I agree that DOHC engines are superior. Try making a SOHC 2.0L turbo put out 280HP reliably! But just crunching the numbers on stock 2.5 litres shows the SOHC is a torquier? performer than the DOHC.

That's not surprising, it's a better cylinder head... stock. If you went wild on one, I'd start with DOHC for sure.

I plan on having a 280hp SOHC reliable EJ25. I would prefer a DOHC for cam timing purposes, but so far, the aftermarket just isn't quite there for the DOHC.

Hey, I'd rather pay for just 2 cams than 4 when I do the Cobb upgrades!!

All WRX motors have always had DOHC for "supposed" more accurate cam timing.

Good one..personally i would rather have had my motor (DOHC 2.5) than a SOHC motor.. i just loved it..who cares if they had a Broader torque band..torque band smorque band

i loved 'er...
and the rexie is DOHC..which means if you get your hands on one, you HAVE to tinker with the cams on the intake and exhuast as well as boost the snot out of 'er and RAISE the CR by a point or 4 or are you scared to run around a 10:1 on 14lbs of boost?

Now remember the CR difference between the 98's and '99's(DOHC vs. SOHC)? The DOHC had a CR of 9.7:1 compared to 10:1 on the SOHC engines.
Other than that it doesn't take much for Subaru to modify the cam timing to increase the torque band. Retard the cam timing for bottom-end torque, sacrifice top-end power.

I'd say '98 DOHC for me...TURBO'd
