Default It's Alive: phase 2 ej22 with phase 1 dohc heads in 96 Impreza

So before I get flamed for putting together a motor that really does not make much sense, I will let you know it was done on a budget of $200 from random stuff I had, and the original motor was dead.
Car: 1996 Impreza
Block: 2001 phase II EJ22
Heads: 1997 Phase I EJ25 DOHC
Manifold: 1997 Phase I EJ25
ECU: 1996 Impreza EJ22
Sensors: Mix of 1996 EJ22 and 1997 EJ25
The build was actually very straight forward, the main issue was making sure that the wiring was all correct and the ecu had all the sensors that it was looking for. I ended up using most of the sensors and the tb off the 1996 ej22. In the end the combo runs great with no weird glitches and NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT

The reason that I posted it is because I could not find anyone that had done such a combination. In reality it would make a very nice boost fed motor being the phase II ej22 with dohc head combo. The compression should be great for a simple turbo, or if left as is it does feel a little better than it did originally.

Enjoy, comments and questions appreciated.

Good to see people are actually doing their own thing and not relying on what others say and think should be done!!!

How does this setup feel as a daily driver? Sluggish at all, about the same as a stock EJ22, or maybe a little more pep?

Good job!

Hello,

That's a good little engine combination you've got there. Your right, it would be a great combination to throw boost at. One of our locals ran one for years in his 2000 OBS. Used to run the equivalent of an 18g on it at 12psi all day long. Eventually he decided he wanted to find the limit and turned up the boost one night at the drag strip. It made it to about 16psi before it developed a knock. This was after about 40k mi. of daily driving and Saturday nights in the 1/4 mi.

The setup feels really nice. I would compare it to the stock ej22 with maybe a little more power. In the end I am glad I did it... Thanks for the comments.

Nice, I was wondering how that combination would work. I had my own Frankenstein engine this spring. Got a 2.5 phase I block knowing nothing about it except it had bent valves. I have a 95 impress with a 1.8 and wanted to do an engine swap. I used the 2.5 block with my 1.8 heads. Strange yes, but I could def tell a difference. Didn't have high end power but low rpm was alot better. Threw a turbo on for the high end revs, ran great until it fried the right side of the motor. Lol should have checked out the block first but it was worth the experience.

I thought about this combination awhile ago in terms of finding a way to put dual ports on the phase II EJ22s without going back to the older 2.2 head. I was looking at keeping it N/A though and using a thin 2.5 head gasket to keep the CR (actually bump it slightly) where it was at in the original 2.2 setup.

Never actually did it though.

Instead of the EJ25 gasket, call Cometic and order an EJ22 gasket in a thinner makeup. Change the last three digits to -024 or -027 as they are the thickness in .xxx"

Or that too..

1) I have no clue whether it's better to match the gasket to the bigger of the two bores or the smaller of the two bores. Although, I figure it'd be better to use an EJ22 one since (I would guess) it would have less fitment issues. Although if the EJ25 heads bolt up properly, there shouldn't be issues anyway.

2) I was looking at only Subaru parts. Very little thought or foresight was put into the idea, so that's probably why. Especially since I didn't have money to do it.

You fried it because you were running around 11:1 compression and then threw a turbo at it. You broke your car. It's not the block's fault you didn't do your homework before you built an engine.
