06 wrx gear set with 03 diff
Ok so I have been looking for an answer to this question with no avail. I have a 2003 wrx and I finally blew my trans up. I have a 2006 wrx 5 speed with only 37k miles on it. Would I be able to use the gears out of the 06 5 speed in the 2003 casing and 2003 center differential? Only reason why I want to do this is so I can avoid buying a new slave, axles, diff etc.

yes it will work because your centre differential you say seems fine which controls the rear differential. so you are good to use 06 speed gears in the gearbox. but use new seals all over.
the situation would be different if you used 06 wrx centre differential which means 06 rear differential it needs. i hope you understand that. |

this is one of the DUMBEST things ive seen posted in years the differential cares not in the slightest what gear ratio is present or what the transfer gear ratios are which are the IMPORTANT THINGS TO CONSIDER |

I figured none of that really made a difference. So this will work though correct Uncle Scotty?

coalslaw had it close to correct (...it wasn't "total drivel"), but the transfer gearing is the critical part. This is located near the center differential. You need to re-use your original transfer gearing and it needs to match the rear differential you are using. As long as you use your original R160 and transfer gearset, you're golden.
If you don't have transfer gearing that matches the rear diff. you end up with a front to rear mismatch in wheel speed and a center differential constantly trying to 'fix' this. In other words, it will destroy the center diff. in no time. |

I am using the 03 casing, center diff, rear diff and everything else. The only thing am using from the 2006 is the gears.

You must have missed my post... I'll summarize:
You need to use the transfer gears from the '03. |

Just to make sure I understand this, the transfer gears are the gears and shaft next to the input shaft and next to the center diff correct?

Yes.
I don't mean to sound condescending, but are you sure you're up to rebuilding the transmission? There's nothing wrong with being green and diving in, but I'd make sure you have all the tools, wear items, a FSM, and preferably, someone to check your work. It's not as complicated as a 6MT tranny, but you're gonna have a LOT of parts to keep track of. |

You don't sound conceded at all, no worries. I am not rebuilding the trans myself, a good buddy of mine that does nothing but subaru's is. I was just wanting to confirm everything would work before he got it all torn down. Thanks guys.

I thought you could use 06 gearset by mix matching with 03 transfer gears and all the assembly that is with the 03 r. diff and it's FD. okay maybe i post out of my ass. but worth the idea to consider doublechecking. |

It'll be fine as long as the shop transfers your front differential pinion off your old pinion shafts and puts it on your new pinions shaft. Use your old front differential ring and use your old transfers gears in the tail housing.
