple really good races. A shop EVO vs. a modded 07 Z06. (Not the exact numbers)Evo won with a 12.1 to 12.3.

Biggest upset of the night a 80's model Camaro beat a crotch rocket with a 11.0 to 11.1. The Camaro's front wheels came off the ground. They parked next to me and I think they said they broke something.

There was a yellow bug eye and an 04/05 white STi out there so I hoped they put down some decent times.

Oh hell. Dont worry, the first time I took my car out I think I may have seen a 16 second pass. But after a few trips to the track I got her down to 14.5

its a time old tail - pratice make perfect

and to add with drag racing - ur not doing it right unless your breaking something

speed world holds a bit of haunting for me - broke a rear axle there

had to barrow a strangers trailer to get the car to a friends house in surprise

then had to barrow a friends trailer the next day to get the car home - in all was moving and shakin for over 36 hours

it wasnt a planned event so i was completely prepaired for the possible results - wasnt even supposed to race, but this led to that and there you have it

i guess on the good side - i now have 1000hp axles from the drive shaft shop

What do you guys suggest to cool the intercooler off? Some guy told me that a spray bottle filled with alcohol from the freezer works good because it will be colder than ice/water. That sounds kinda dangerous to me.

whenever i went to the track i always had an ice chest in the back with drinks and a few bags of ice. just dont let em see you icing down the IC or else they will bitch. and also leave the car off while ur in the staging lanes and just push it. once you are like the 2nd car back then go ahead and start it up.
dont actually spray anything on the Ic or else it might drip while you are on the track and that can be dangerous for you and others who are out there if they hit a patch of water

I've always left stock axles in every car i've dragged. My theory is if you are putting that much stress on your drive line then i'd rather have an axle break rather than a tranny or Diff....

That's not a bad reaction time for a cop. You need to learn how to feather the throttle and maybe slip the clutch a little. Are you using stock tires? You a, 'little nervous in the service?' I still get better launches on the street than the track, I need to work on my launches too, the best 60' i've gotten so far is a 1.78, I'm hoping to get it down to a 1.65, and then it should be able to get a low 12 sec pass. Smoby was pulling a 13.01 with a 2.2 60', damn skinny people!

+1 for the cooler full of ice. Block ice last longer, but cubed ice cools down the whole intercooler faster because it melts quickly. Don't ice it down while you in line. I would Ice my intercooler after a few passes in the parking lot, just make sure your not dripping in line, the 2wd people get a little but hurt, since they're fighting for traction anyways.

yeah, I was letting out the clutch to fast and bogging the car down.

My friend needs to work on the whole feathering the throttle. He couldnt get traction till about half way through third gear but still ran a 13.7. It was kinda cool though seeing the big ol Pirrelli 285s smokin at like 60mph.

I was the same way, I've been guilty spinning all four in 1st and 2nd during launching more than a few times. It's difficult to get traction with 285 WHP and 215 width tires. Just nerves and a heavy foot, It kinda sucks being the only GC at the track too, I feel like I have to prove something. It's gonna be even worse onces it's all painted and lookin' pretty. It just takes practice and experience. Once you figure out how to get a good launch, you'll be golden. Everything else is easy in comparison.

I went up to Speed World a few months back. I did terrible but I had a blast. It was my first time EVER launching my car. I didn't do too bad. My best time was 15.2. I was gonna make a thread about it but never got around to it. It was really fun, but I need to work on launching more. I forget what my 60' was but I'll try to find my slips when I get home later.

sounds like a slow night, not just for you. a modded '07 z06 running 12.3? must have been poor traction.

I think all the local tracks have traction problems, must be all the dust & dirt blowing around.
I saw a Viper on Hoosier slicks run a low 14 at firebird the night when I ran a 13.01, I didn't feel too bad after that! I'm sure my car is capable of mid to low 12's. A week before I wrecked the last GC, I had raced a Gallardo from a streetlight and I took him by 1- 11/2 car lengths to about 115 MPH.

Waiting in the staging lanes is boring.

I've taken my ride to the track a couple times. I'm too worried about the drivetrain to launch it hard, so I'm able to stay consistent by babying it. My first time to the track I was getting 2.0 60fts and running 15.0@93. Last spring I was running 14.0-14.1@96 with 1.9 60fts. That was with a gutted UP, DP, and a tune from Treefrogaz. When it cools off I'll do a couple more runs to see where I'm at since I've gone 3" catless and SPT intake...oh yeah and a great tune by Treefrogaz!!

Drag racing is fun, if you like it. It's also cheaper and usually less abusive to the vehicle. I saw an old-ass man racing a bone-stock auto trans 2000 Toyota Corolla! I think it ran a 19.8, it might have actually been over 20 sec, I think it trapped 69 mph? But I'm sure he was having a blast. As long as you enjoy it, any car can be fun to drag race. It's more of a challenge to get a good time out of a lower powered car, than some 1000+ HP trailered drag queen. It's a lot smarter and safer to go head-to-head at a proper 1/4 mile track than being a douchebag and thinking every stoplight is a drag strip. How cool are you going to look when your beating a piece-o-chit Neon in a street drag and hit and kill some dumb jaywalker? I'm not saying I haven't done my fair share of stoplight drags, but I don't go 'cruisin' the streets' looking for 'kills'. Streetracing=Ghey.
Don't knock drag racing, it's the oldest form of auto racing.
