Default 2008 STI Tranny Specs

There has been some discussion over the PPB about the 08 transmission in
the 08 STI.

Here is a look at the tranny parts from each model year.

First and Second Driven are new parts, as is 6th Drive. However the other side of 1st, 2nd, and 6th are UNCHANGED. So the ratio's must be the same as 07.

And here is a look at the tranny numbers for all of the US Spec WRXs and STIs.
Cheers,

Jeff

This is great info!

Would you be able to create a similar list cross-referencing tranny part numbers for WRXs? I'm looking to do a rebuild with new synchros and curious to see what has changed over the years. Thanks!

great info...
i had heard that although the gearing is the same, the gears, synchros, and oiling system had been revamped for the better. does anyone have any information on this or experience comparing the 08 to earlier models?
thanks...

edit: comparing info from www.cars101.com which says the 2008 STi gearing is:

2008 STi 6 speed manual
1st 3.636
2nd 2.235
3rd 1.521
4th, 1.137
5th 0.097
6th 0.756
Front final gear ratio: 3.9
Rear final gear ratio: 3.545

and according to the Transmission Gear Ratio thread here on NASIOC which states:

2004-2006 manual transmission gear ratios:
1st - 3.636
2nd - 2.375
3rd - 1.761
4th - 1.346
5th - 0.971
6th - 0.756
reverse - 3.545
final drive ratio - 3.90

2007+ manual transmission gear ratios:
1st: 3.636
2nd: 2.375
3rd: 1.521
4th:1.137
5th:0.971
6th: 0.756
reverse - 3.545
final drive ratio - 3.90

there is some confusion there. i'm thinking that the 2nd gear ratio for the 2007 STi is listed wrong here on NASIOC and thats where the confusion is?

The 2008 STi trans does not have a oil pump assembly. It now uses oil guides.
Another few notes: They is no longer a dipstick on the 08 trans and the 08 no longer uses the speedometer sensor.
I still need to check if I can install a 07-earlier Speedometer driven gear shaft so that the 08 trans can be swapped into an older car and still have the speedo work.
07 and 08 gearing:
1)3.636
2)2.235
3)1.521
4)1.137
5)0.971
6)0.756

I've got the 07 and would be intersted if this info is correct. I remember reading on another car part forum that the second gear ratio was higher than this - might be wrong though. Right now i'm not too fussed either way as im looking for some iridium plugs. Apparently the car parts are easy to find but everywhere (like the link i just gave) says 2 weeks order time! Any tips??

2008 STi 6 speed manual
1st 3.636
2nd 2.235

4th, 1.137
5th 0.097

are you sure about the rear final drive ratio ? if yes we can use 2008 r180 directly with wrx 5mt.

Interestingly 08 SpecB tranny also lost oil pump (07 SpecB had it), but retained the dipstick.

So what's better oil pump or oil guides? Eliminating oil pump sounds like a downgrade. I found some old material when 6 speed was introduced and the oil pump was mentioned as a big deal to improve oiling over 5 speed trannies.

In my opinion, an oil pump in the tranny is over engineering. As the gears spin oil is already lubricating the gears. The 08 STi does not have an oil pump and neither does it have a dipstick. You check oil level by literally opening a bolt on the passanger side of the tranny and filling it up to the specified level.

I am not an engineer, so I cannot say. Do you have anything to back up your opinion?

Here is what I found about the oil pump:

"It has an internal oil pump for pressure lubrication. The change to pressure lubrication assures that local temperatures in the gear box are kept under control, a valid criticism of the 5-speed design under racing conditions. The 3.9 final drive unit has a separate oil galley, isolating possible gear chips and further managing internal thermal loads."

http://www.spdusa.com/6-speed_conversion.htm

Btw, the dipstick is very convenient. Not only for checking the oil level but also for filling the tranny. Getting under the car to check level is not quite convenient....

in edm cars user manual, the gear ratio seen as
3.636 2.235 1.590 1.137 0.891 0.707
3.90
3.54

maybe there is a diffrence between edm and usdm as usual.

EDM STI ratios are like USDM LGT SpecB ratios.

correct, however the USDM spec B gears will not work in the 07-08 USDM sti tranny, or probably the EDM STI tranny either for that matter.

I was wondering about that, too. How do you know?

Rallispec told me that they can convert 07+ STI tranny to SpecB ratios by using 5-6th gears from JDM STI Forester tranny.

that's correct- and those Forester gears are the ones I have awaiting installation in my '08. The problem with the Legacy spec B gears is that even though they have the same ratios, they use the older narrow keyway. Subaru changed the width of the keyway on the (input? output?) shaft between 06 and 07. Barring other differences, it might be possible to use the spec B gears on an 04-06 sti, but you definitely can't use them on an '07-08 sti.

Thanks to a poster over on IWSTI, the following site gave me the part numbers for the EDM taller 5th and 6th gears:

http://opposedforces.com/parts/

6th drive: 32363AA100
5th drive: 32341AA350
5/6th driven: 32364AA070

at least I believe these are them- I chose "europe, left hand drive" in the menu structure. There was an alternate listed for the 6th drive gear as well, but no alternates for 5th and the driven gearset. Here's the 6th alternate: 32337AA030. Note that it did not call it a supercede.

There's two versions for the 07 STI trans. Which part # is the one with the pump (the other I presume is splash lubricated)?

Since the 08 does not have a dip stick anymore there is a female 6 point (allen) bolt on the top. I'm assuming this is the fill location?

No. There is a new plug on the side. How else would you know how much oil to put? RTFM

Do 08 STi axles fit/work in other transmissions? If so, which years?

Nope. 08+ STi axle bars are longer than 07 and earlier STi bars. The outer CV ends, splined end, is also longer than previous years, so they wont work with older hubs/unit-bearings. Havent looked at the inner CV stub, but Im sure its the same as 07 and earlier.
